Games beaten in 2018

This is a simple list to keep track of all the games I've played this year and to give my short thoughts on them all. Spoilers will be unmarked

List items

  • Finished 1/19

Finally played this classic and it absolutely holds up and met my high expectations after hearing how great the game was.

  • Finished 3/4

Played the remake this game is still fucking amazing.

  • Finished ?

Story is done but I can see myself grinding out weapons and armor for hundreds of more hours especially when new dlc is out.

  • Finished 3/14

This game is the definition of average nothing really stood out to me. Also the final bosses Fergus/Deathshead were insanely easy and boring.

  • Finished 3/19

Fantastic game one of my favorite of all time, the characters and story are ridiculous and fun. I also love when developers play with little things in console like how you have phone conversations using the wiimote as a phone it's just a genius idea. Sylvia best girl

  • Finished 3/23

Suda 51 returns with another extremely stylish game with one of the weirdest premises for a story I've ever played. It begins with yourself as some kind of assassin or killer for hire killing monsters which later you learn were made into monsters because they were corrupted by dark moon powers? It twists and turns into a battle against a man named David whose goal is to conquer the world by actually literally physically stealing the earth moon and sun. The game ends with you learning you are related and fighting on THE MOON for control of the moon itself. Along the way you fight other wild bosses such as Alice in wonderland, a yakuza whose back tattoo comes to life like some kind of stand from jojo, and fucking evil thomas the tank engine it's a wild ride.

  • Finished 3/25

First off incredible soundtrack and black and white visuals are super well done. Gameplay wise the bosses were very fun and the idea of raking up points with unique kills sounds fun but got really repetitive when you realize there isn't enough variety in kills to make the levels fun. Story is alright at best not as crazy and branching as many Suda games but a city wide deathmatch is still a cool idea. Black Baron is the coolest

Had to come back and edit this real quick Greg Proops being the announcer for a really strange and violent japanese game is super surreal

  • Finished 4/4

Beginning of the downfall of Paper Mario removal of most rpg elements dumbed down story and lackluster characters ruin this game. This game is also filled with filler bs just made to increase the length of the game lots of backtracking. Ch.6/7 were an absolute joke and a chore especially the end of ch.6 where you just walk for a min and a half to do a boss fight (which you have to do over again in dimentio's insanely dull tag game through unmemorable level locations).

  • Finished 5/5

Absolutely great game the main cast in this game is very strong and you feel very close to all of them as the game progresses (fuck teddie) especially the family unit of you nanako and dojima. A lot of the side s-links felt weaker in this game compared to 3 however. Changes to how dungeons work made them a lot easier which can be good and bad but my favorite change is an easy way to refill sp allowing you to finish a dungeon in 1 day. Also the most needed feature of p3 got added being full control of party members. Overall enjoyable experience.

  • Finished 5/10

Very fun co-op only a couple hours long but I honestly couldn't see it going for much longer. The story had a lot of shortcomings such as really awkward dialogue and some odd interactions which I can only chalk up too the writer not doing enough research seeing as he's not from the U.S; this doesn't distract much from the story besides it making some moments a lot more comedic rather than the serious tone it was trying to go for. However what is strong is the changing uses of splitscreen many different techniques are shown throughout the game some of which I hadn't seen before such as the switching off characters during the hospital sequence I thought all of that was really cool and hopefully some of this is used in their next game if they continue on this route. Finally the ending being a dramatic shift in the way the game is played is very fun a doesn't make it feel too competitive rather brings a satisfying end to the story, however I do wish there was some sort of secret/hidden ending that if enough checkpoints were reached allowed for a cooperative end.

  • Finished 5/18

I cried during the entire finale which is like 30 min long 10/10

  • Finished 5/21

    3/4 replay still love it

  • Finished 6/6

Great storytelling and core cast Brok/Sindri/Mimir. Loved seeing the growth of Kratos and Atreus relationship and seeing their journey play out. Combat was not enjoyable and in the end became too easy did not need rpg scaling gear in a god of war game and also wish the bosses were more interesting/varied I mean you fight the same boss 3 times. Felt like Freya was a good character until the end and she became a stereotypical character and lost some of her uniqueness.

  • Finished 6/12

Mostly a review of the final dlc Ringed City as it was my first time although I played the whole game again. The whole aesthetic of the area is really cool and finally brings a finish to these games and for the most part the bosses are really cool and fun to fight excluding halflight.

