So yeah, OnLive. It's On. It's Live. It's...OnLive.

I tried it out today; played FEAR 2, DiRT 2, Shatter and Borderlands.

I'm on a 15 Mbit cable connection which is plenty for this sort of thing.

Bandwidth averages (what OnLive is actually streaming):
    Download: 200KB - 800KB/s
    Upload: 10KB - 20KB/s
Total download after 1 hour and 14 minutes: 2.5GB

Overall I'm impressed by the quality of OnLive, though I don't think it's for me as my main gaming platform. There's a bit of noticeable compression artifacting, some input lag and some jittery movement, but it's not too bad overall.  I'll try it out some more though as I have a free year left. :)

This is the future, I'm looking forward to it in a few years when the kinks have been worked out and OnLive are no longer the main company.
Do you plan on buying anything during your free year, bearing in mind you will lose it?
Also texture pop-in is a thing in Borderlands generally.

@EdIsCool: I will certainly be redeeming my free game code at some point; but I don't think I'll be spending any money just yet.

If they can get rid of that weird limited-time ownership thing, I might buy something.

Do you know if you can get a local copy of your save games? That way you could pick up a hard copy of the game for cheaps down the line and at least be able to continue.
Great video by the way, forgot to say that  before.Dirt 2 looked unenjoyable while playable, could you go into a bit more depth on that.

The control in DiRT 2 was indeed weird. With the FPS games, the controls are meant to be responsive, so the lag isn't too bad. With DiRT 2 though, the car is meant to be a little less responsive, I mean, it's a CAR - so that in addition to the input lag and possibly even more input lag from my wireless 360 controller made it pretty bad.

@BeachThunder: I like the keypad quite a bit. I like that it allows me to have my hand in a more open and comfortable position. I'm also left handed, which makes it difficult to find a good set of binds on a normal keyboard. So, in that light yeah, it's significantly better. Prior to getting the keypad I used the numpad or the arrow keys and home cluster and it simply wasn't ideal. :)

Looks like they are going to need server farms in key global positions if they want to be expanding the service and game types. Good start though. Now I have to wonder if Google is going to get interested, another "vertical" to go for...

P.S.  What small box did you have recording the net usage, and what was it running? Interested to know what u used, as I would like to roll one up without costing arm+leg.

As for the Dirt 2 part when you mentioned the framerate, I could be completely wrong, but I thought I remember the framerate being kinda rough during the menu/cutscenes outside the trailer to begin with. 20 fps sounds about right for that part.

EDIT: Nevermind, I forgot I played it on 360, not PC. My comment sounds really dumb now lol.

Interesting. I ended up buying a Logitech G13 gameboard for the same purpose. I kinda wish I had seen this one first though. At least I got it %50 off with sending in my broken logitech G15.

    No Caption Provided
I like the gameboard because I used to have one of the original G15 keyboards (the ones with 18 extra keys instead of six) until I spilled liquid in it and it died. But I loved the extra function keys (NOT bound to existing keys like this board) and the LCD screen (which it looks like you have on your logitech keyboard).

Sucks about your ALT+O situation... I'm surprised you can't rebind key functions on that thing.

I guess I prefer just my G13 because it has an analog stick. However not having any keys above the intended WASD movement keys makes switching weapons and the F keys take some thinking to find elsewhere. It DOES need more keys like yours though.

Very slick looking interface, I can't get this since I'm not in the states and my internet would be too rubbish anyway but that's a nice package they've put together.

The fact that there's artifacting is a bit of a shame though since the graphical fidelity seems to be one of the key selling points of onlive.

Nice video, though the left hand thing messed with me a bit :P. This service seems promising, but I'm not going to pay a subscription and then also pay for games at full price, just doesn't seem like a great business model.

Also, they probably couldn't keep Crysis at a playable framerate at launch time (since they were struggling with games like borderlands).

I just started my onlive account today. I am very impressed. My biggest complaints are the frame rate, and the video quality is noticeably compressed. This my be my internet connections fault and not onlive. I hooked my cheap laptop up to the tv, and I'm using the xbox 360 controller. Overall it's a really good experience. The spectator system is pretty cool. I am not gonna toss out the consoles anytime soon, but this has a lot of potential.

The input lag was indeed driving me nuts, but a lot of that got cut out in the editing. Haha. I went into the options at least five times in an attempt to find the right sensitivity setting and see if a smoothing option or something had magically appeared since the last time I looked. No dice.  It's also sad that the games aren't running at max settings, which is something they were touting before launch.

I'm certainly not going to switch over to it, but for what it is, it's pretty impressive. I mean it's streaming that shit from somewhere else and it's playable enough. But yeah, not my cup of tea. :P

I live in a rural area and the only way I can get a decent speed was to have got a limited bandwidth package, 30GB per month to be precise. I play videogames for an average of 2 hours a day, so already OnLive is unacessible to me.

no your right, it always tends to slow down around there for a few seconds when it comes back to the menu, thats on the pc version on a rig overly suited to running it.

Awesome work on the video sir!

As for OnLive I can see this being a great alternative to putting money into a machine that, down the road, you'll just have to keep putting money into. With that said it still looks like there is much progress to be made with this service. This reminds me a lot of what Mr Davis was talking about in one of the E3 podcasts about being in a very early stage of this technology(When he was referring to the 3DS and 3D tech for PS3). I can definitely see a future where a service such as OnLive is a primary means for some to play games, though I will most likely not be jumping on the band wagon for quite some time.. I like me some hardware!

Again great video Hamst3r. Thanks for the, dare I say, Quicklook of OnLive?

@Pharmacist: Don't you have to pay for a monthly subscription for OnLive on top of the games? You're paying money either way, and depending on the time you spend with OnLive you could end up paying more than you would for an actual machine.

Either way, this is obviously not for me. Bad framerate, higher latency, low resolution, lower quality image, etc and not to mention my own crappy internet connection that would make it even worse. I'll stick to my PC, TYVM.

Really, though, thanks for the video!

If it were unlimited games during subscription ZUNE style I'd be in.

Excellent work, worthy of being on the front page.

I admit it doesn't look like the train wreck I imagined, but it still looks like an enjoyable way to be playing games.  The whole selling point was that you could "Play Crysis silky smooth on highest settings!" without needing expensive hardware.  You have more than adequate bandwidth and yet the controls are lagging, the framerate is awful, the resolution is fixed (presumably below the native res of your monitor?) and it's kinda hard to tell, but the graphics do not look like they are on anything like 'highest settings' to me.

The whole pricing structure seems horrible, especially if they can't guarantee access to your own game in the future (though to be fair, Steam doesn't  strictly guarantee that either).  I really think they ought to look at how sites like Metaboli have been operating for the past couple of years, where you pay a monthly subscription for unlimited access to their library of games, then the publishers get paid based on how much time people are spending playing their games.  That Metaboli style service but with the game downloads and installs taken out of the equation would be excellent.

@SlasherMan: Yeah I don't think the monthly cost is all that much, 5$/month if I remember correctly.

The prices are something that will evolve with the newly crafted market for this kind of service. Any price would feel a little odd because no one has done something like this before and were not comfortable with how this all works. Something like a higher monthly fee (15-20$/month) for not having to "Buy" the games, and just being able to fully play all of them, would make sense as a viable option to me.

But like I was saying this isn't really for me, at least not yet in such an early stage. I'm excited to see this grow and interested at the directions other companies take things.
