Poll Are pizzas pies? (558 votes)

    True 31%
    False 51%
Tralse (on the fence / others) 17%

Recently, while looking at pizza recipes, I've seen some people calling pizza as pies. The connection made between my brain synapses almost blew my mind. Of course, why couldn't I see this before? Is this something I missed as an non-native English speaker? I went on a Google expedition to find a more reliable source on the matter, but I didn't find much concrete information. Some say that the term "pie" is only the quantification of pizzas, but pizzas themselves are not pies. Others say that it depends on the type, with deep-dish definitely being pies. I started doubting myself. What is a pizza? What is a pie?

This is not a bit. I am honestly not even sure what a pie is. I used to think that they have to be covered by crust, but that's obviously not true when I think about it more. Shepherds' pies don't even include pastry! There are also open pies with bread crusts. Are those pizzas?

So, I turn to the Giant Bomb Forums for guidance, since you guys have proven themselves as arbiters of food classification. I see that the term "pizza pies" is already used on the wiki page for pizza itself. Can someone please clear this up for me?

I was born and raised in NY. It has always been a pie to me. My first time traveling with friends outside of NY not too far from Illinois I believe, I called in for a pizza.

Me: I'd like to order a pie.

    Employee: We don't have that.

Me: I'm calling a pizza shop right?

    Employee: Yes.

Me: Okay. Then I'd like a pie.

    Employee: We don't carry that.

It went on for a bit until I realized they don't call it a pie. I just had to say a large pizza. I found it odd that it was a big rectangle cut into smaller pieces. No slices. Lesson learned. I try to have a pizza everywhere I go just to see what it taste like wherever I am. My favorite is still a good ol' NY slice. Also to anyone that is planning a NY trip look up to see where the good pizza shops are. You won't be disappointed. I would even say try a few different ones.

@mattyftm: You mad GENIUS. I just remembered I have a pre-made pie crust, half a bag of pepperoni, and a can of pizza sauce at home. Just need some cheese and I know what I'm making for dinner tonight.

Also regarding lids, key lime, lemon meringue, neither of which have lids.

The definition of a pie is typically a meat or fruit substance which implements a base and top layer of pastry cooked in a tin. A pizza is usually a tomato base sauce and cheese spread across a bread like dough, which extra toppings get added to for taste. So it's not a typical definition of a pie. But some places class them as pies so... Maybe? What about a calzone? That is a folded pizza that looks like a pasty / oggy which where I am from is classed as a pie?

Pizza's can be pies, based on the style of pizza, but not all pizza is pie.

Call that floppy, greasy, pepperoni-laden crap you can get from your average local sub shop a "pie", I would not.

Chicago-style pizza is a pie. No other pizza should be classified as such. A better question is whether Chicago-style pizza should be classified as pizza or lidless meat pie.

Those also aren't technically pies. They're made with what is essentially a biscuit base, not pastry.

Technically yes. But i'll still call you an asshole if you call a pizza a pie.

It's like calling a burger a sandwich. Technically i guess it's a sandwich, but don't call it one.

True, and I think Vinny says pies for pizza, but he is east coast as fuuuuuck. This doesn't begin to touch on the is a taco a sandwich question though.........................

How is this even a question?

Pie's are a dish-shaped pastry filled with meat, or fruit if you're feeling soft, often with a lid.

Pizza's (Except for the Chicago things because they sound crazy) are large round pieces of bread with a variety of toppings.

    I don't even see the cross-over...

They're absolutely pies. I'm Italian, so I would know. I'd never call it that though. Just like how I'd never refer to a burger as a sandwich, even though it is one.

I think that's just a weird NY thing, calling pizzas "pie". Like how us Texans like to say "coke" when we mean soda in general. Yes, Pizza can be classified into the pie or fancy bread category, but it already has a great name: pizza.

Technically, yes. It's origin is as a pie, but pizza has become so much bigger then that; labels can no longer contain it. It's weird, because people still refer to it as a pie or a pizza pie, but I bet you they don't actually associate it with what their definition of a pie is. Personally, I consider pizza it's own thing, just like a burger is it's own thing but it's technically a sandwich.

I'm from the UK, and I've only ever heard pizzas called pies by Americans - no-one does that here.Pizzas have bases and toppings, pies are closed and have pastry (unless we're talking fish pie or shepard's pie, of course). To be honest, a shepard's pie probably has as little to do with a "normal" pie as a pizza pie does. Names are stupid...

Have you even seen a Chicago style pizza? Those things are pies. Though personally I much prefer New York style pizza

It's a pie. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. This fact is also why I choose pie over cake in the great "you can only eat one thing for your life cake or pie?" debate.

I never knew it was regional. I live in Baltimore and we call them pizzas, but I guess enough of New York rubbed off on me (did a lot of work there for a while) that pie sounds perfectly fine to me. Except you'd never say "a slice of pie" when asking for pizza. Like someone above mentioned, a "pie" is more a unit of measurement, just like a "slice" is.

Here's a fun (and probably misremembered) fact:

What we call Chicago style pizza, was originally known in Italy as a tomato pie. Which has always made the "CHICAGO STYLE PIZZA IS NOT PIZZA" debate really funny to me. Like, yeah no shit it's not pizza.

So I guess my answer is no? Or yes maybe? Tralse?

This thread just reminded me that I once had an "actual" pizza-pie - as in, pizza filling, encased in legitamate pastry. It was called (for whatever reason) a "Pizza POD".

Someone should make a pizza pie. That would be delicious. A pizza enclosed in pastry. Because it's in pastry you could have like tons of toppings on the pizza. Far more than you'd normally have.

Quick, someone teach me how to make pastry. I have to make this a reality.

Isnt that basically what a calzone or a hot pocket is? or are we talking about real pie crust in a pie like shape?
