    Overview

In Goemon's first appearance (and perhaps his last in the arcade), the goal of the game is to reach the end of every stage while avoiding or defeating the guards. Goemon's main weapon is his pipe, but he can also jump on enemies, and pick up and throw items that are scattered throughout the levels.

    Art style

The visual style of the game references a variety of traditional Japanese art forms, including screen paintings and the iconic woodblock-printed images known as ukiyo-e. In particular, the characters' expressive faces mimic the countless kabuki actor portraits that were printed (mainly as theater souvenirs) in the 18th and 19th centuries.
