Phobos is the largest of the two moons that orbit Mars. Phobos is only 5793 km (3600 miles) to the surface of Mars, which makes it the closest moon to its planet's surface than any other moon. It was discovered by Asaph Hall on August 18, 1877. Phobos is also a very fast moon, taking only 8 hours to complete its orbit.
