Rumors. I'll believe and ignore it once I hear it at E3.
PlayStation Network (PS3)
Platform »
The PlayStation Network is the online service by Sony Computer Entertainment, providing downloads of games, trailers, themes and much more. The service is free, but also offers a paid version for various benefits.
PSN+ Sounds Like A Good Deal
I still get free online play[Thought I never use it] and demos, so I'm good.
I'd be very curious to see the distinction of access to the full psn games if it's the ability to own the game or just play it as long as you're a paying member. Also, the quality of the game would be a concern if the typical selection is Flow, Elefunk, Pain and Bowling; that would be underwhelming. 120 dollars is a lot of money and while Xbox subscriptions are technically 50 bucks a year, 12 month cards can easily be got for 30 to 40 dollars, sometimes less.
Totally not worth it. Especially when you factor in that you can pretty much get 12 months of live for $30-$40 whenever you'd like as long as you're willing to look.
My problem with this is that it will split the users for XGC. If half of my friends list pays for the service, then my potential uses for it are cut in half.
I barely have 5 games for my PS3 (as opposed to 80+ for my 360), and I do all my Multiplayer gaming on the Xbox .... so PSN is just there, since its free.
Not paying a single penny, thank you very much.
Brad, I don't think 10 bucks per month plus tax - depending which state you live - counts as a good deal. Furthermore, paying for online services and still 60 dollar games plus monthly fees for internet access isn't cheap. That's why I migrated to PS3 because online fee was non existent!! I hope they won't ever charge us fees to play online..
yeah I'd need to see a lot more for 9.99 a month. and dont even bother mentioning anything about ps home that stuff is pointless
A paid PSN service should not affect online (or multiplayer) services, but offer offline (or single-player) benefits.
Stuff like "cloud" based saving, a rotation of free games, and extended demos I have no problem with, but when you create a gap in online interactivity by only offering paying users things like cross-game chat (and possibly DLC), you're getting dangerously close to the 360's gold / silver model.
At a higher price point than Xbox Live, it won't fly with me.
" [..] paying for cross game voice chat makes me lol, though "I think this is a bad idea as well but your comment is full of irony.
As long as I can still play online for free, I don't give a shit about PSN+.
And if they do make the catastrophic mistake of charging to play online, well, it's singleplayer games from now on for my PS3.
I hope they have a better fee than a $9.99 a month (Year = $120 if you were doing the month). Other then that I glad their keeping most things free like online.
That seems like its asking alot of money, hoping its either wrong or really worth it. But if not? at least I can still play games online, 360 should take note.
And I feel you on the updating thing, I turned on my 360 for Mass Effect 2 for the first time in months and was well over an hour of updating, downloading, installing and inputting codes before I got to play. I do miss the days of just slapping in a cartridge and just playing.
There's some cool stuff in there but 10 bucks a month seems pretty steep compared to XBL. The first hour demo is interesting. I would hope they really bump their retail game list up though. I'll leave it up to the official announcement to make a real judgement though. Right now I'm interested.
Not that I have a PS3, but I'll wait and see before I pass judgement. I will say that, given the relative similarity between the 360 and the PS3, anything they do is going to rightfully be compared to the other service. It may not be wise to double the asking price (and then some), no matter what's offered.
Party chat, let alone person to person cross game chat is what I want the most. With a silver Xbox live account you are restricted to private chat. Only gold allows for eight person party chat. Also, as much as I don't mind the cross media bar (XMB), if they expect me to pay for a premium PSN service I except them to redesign that thing.
As long as they don't remove features or content from me they can do whatever they want with their paid service. This exclusive DLC business sounds questionable in that regard. But it all depends. On this rumor being true, for one.
It is cool that they are not stripping current PSN features because obviously that would be the wrong way to go. I heard about the free PSN games before, but I am skeptical of this. Qore has occasionally done this but it is for PSN games that came out years before that have already been discounted to be pretty cheap already, so if it is just that its not much of a deal. Exclusive DLC needs to be something significant. Auto-patching for recently played titles could be cool, wonder if it works while on standyby. I assume the Playstation Protection Plan doesn't apply to systems as old as mine. The 'first hour' demo for PSN titles sounds kind of lame, seems to be trying to make up for the fact that most PSN games don't automatically have demos and the ones that do don't have a simple XBLA style 'Upgrade to Full Game' option. I'm not sure if that should be a subscriber perk since it is basically a marketing tool for the game.
The $9.99/month price tag is too high for my tastes but I might be interested if it were $50/year. There are certainly more useful features there than on XBL and Sony would still have the advantage of not forcing people to pay it just to play their games online.
Eh, kidna pricey if true. Honestly, if they dont improve the stability and connection of online games by alot then whats the point?
