" @Babble: Right, but ANY new user coming into that game may not have known about the Halloween event, so what the fuck is the point of the MxO community going off about it like everyone on the planet is supposed to know?  Oh, sorry...they should've "done some research".  I doubt that your average, run-of-the-mill "ZOMG I LOVE TEH MATRIX" film fan would bother doing research.  Therefore, Ryan and Vinny came into that the same that many others would...and I'll ASSUME many others DID:  ignorant to what the fuck is going on, and in turn laughing it up about it.  Does that mean Ryan and Vinny don't have any appreciation for what Sega, WB, and Monolith put together?  Last I checked, they loved all of Monolith's OTHER games.  They are documenting the fall of an MMO that...by most gamer and MMO player terms...should've died a long time ago and saved itself the embarrassment of continuing onward.

I'll ASSUME that the MxO community is a lot like those who LOVE the films:  they think they are ridiculously intelligent above most others because they "researched" the Alice in Wonderland, Buddhist, and millions of other references in the movies.  Since they know all this shit, it makes them feel empowered and better than most others.

Meanwhile, here at Giant Bomb...we know we're not better than everyone else.  We're mostly a bunch of regular doods that chill, play video games, rant and rave about shit on our blogs and forum posts because we have keyboards and opinions, and at the end of the day, we go to sleep without unjacking a fake cord from the back of our necks.  =  /

*EDIT*
P.S.  -- I'm waiting for someone to either come in and correct my use of the word "cord"...because then you'll know that person spends far too much time thinking about The Matrix.  =  P
"
I'm sure the darkness wasn't there when the game launched, so those average run of the mill fans of teh matrix probably didn't have this kind of experience at all... And what does this matter right now anyway? Remember this little detail? The game is getting shut down, permanently. That is why this video is done at all, and allegedly that is why the darkness is there outside Halloween. It's not to review the game or to attract new fans. Details? Also, isn't there a public chat channel for a new user to go all "guys, what's with the darkness, are my graphics bugged or what?" or something? But anyway, this thread is stuck to the darkness thing way more than their thread is, for whatever reason. As for GB members not thinking they're better, eh, this thread is about making fun of others, and now talking about how these others think they're so much better.

As for the game apparently sucking and thus being shut down, as some users here claim, I wonder if these same users believe Wii is the best thing since sliced bread, since sales and success are so important to quality. Or if they'd think the same for World of Warcraft even, given all the insults thrown around for "mmo fanboys" . Gotta love double standard arguments. It lasted four years, that sounds pretty good to me. Sure, it's no Blizzard success story but whatever, it isn't the worst either. Will Conan and Warhammer last 4? Dungeons & Dragons Online is changing its commercial model in hopes of doing better after 3 years. Other MMOs have fallen or have attempted to succeed through free to play models too.

It says I can set language preference... Won't many people leave it to English anyway? Couldn't they let me restrict by region, as opposed to a particular country? I just want almost any European countries, not French or Italian or whatever in particular :S

I can't even set it to European English, it only has 1 English setting and I imagine that includes both the UK and the US?

What a weird system :S

You can build a small band of warriors and go around doing quests, and as you grow in power take on more involving tasks. From a lowly bandit hunter you can go up to being a nation's marshall, ordering the other lords around as you see fit, having cities and castles under your command, or whatever. In times of peace, you can always disband or leave your army inside cities and go back to doing smaller tasks that don't require such power, and the cost it comes with. I suppose you can make money on the side with trading but, uh, I don't think anyone would choose that, and you're bound to be attacked by bandits and once again resort to combat.

So, yeah, combat and a small amount of strategy is most all of it, but with the depth and complexity involved, that kind of description doesn't do the game justice. Character progression is vast, but not just in statistical numbers, as with your increase in power you also grow to be naturally more able to take on certain challenges you didn't imagine or consider previously, the dynamics change vastly from the first days to later weeks.

My personal favorite activity would be to restore a nation's claimaint to the throne, which involves taking over all that nation's cities and castles one by one, persuading some of its lords to join you in the cause, depending on their personality and what you are in position to promise to them, using the resources provided by the settlements to your advantage, be it money from taxes or troops from villages (the more they like you the more/better troops you can draw from them), and managing your relations with your allies and enemies in a way that you'll have your personal benefits and gain once the war is over also... And that description's still not really going in-depth. The way your relations formed from past deeds can affect your progress in a completely different situation that may come along later on is pretty damn cool. It pays to think ahead.

Of course, this type of situation is only possible after a long journey, you can't expect to go in with your character and a few companions and be able to achieve all this, you'll first need to learn what works and what doesn't, how to increase and manage your army well, etc. But it all comes naturally with experience. First you'll be going around killing bandits, doing tournaments, upgrading your gear, or doing whatever seems fun, slowly realising your new potential as you increase in ability and take on tasks you hastily avoided previously, yet you already did feel your accomplishments and the joy of progression, even though you're nothing compare to what you will be, eventually. Great game, really.

I'm not sure what you expect from a game with this name and premise.

I didn't watch the whole thing, does it have anything more involving than simply switched animation sets (buh)?

I told you to only try it after native gets boring so you'd be experienced and eager for a challenge by that point :P

Exhaust native first, it throws new stuff at you every so often as you play, and is worth experiencing. After that you can try mods. Trying mods first will just make native seem bland because it doesn't have this or that thing the mod had, or whatever. You'll appreciate the mods more if you actually notice the changes they do after all. It doesn't sound like you've played enough of native so far. The game may not last as long that way.

Sword of Damocles will be good as well. Sure, the invasion may put you off a little but it happens after a full year of game time so you'll welcome the change by that point. The other features the mod has are worth experiencing, imo. You can separate your party and have them follow you (like you often see AI units moving around together), or command them to do stuff like lords can do (patrol an area or whatever) for example.

So, Ryan has common sense confirmed! Really, who would be surprised? It's practically what it was made for. To have fun with people who don't play the game and annoy those who do... If any.

I said I googled for information. Wow? I didn't experience the zombie infestation and call it an exploit, which would be analogous to this. I simply mistook which of the diseases you're talking about, since I only knew of one. Also, I didn't call anyone out for not using google after the first instance (which really wasn't reffering to google in particular, ,just that, if you've heard of the game, then you're bound to have seen screens of it without the darkness, and uh, everyone has I guess, since at one time it was pretty hyped). After that, I was just explaining where I got the info in casual conversation so people wouldn't once again call me a fanboy of a game I have never experienced... Yeah, total trolling, lol.

"Bingo.  You wanna talk about Google searching, Alexander?

That was another call out..."
I didn't have to google search it, it was all over news outlets, and is somewhat memorable... Well, I'm so sorry I wasn't aware of the situation you mentioned. I totally apologise. I was so harsh, calling it an exploit. I was out of line. I'm sorry. I'll never do it again. I'll make sure to actually google search and make my comment to your future WoW descriptions more relevant. I hope that will be to your satisfaction. Uh. Yeah. Done.

Also, Keyser, are you feeling alright? :S