  • Finished 6/13

Super cool fast-paced action game with gameplay similar to something like Hotline Miami except a little slower and with cool abilities to give you some option with how you approach combat. Cyberpunk style is always a plus for me and the game does it well especially with character and enemy designs.

  • Finished 6/18

Not a huge fan of Metroidvanias but the gameplay in this hooked me fast along with the charming cast of characters. Not being super long and the map being easy to navigate is not something common in these types of games for me so it was a welcome change. 1 thing I noticed at the end though is I didn't find much use for most of the weapons and ended up just using the machine gun/rocket launcher for pretty much everything.

  • Finished 6/26

A return to form for the Mario tennis series. The gameplay is deep and complex and an absolute blast to play with friends. The story mode is extremely challenging and can be annoying at times but overall teaches you the gameplay well and gets you ready for the real meat of the game.

  • Finished 7/1

Way too long and repetitive but still had a fun time co-op and there was a lot of neat ideas here and there throughout the game.

  • Finished all of July

Replayed this game 3 times this month and loved the hell out of it every time this game is a masterpiece

  • Finished 8/12

First resident evil game I completed and I really enjoyed it. scared the hell out of me multiple times and looking forward to trying it in vr sometime.

  • Finished 8/20

I've got a lot of mixed feelings on this game but for now I'll leave it as it's an ok game.

  • Finished 9/24

cute writing and fun katamari like hole sucking action only wish it was longer

  • Finished 10/6

Best persona game yet loved all the confidants and the gameplay changes are fantastic demon negotiation being my number one fav and actual demons in combat not copy pasted enemies. dungeons visual were the best for the series but not as complex as shin megami games. the style and music was 10/10 incredible and an absolute joy honestly very sad to be done with the game as I connected a lot to the main cast and loved my adventures with all of them and the message of the last dungeon really stuck with me.

  • ? 10/15

    Lots of dabbing

  • Finished 10/18

Had a lot more fun with this than I would have thought, also very nice to play for free through game pass which I will probably check out again. Played all the way through the Laracer story line which was interesting and well executed "finale" for the story and cool how many games they included from other franchises. only thing i wanted was a much better soundtrack a lot of the songs that are there are censored and there's not enough stations/songs per station.

  • Finished 10/25

Preface I wish I read the manga before playing this as I would have probably gotten a lot more out of it but oh well. Game was pretty fun in a lot of places and you could very easily feel the Yakuza influence but it loses a lot of the charm quickly as the substories are not as strong mostly because a lot of the characters are weak and the city you spend all your time in is pretty dull.

  • Finished 11/1

    Sure

  • Finished 11/11

Plays a lot like most open world rpgs of this type. The things hurting this game the most is how janky and broken many things are and also it's very unoptimized. The prime example of being broken is an npc I murdered being revived 2 separate times for side quests and still not being able to interact with him. Story is predictable and nothing exemplary stands out from it same with side quests most are forgettable. The best thing to come out of this game is it has good directional combat which isnt perfect but better than other games that have gone for a similar style. last thought I found it really disappointing that unlike other rpgs even when you get to a high level and have great armor and weapon you never really feel that powerful especially compared to some armored enemies near the end idk if this is by design but it's frustrating.

  • Finished 11/14

Had to finally go and finish this game before I get into the new one. Really wish this game was on pc because it really shows it's age playing on ps3 and a port would really alleviate a lot of the issues I had. Otherwise a great story and latest title card pull

  • Finished 11/17

Cool combo of beat em up and rpg that went on for a tad too long. Incredible art though

  • Finished 11/18

A lot more of the last game and that's exactly what I wanted. still got a lot more I want to do here.

  • Finished 11/27

Tight challenging platformer with a cute story that hits close to home

  • Finished 12/7

Neat little game with a relatable story that's uplifting. I thought it was great how the puzzles really felt like the emotion that the story was going through. very short however and lacking any real substance

  • Finished 12/10

World of light is long as fuck goddamn. All the new characters are great additions and I'm looking forward to playing more.

  • Finished 12/12

Played Eevee version. Adds a ton of new additions to the normal pokemon mechanics. Loved seeing pokemon in the wild instead of random chance. Also first time I completed the pokedex ever.

  • Finished 12/30

Very reminiscent of Limbo/Inside style of platforming with Swerys weird additives that I love. Initially a game that I thought was about dying but I was wrong. The story becomes about dealing with pain and accepting yourself and delivers this message with a powerful ending.
