    PlayStation Home

Game » consists of 1 releases. Released Dec 11, 2008

PlayStation Home was a social games network where PSN users could play games and socialize. Home saw a refocus in Fall 2011 in North America and Europe that put more emphasis on games than social spaces.

Can we now acknowledge that PS Home isnt a failure?

That 70 minutes is the load times for the first time you go there, then how long it takes to figure out how to quit.

" Home is just a waste of time. People can use it all they want, and the numbers can say people are on it but there is no denying that Home is just a 3D chat room with customizable avatars.   I liken it to Gaia Online, but 3D. Avatars, Games, Theaters, etc. AKA a waste of time. "
If something is not work or work related then it is a waste of time. Movies, TV, Games, Sports; they are no different than Home. Some people like them and some people don't. To hate on something because it's not for you is short sighted and close minded. "
If your really into movies, games or music I would not say they are a waste of time. Movies is one of my biggest passions, I watch them, I talk about, I write about them and I have even worked on a few shortfilms for fun. If it makes you happy then it's not a waste of time! Also people is always going to hate on something and of course they are going to hate on something that's not for them. I mean what else should they hate?   Also hate is a strong word, I would say dislike or indifferent is more appropriate in this situation.  "
I think you missed the point of my comment. Movies for you are clearly an enjoyable experience that you spend lots of time with. Well, meeting and chatting with hundreds of different people is probably an equally enjoyable experience for someone else. It's fine to dislike or be indifferent to something but to always react negatively towards it and the people who enjoy it is something different.

    @jakob187:

"Like taking away the ability to run a separate OS and generally shutting their box down while Microsoft supports open-source Kinect hacks, decided to finally allow thumb drives, and generally drop the security from their box one by one?

Oh, wait...Sony has free online.  I'm sure that so many of the publishers and developers love having to run their own servers, programming a totally separate code for individual buddy lists and everything.

    T_T

Sony does very little that is user-friendly or customer-friendly.  Microsoft has actually been moving in the RIGHT direction lately.  If anything, Sony feels like it's flailing its arms in the air like a little kid crying because Nintendo and Microsoft are just that much more popular.
       "

Dude, no one gives a crap about running seperate OS and considering how much they added in at launch, cutting a few things out to bring the price down (which they NEEDED to do) was the right thing to do. Also, many devs seem to perfer SONYs model  of online and even Valve has said they like how open PS3 is and how sony does PSN.

Again, is this freakin 2008? how can anyone say that SONY is flailing these days? And I dont think MS is that much more popular then SONY overal. In america, I guess, but WW its about even.

So yea, I dont agree with you.

    @Doctorchimp:

Whatever dude, you argument was idiotic to begin with. Seriously, Backwards Compatibility isnt as big of a deal as people make it out to be, I HAVE PS Plus, and I think its good, so whatever.  You can not like PS3 if you want, but for people to say that its flaling or that its still not doing well is just idiotic and dillusional. I care about games and what I get with the syestem, and so far ive been getting alot of good stuff in those departments over the years.

I saw how much it wanted to install on my hard drive, and then never touched it. I don't care if everyone tries it out. I still have no reason to. I consider it a failure. It is free and I haven't used it. I even used ESPN3 on my Xbox and I just watched some Soccer (Football) game on it with an announcer I didn't understand. But I used it.

@Raven_Sword:  What in your mind makes Home any good though? We've seen the stats, and whether or not they are worth anything is up for debate, but what is it that you like about Home that makes it a success? It seems the general agreement here is that it's boring and pointless. If you like it, great, but why? As far as I can tell the only reason it exists is to sell virtual goods.

Like is a strong word. I've had fun with parts of home. Some of the games like Buzz's quiz are fun. It's totally marketing, but it's kinda clever and interesting to see the little worlds and mini-games companies create. Everything exists to sell virtual goods nowadays. I think home does so in a relatively interesting and entertaining way.

Average of 70 minutes sounds pretty pathetic.

Especially since a few months ago, WoW players totaled 6 million years in total which works to more than 4000+ hours/player.

@Kierkegaard:  Yeah, but for the OP to say it's a success is also strong. It doesn't do anything meaningful for the user. If it makes money, fine, but I'm not getting why I should care.

You shouldn't care about if it makes money. Check out the areas and the little games and see if you like 'em. Then judge. Simple.

I wouldn't consider Home a failure. Not completely anyways. It's definitely not something I'd want to use ever again, though. I used it once, and I ended up bugging a bunch of random people. I think I may have trolled. I was a bad person.

So, since Home started, only 17 million unique users have logged unto it?

And among those people, they only average out 70 minutes? Since the thing started? No sir, I would not consider that a success.

This though is poor math. The total amount of time is from anyone who has ever played WoW, and then they divide that number by current players.

4000 hours is 6 hours a day, every day, for two years. I doubt that is the average amount of time people spend on WoW.

Even if you think it's poor math, the fact is that an average of 70 minutes is jack crap compared to games heavily focused on playing with other people.  I'll put money down right now that Black Ops has a higher average than that, and it's only been out a few months, compared to PS Home.

Also, 4000 hours probably isn't that far off.  You divided it into two years.  The game's been out for over six.  I have over 3000 hours logged on one toon alone.  I've been playing on and off since release, taking extended breaks at least once a year.

    Edit:

From an article posted on December 30th.

This is the reason why we haven't cured cancer yet -- we're spending 600 million collective hours playingCall of Duty: Black Ops. Over 20 million players have amassed the ludicrous figure in a mere 45 days following the game's launch.

Averaging out the number gives each player roughly 87 minutes of playtime per day from release until December 24. Evil publisher Activision is keen to point out that this far exceeds the average amount of time Facebook users spend networking their socialisms.

Gamasutra compares Black Ops' figures to Halo: Reach, which logged 50 million hours of play in its first week. If those numbers remained consistent for 45 days, Reach would have logged 326 million hours compared to Black Ops' 600 million.

Activision has not released the full number of online players, but has stated that the number of registered users outnumber those who tuned into ABC to watch the Lost season finale.

In short: This is f*cking insane.
