This is a simple question with a big purpose behind it: how many people who own or use PlayStation 3 consoles actually put their old PlayStation 2 games into the console and play them?

Amidst rumors of the PlayStation 4 removing backward compatibility for PS3 games, there are people pitching a fit about it, and I just don't necessarily understand it. In turn, I was curious just how many Bombers out there actually use their PS3 to play physical copies of PS2 games. If you do, is it more than you play PS3 games? If not, do you buy HD Collections of PS2 games when they are released? Do you buy PS1 Classics on the PSN Store?

Meanwhile, I know that the PS3 Slims don't necessarily have backward compatibility, and I think that's interesting - how the current console doesn't have it, but people are complaining about how the next console might not.

So...let's discuss this particular thing a little further. Is backward compatibility necessary for whatever next consoles come out? If so, would a lack of backward compatibility be a complete dealbreaker for you?

I rather just download the games of the PSN. That's what I've been doing with Sly Cooper, Jack, God of War...etc...

I still have my launch PS3. I think the last time I put a PS2 game into it was 3 years ago.

I have an old Fat PS3 that can play PS2 games and PS1 games.

No, therefore I couldn't care less if the PS4 has backwards compatibility. Unless my ps3 dies when its within 10 feet of a ps4, I can just play them on there

I would have if right before I bought my PS3 the neutered models weren't announced (killing that market and boxing me into buying a fat without BC among other features). Would I? Probably not. I still have my PS2 and it is somehow working. I have plenty of games that I never finished or even played, and there are even more that I want to repurchase or buy outright.

I tend to play more PS1 games at times, and I should have probably bought some of the Final Fantasy games over again so I could take them with me on my PSPgo or the Vita, but I don't see myself playing those enough to justify buying them again. Re-releases with trophies, as shallow as it sounds, might actually get me to buy in (read: I'm buying Final Fantasy X when it comes out on Vita). It is a nice feature, and perhaps more meaningful in the age of online play, meta-gaming, and the overabundance of redundant electronic crap that we all cling to, but it isn't a reason to not buy the next system.

I play my PS3 on an HDTV; any PS2 game would look ugly on it. 
 
There's and older TV in the living room that I use for all my PS2/GC/PS1/etc. games.

When my 60 gig was still alive I did, though it got less frequent as time went on. Now that I can't (had to replace it with a slim), I totally want to, because it was easier than trying to get my PS2 hooked up to my monitor. I'm not so bummed about PS4 not having backwards compatibility because A) they will most likely be completely up front with it and B) if they are changing the internals of the machine to make it better to make games on, I will take that over backwards compatibility hands down.

Definitely not. I just see it as a nice bonus if included. I still have my PS2 set up, so it's not really a problem. Only reason I ever wish it were still around is when I'm feeling too lazy to turn on the ol' PS2.

no, i don't since mine isn't backward compatible.

i don't have a working ps2 so i can't play ps2 games either. i do buy the HD collection because like i said i don't have a working ps2.

No I just bought a cheap PS2.

I do tend to. The upscaling is nice, and the wireless controllers, and the elimination of memory card management.

The ones that work fine I do, but the ones that have issues I still use my PS2 for. Memory Card space is scarce these days.

I never have, actually. I've got an SDTV with a PS2 hooked up to it for when I feel that itch (which is rarely, anyway.) OH! I should probably play Dark Alliance 2 at some point.

I use my PS2 to play my PS2 games, even though the wired controller is a nuisance sometimes.

Yup, recently replayed Suikoden V on it.

I bought a PS2 to play all my PS2 games. Playing them on their original system eliminates any strange emulation glitches and it only cost my $100 when I picked it up. Not too bad for a system with quite possibly the best library of any game system out there.

Nope. Only because my PS3 has never had that feature. I boot up my PS2 every once in a while though.

I think they are going to drastically change the architecture of their next console so that it is easier to develop for thus making backwards compatibility a problem I'm sure.

I would if I could. I want to keep good old games, but get rid of as much clutter as possible: namely, old consoles. Either that, or give me digital downloads.

Not in a few years to be honest, MGS 2 + 3, Persona 4, KH: Chain of Memories and God of War 1 (pre-HD release) come to mind. So not in 2 years at the least and not since my YLOD and paying for a replacement system.

I most definitally do, as I was one of the few that missed the PS2 during it's hay-day. Ever since I snagged my backwards compatible PS3 I've slowly been building up a PS2 collection, particularly of old hard-to-find games.

As for it's use, my PS2 and PS3 playing is roughly even. It does help that the PS2 had a crapton of giant RPGs on it.

Not ever since I moved to a 70" television, no. The games look horrible and nearly impossible to play if you have any dignity left in your PS3!

I would if i could i have a slim and a non bc fat so i have to keep my ps2 hooked up for games that dont get a collection like persona and a dbz budokai 3

I wish my PS3 played PS2 games. Would love to play through Persona 4 and Budokai 3 without having to pull out my PS2 and deal with memory cards :(

I use too when I had the MGS 4 bundle but had to buy a slim when it broke. I still have my PS2 but does anybody know how to make it look better? I have to use component and certain games were not meant to be shown on an HD TV. I'm glad that PS1/PS2 games are available on PSN. But I like to be able to my copy of REZ or the Shin Megami Tensi games.

I do, most recently Digital Devil Saga 1&2 and Persona 4. But videogame journalists say we don't need backwards compatibility so obviously I'm crazy.

Very rarely, played P4 on my ps3, but had very negative experiences with a lot of other games so don't really bother.

I usually sell my old console after getting the next gen one. If I wanted to play old PS3 games I'd keep the console and play with it later. Also if there would be backwards compatibility it would bring up the console's price and people would bitch about that too.

Occasionally, but the PS4 not being backwards compatible wouldn't really be a dealbreaker for me.

The PS3 and 360 can barely play old games anyway.

On the subject of backwards compstability I think it's far more pertinent to see whether the next gen can play this generations digital titles. If not I think that psn and XBLA will really get hit hard from the lash back.

Well until my launch console got the yellow light I always played PS2/PS1 games on it. I am one of those people who loves to go back and replay some of their favorite games from past generations every year or so. I also never would have experienced the persona series if my PS3 didn't have backwards compatibility, which would have been a shame because it has now become my favorite rpg series.

Although I would prefer the consoles to maintain their backwards compatibility, as long as they continue to put out the classic games as HD re-releases I am okay to just go ahead and buy those. The collections also have given me a chance to play games I never had the chance to on their original console, such as the sly cooper series and god of war, which after playing the collection I can't wait for Sly 4.

I've played a few on mine (I have the 80gig BC model). The last PS2 game I put in I think was San Andreas a while back.

I voted no, because I can't....didn't think about voting on if I would or not. There are some PS2 games I would probably throw in there sometimes if I could, but honestly, I most likely wouldn't do it enough to really matter.

I wish. My PS3 doesn't include that feature, which is irritating because I can't justify buying a PS2 just so I can play the original Killzone.
