Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
And these games are available... right now.
Apes are primates that lack tails. They swing from tree to tree and sometimes fling poo. Not to be confused with monkeys (who have tails).
An applause is the act of a crowd or group of people clapping their hands, usually in response to something awesome that happened.
Levels that progress forward by themselves at a fixed rate.
The continue is a classic gaming concept, and usually arises when the player "dies" or fails in the game. Usually some loss is tied to a continue, in a form of a "life" or something of other value.
The ultimate pressure feature. Players have to complete the task at hand, be it defeating opponents or cutting the right wire, in the allotted time.
The concept of a helpless female character in desperate need of rescuing by the protagonist, in most cases from a villain, or from a form of impending doom.
Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect.
Sometimes designers add old-school things on purpose to enhance game design. These games tend to be heavily inspired by hardware limitations of older systems. NES, Atari 2600, and early computer platforms (DOS, Commodore 64, MSX, etc...) are common sources of inspiration.
The concept of purchasing media and having it delivered over the internet. No physical representation of this content is given, and although the content resides on the user's hard drive they are typically granted a license to the product, rather than ownership of it.
Members of Foreman Spike's crew, they try to block Mario and Luigi from completing their demolition.
A brand of motorbike appearing in the Excitebike francise and as an Assist in Super Smash Bros.
False Bowsers are henchmen of the Koopa kingdom, magically disguised as their boss. In later games, there are subtle differences between them and the real Bowser.
Fighter Flies are enemies from the Mario series. They hop back and forth while flapping their wings.
In games, fire can be an obstacle, a tool, a weapon, or a solution. Just don't play with it...unless you really want to.
Cold-blooded aquatic animals that have scales and breathe through gills.
Enemies that prefer to keep a distance to the ground, and swoop down occasionally to do some damage.
Game Over originally appeared in pinball machines, and later, arcade machines. When players lose at a game, it is game over.
Goombas are common enemies in the Mario games.
A large species of primates.
A heads-up display is a graphical overlay of vital information used in most modern games.
Frozen water. Ice can be slippery and it can be fun for ice skating.
A common type of stage featured in many games. Slippery ice, avalanches, and freezing water are some of the unpleasantries to be had when visiting these cold arctic regions.
It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto a building, a platform, or a skull, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game.
The wings on its back allows it to hop or fly. They are not as common as normal Koopa Troopas, but they pose a bigger threat.
One of Bowser's most common minions. They are protected by a hard shell.
Basically you're given a flashlight and then sent to a dark place.
The single most important thing in the world, love is a powerful story telling element that can connect characters or drive a story. There are many video game characters who have fallen in love with someone or something.
Games that include (unlockable) stamps to be used on Miiverse.
