I picked up a PSP during the last Black Friday sales, and it's been pretty enjoyable so far. I mean, my DS got a lot of playtime initially, but as releases trickled out and there were less Etrian Odysseys and The World Ends With Yous, I stopped using it for games and instead as my music player.

My PSP is only playing a couple games right now - Peace Walker, Half Minute Hero, Z.H.P. - but they're each fun to play and I can see myself picking up a title or two that I'm interested in every once in a while to keep things fresh. If you were ever on the fence about picking up a PSP now is probably the best time to start playing through the library, and especially so when the NGP comes out.

Part of it could be you're not tapping the jump button (since if you hold it, you kind of float in mid air and can't get up stairs fast enough).
 
Also once you start sliding under the caterpillars you can let go of the slide button and prep for the stairs.
 
Really, though, it's a big issue about timing.
