So you guys link THREE different Kotaku articles, but nothing from 1up's week about Gender and Sexuality in video games?

I see how it is Giant Bomb. :(

So can I make a video series about tropes and how men are portrayed in video games? I figure we're just as misrepresented as women.

The problem with this is that it doesn't work in a patriarchal society. Yes men and women are portrayed terribly in video games but women have little to no pull on this, while men control a majority of the creation process and in cases like say Tomb Raider, will actively discourage women from wanting to purchase and play their video game. As an example, think of how many men you recognize in the video game industry. Then think of how many women you recognize. GiantBomb's E3 roundtables and to an extent GB itself illustrate this point beautifully as really the only notable woman is Leigh Alexander. The majority of their guests are male.

I'll get a lot of flak for this but seriously.... fuck that bitch.

She's so unknowingly strung out on proving woman are better than men she doesn't even know it anymore. She uses "sexism" and "equality" but she doesn't even know what that means anymore.

*sighs*

Way to completely miss the point AND perform exact prior harassment.

@Brodehouse: I was going to write something up about how TV Tropes is shit especially after the first pedophilia wave (it is), how Jerry Holkins is shit after Dickwolves (he is), but then I looked through your GiantBomb uploaded images and saw you posing around female video game characters, especially one from an MMO that you obviously created yourself, and found myself with no reason to.

You are absolutely part of the problem.

GAMERS DON'T UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF FEMINISM. NEWS AT THE TOP OF THE HOUR, EVERY HOUR, 'TIL THE END OF TIME.

Yes great there are men who are objectified by women. Hooray this is neither the topic at hand and also completely dismissing the issue of women being objectified. 9 times out of 10 you will see a woman in advertising because guess what? Men make more money on average than women. This means that they are the dominant consumer audience. Which means that the majority of advertising is going to cater towards those white, straight middle to upper class men.

This is how a problem begins. The answer to fixing it is not to ignore or dismiss it, but figure out from here, where you can find solutions. "Booth babes" ARE a problem for the gaming community, and not just women. This very article even admits that they were put off of Nintendo's booth because for the second year in a row, they decided that tethering consoles to women was a good idea. There are so many wrong things at play with a phrase like, "Our consoles are tethered to women so that you male gamers can enjoy." There are ways around booth babes, obviously. Good Old Games did VERY WELL WITH THIS last year at PAX: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLgkW91l6fg

Regardless, I expect a lot of people to flame feminism and feminists like they always do so go right ahead. :)

@l3illyl3ob: From what I'm guessing you'll probably have to repeatedly tap the A/B/X/Y button to have your mech rip the mouth off of a Cat-G Akrid, play a Horde Mode style game with baby Akrids, and have a pretty lackluster PVP multiplayer mode.

I really liked Lost Planet 2 and thought the multiplayer mission mode was a ton of fun despite the Microsoft jankiness. Sadly, Capcom has its fingers in Microsoft's toad hole so it'll end up with bad matchmaking and Games For Windwows Live on PC again.

EA: Worse than foreclosing your house without your knowhow and destroying your life forever, as well as the lives of millions of people around the world.

This just reeks of nerd entitlement. EA is pits and falls under a lot of much worse companies, but because they tripped up on one lowly game nerds are outraged and flock in kind. Although a lot of them live with their parents so I guess the threat of losing housing is minimal at best.

Audiosurf was great when it was the first and only "dynamic music game" on the market.

Then a lot of better and less janky and more interesting ones came up. Like, it took Audiosurf a few years to finally let you play songs with other non-English typesets. That and the scoring system was really dumb and was easily breakable with a few of the ships, such as Ninja Mono would only give you a minimum if you didn't touch anything at all the whole time whereas any other ship could easily double or triple its maximum score.

Personally I had a lot more fun with Beat Hazard than Audiosurf but these things happen. I mean, which one of them got the big Potato Portal 2 bucks? :(

@Delta_Ass: Nah you're crazy.

In my opinion, Obsidian will always be the company Bioware wishes to be. Janky gameplay? Who cares! Mass Effect 1's gameplay was extremely dry and copy-pasted compared to Alpha Protocol's. You have so many options on how to tackle a mission with AP, whereas Mass Effect boils down to, "Use all skills, use refresh skill, do it again. Maybe shoot a few times if its early."

Also Obsidian's writing is probably their greatest strength and doesn't fall into the Mass Effect Trap of, "Oh god I said to be persuasive why are you point a gun at her head Shepard!!" I enjoyed heckling people in AP well more than any conversation in ME1, which probably has to do with having played both recent enough.

So yes I will be really sad if Obsidian closes up shop and Chris Avellone gets moved into say, Bioware.

@Zokari: You are born one sex (usually...and he was).

If you're a male you're more than free to "be" female if you want, but you can not change that you were born with a penis, testicles, and a Y chromosome.

Saying someone can't factually refer to you as "he" anymore is fucking absurd. And frankly if genders are so unimportant anyway, why get so up in arms over calling someone by their genetic sex?

Are you fucking KIDDING ME.

We are in the midst of a debate against sexism and misogyny and now you feel privy to drag around the corpse of TRANSPHOBIA AROUND TOO?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU GIANTBOMB?

Is that what happened, or did he see a comment that he disagreed with and he responded to it? I mean, if someone says the sky is red in the comments, I might respond "no, it's blue," but I'm not trying to drag around the corpse of sky-is-blue-fascism.

But you did do exactly what you're accusing him of by responding this way, didn't you? You're just mad that he has an opinion that rubs you the wrong way.

Lmao. Being transphobic isn't an opinion, it's a form of bigotry. The sky has nothing to do with one's gender and its color is a terrible analogy for that. Thanks for the wake-up laugh.
