The series started with the original Panzer General released for MS-DOS in 1994. In this turn-based strategy you control a German force throughout the second world war. Depending on you success in battle, different missions are presented, an early decisive victory in France might for instance lead to an invasion of Britain, while a minor victory would not lead to this scenario. The game is viewed from an isometric perspective on a hex-based map and you are able to carry over "core-units" from battle to battle. The branching campaign, the hex-based map and the "core-unit" system are recurring elements in the franchise.
Apart from the main Panzer General series there is also sub-games in the Franchise such as Allied General, where you play as the Allies. Pacific General, which takes place in the Pacific Theatre. Peoples General, which takes places in a fictional World War 3. Fantasy General, which is set in a fantasy world. Star General, has a science-fiction theme.
