I think we should know the context before we come to conclusions. This seems minutely offensive at worst. It's a full length dress, it's not like she's wearing a mini-skirt corset and hooker boots. Also, I don't think a leather jacket would do much to stop the projectiles in ME, probably not the best idea to get into combat in it.

Bioware showing that they are a paragon of equality

"Hey, I'm Animasta, I like my ANIME GURLS to look real trashy and titty-licious, because Japan and that makes it okay for chicks to be exposed, while guys get to wear sweet parachute pants. Anyway, Canadian women should only be allowed to wear denim vests and bootcut jeans, like the ones modeled by Bret Favre. It's equality, you guys."
what
Shepard is BioWare's character. BioWare feel as though female Shepard would wear a dress. That's kind of the end of the conversation. Did you complain that Revan wore a sick mask?
So how do they track if you played the demo? Do you need to keep it on your machine until the game is released?
@penINC said:
Well that's dumb. Why can't my male Shepard have a dress too?
Lol. This isn't Saints Rowe.

Probably through your EA account.
Anyways, it's nice to see that people are already gasping at straws to talk mess on Mass Effect 3. I can't wait for the game to come out next week so the forums will be flooded with threads full of the same people saying the same things about how the game is a disaster, Mass Effect 1 was apparently the shit, and how Bioware is literally the antichrist of video games.
Fuck this sexist bullshit. Just because my Shepard is a soldier dude means that he doesn't get the option to get all gussied up? I think it's high time men stood up for themselves. We should boycott ME3 and send Bioware a clear message that just because we're men does not mean we want to look ruggedly handsome all the time! I'm cancelling my preorder until I know for a fact that male Shepards will also have the option to appear regal and dashing when outside of N7 armor.
ugh, i can't believe you feminist cunts are getting all outraged and trying to stir up controversy over a dress. just wait until i log on to the extranet and make a rage holo about this for //SITE 6.1 MESSAGEBOARD-REDDIT-MENSRIGHTSACTIVISM//
OWNED AGAIN YOU FEMINAZI SHITBAGS!
whats wrong with you people? who cares? its an OPTIONAL outfit thats only for chilling on the ship.
its pretty pathetic to get upset over something like this...

isn't that just the kasumi dlc dress with some extra gubbins added on. way to just phone in your sexism bioware. next thing you'll tell me they skimped out and just recycled all the asari sex animations.
From the Mass Effect Wikia
@actionTACO: But how can a car be a feminist?
one time i went to a feminist rally and it was just a bonfire fueled entirely by video games and a pinata shaped vaguely like andy warhol.
true story.
Who fucking cares? This is nothing to get up in arms over. Both the dress and the jacket look dumb so it doesn't matter.
one time this dumb bitch was bitching about the portrayal of women in video games and then i stood up and said "what about zengief?!? he's musclely and only in underwear and i don't see you complaining about him! now go make me a sandwich!"
then everyone started clapping and carried me out of the room on their shoulders and then david gaider ran up to me and gave me a free copy of dragon age II for so gallantly defending video games.
idk
the male jacket. implies bad ass and machismo which goes with the male fantasy. while the dress goes with sexuality and feminism female fantasy.
its not really sexist at least from my point of view then again im not female.
Lady Shepard has some nice gams, she wants to show them off.
In ME2 I had my Lady Shepard wearing the officer's suit. The crew member's suit with the sleeves rolled up looked dopey, the scientist's suit is for scientists, and the colonist's suit wasn't appropriate. When I got the black dress I wore it for that party then put my officer's suit back on. My Lady Shepard is self-conscious about her butch shoulders. She's a tough woman but every now and then she feels a little unpretty and needs her blue lady friend to tell her she's sexy.

Dude but the scientist suit looks so good on her! that's the one I use, the crew member suit is for red shirts so that one is a no go and the officer suit does look nice on both male and lady Shepard, but yeah the party suit for lady Shep dosn't fit when walking arround the Normandy it's too formal.
so i get the leather jacket if i play the multi player demo or story demo? i was trying to stay away from the story demo, but if i must play it to get the jacket im in!

Ladies can wear dresses and ALSO be strong. Crazy I know.
It's well known that the ancient shape of a 'dress', tought to mankind by the malevolent diety Chauvenastaraja, drain the wearer of all power, cursing them with inferiority. When all the women of the world were sleeping, the sneaky men, servants of Chauvenastaraja, put them all in dresses to establish male dominance in the world.
The N7 jacket is pretty sweet my female Shepard would wear that - I don't think she would wear a dress though...
I didn't read any of these posts but I'm pretty sure all female video game heroes should look like WNBA players, stereotypey lesbians or whatever a tough woman looks and dresses like. This is how equality works.

Femshep wants to feel pretty?
This. Honestly feminists need to take a fucking break from all the hating. Whatever you say about girls putting on makeup to impress men bullshit, well a lot of guys and girls ENJOY feeling pretty. I like it too. If that's what makes people happy, then let them be. And all of a sudden people jump in and say, "OH SHES OUT OF CHARACTER YOU SEXIST". WHAT.THE.FUCK. When did Shepard have a character? I thought he/she was always only a narrative device to play out the players' choices. Now before people point out I put "he" before "she" in the last sentence, I'm out.
Because clearly the complaint here is that women are dressing pretty, you've done an excellent job understanding the argument here and then contributing a well thought out addition to it and you aren't in fact just railing against a straw feminist. Oh boy @artgarcrunkle: is pulling the exact same move only with a little extra bit about lesbians in there.
@Animasta: I'm a woman, and I don't find this very sexist. There are far more sexist things in video games than giving a female character a dress. Of course it doesn't fit the character, considering you get into fights a lot :D But extra outfits are usually just a fun addition, I think you're giving this a bit too much meaning.

It's fucking disgusting that Bioware - who supposedly is progressive - resorts to such disgusting gender stereotypes such as "women sometimes wear dresses so here's a dress if you want your female shepherd to wear one on the Normandy".
It's disgusting? Seriously, now? So women who want to wear dresses, can't now? You should tell those female tennis players to start dressing "appropriately" then. They should wear baggy shorts and polo-shirts. Apparently their attire aren't good for any type of physical activities.
Women should be able to wear anything without being judged so if you don't like the dress, don't wear it.
@kheldorin: You should read some of the comments about the female body types that were available in the Guild Wars 2 beta. Most of them have pretty ample breasts, but the typical comment is along the range of "this is disgraceful there should be normal body types!". It gets to be a little eyebrow raising, especially when all the male characters are equally as sexualised there.
I do agree that there could have been more options here though, the cocktail dress doesn't exactly suit female Shepard, and it's clearly just being reused from the 2nd game.
