" I hope there will be a quantum leap, but for some reason I don't think there will be. "
It already is a big leap just from what we know already. It's not a COD game anymore, the single player at least is completely overhauled, ditching the 100% scripted style, adding actual enemy AI and allowing you to choose how to best tackle a given mission, without ommiting the spectacular set pieces they're known for. Then there are drivable vehicles, udnerwater sections, a dedicated co-op mode...
Topic. On the PC version. I search for quick match and always get very slow connection indicators, like 1-2 red lines instead of 4 or whatever green. Does it look at your country and try to set up matches close or it doesn't even take that in account? Cos I had to make a GFWL account lieing about the country since GFWL is so God damn stupid it only supports 26 or something countries, despite the games being sold in many more, since if you're not in those they don't allow you to login and play online! God damn Microsoft, what's wrong with you?!
Full Spectrum Warrior was pretty succesful recently-ish. I'm sure if a company wanted to satisfy that niche with a good effort, they'd do well enough. It's always about large scale lately, going back to a mere squad-based RTS type of game isn't desirable. Silent Storm also did well, though that's not exactly the same type being action-point based. Then again, that's another style that's lost its momentum. No more X-Com and the like. Still, genres die regardless of system, trends and habits change, that's all. Maybe they'll return someday, like the point & click genre did. You could say some of it is mixed in other genres... Ie, Close Combat has gone all FPS with Armed Assault 2, Operation Flashpoint 2 etc...
