Unless I misunderstood, the latest developer interview seems to flat out state that Shepard dies ("has a permanent story death") at the end of ME2. See for yourself, skip to 1:30
Mass Effect 2
Game » consists of 21 releases. Released Jan 26, 2010
After a violent death by an unknown force and a timely reanimation by the human supremacist organization Cerberus, Commander Shepard must assemble a new squad in the seedier side of the galaxy for a suicide mission in the second installment of the "Mass Effect" trilogy.
Surprising revelation in latest developer interview *SPOILERS*
Hrm... strange. Everything i've heard is that he CAN die permanently... but that he doesn't HAVE to die. Basically if you play your cards right you and your team will live at the end. OR you and your team will be DEED!! erm... Dead. Kind of weird to hear this guy just flat out say "He dies."
Yeah, they've been pushing that pretty hard, but do not fear. It's been stated multiple times that one of several outcomes of this "suicide mission" is that Shepard dies during the course of it. That means that that particular Shepard would be dead, and would therefore not be able to transfer into ME3... 'cause he'd be dead, you know. I have to assume you can go back to a prior save (provided you made one), gear up some more and tackle the mission again, but otherwise... yeah, DEAD.
They've said earlier that if you play a certain way your character of shepard "could" die. It's not written in stone, but if you rush in too quick, you or members of your party may not make it all the way into mass effect 3.
" @Geno: They've already stated that there are multiple endings and that all the teammates including Sheparrd are completely expendable in this sequel. "Man...that's crazy.
Though if Shep or Tali dies during my playthrough, I'm sure as hell reloading. I currently have little interest in the new teammates though, so I'll see about them.
It has been confirmed by Casey Hudson on the ME official forums that if you die at the end of ME2, you can't load your save in ME3, and ME3 starts with a default backstory where Shepard survives.
Basically, it's only a "permanent character death" if you don't play ME3. It's barely better than a normal game over.
its starting to annoy me a bit, especially with this game. Also how some movie trailers do the same thing. Understandably it builds hype and anticipation, but I'd still like some surprises. I guess we'll see when the game comes out." I think everybody and their mother knows that. But what I kinda hate about these vids is the ammount of info they are giving away. Safe to say I won't have a 'pure experience' "
