Personal Game of the Year Musings 2016

List items

  • Just a truly spectacular game, made it to the top with little effort. Charm and polish out the wazoo.

  • I couldn't put this thing down when it came out. And then when I did put it down I couldn't stop thinking about picking it up again. Sounds like a number 2 slot to me.

  • A solid product, though not without a few minor technical difficulties. Definitely my favourite Telltale product since the first Walking Dead season.

  • This sort of thing would've flown completely under my radar had it not been so heavily praised. Throws back to the old Harvest Moon games while vastly improving quality of life.

  • It didn't absorb me as much as its predecessors did from the get go. I'm not sure if it's a sign of lacking quality in the game or if it's just me a little tired of the genre. Despite that, however, it managed to give me many days of enjoyment.

  • Much like the Firaxis joint directly above this one, it didn't quite grab me as much as it's previous release. But, I still enjoyed it immensely. The workshop support gave me too many reasons/excuses to come back, even with it's glaring technical issues.

  • The second entry of the 3DS Phoenix Wright games is as bizarrely technically legal as the other entries in the series, but the overarching plot is probably my favourite of the entire series.

  • I'm generally not into the space 4Xs, but Stellaris still managed to keep me coming back. Never did finish a full game, though.

  • I enjoyed the everloving crap out of this game. Unfortunately, just when the plot seemed like it was really starting to open up, it ends. Much like another game this year, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, I wanted more from it than there was. Unlike Deus Ex, however, it at least managed to satisfy me with what plot there was, earning it my 9 slot.

  • I'm not overly happy about this miraculously making my cut, but looking at the rest of my list I can't say I have anything else worth cutting it in favour of.

  • This was a very close contender for the 10 spot. But while it's probably one of my favourite expansions in Warcraft history, it's still built upon a 12 year old game, and it simply can't hold me like it used to.

  • This was my first Dark Souls I actually gave a fair shot! And I was genuinely terrible at it. So I fired up cheat engine and infuriated all my friends who played it. Good times.

  • I updated my data plan to play this thing. I went outside to play this thing. I walked in areas I had no business being in to play this thing.

  • I like the Kirby games. This is one of those. End of thoughts.

  • I kinda ripped on this earlier in Tyranny's musings. I wish I had enjoyed it more, as Human Revolutions is among my greatest games of all time.

  • I had to triple check to ensure this game actually came out this year. I didn't play much after actual release, but I put a fair bit of time in a while back, so it makes the list on a technicality.

  • Played this along side my wife. She and I had a good time with the story, though by the end I was left marginally unsatisfied.

  • Now cleared of fraudulent advertising in the EU! I put some time in when it first came out. Played a few hours and then promptly returned it. I, like many, many others, fell in front of the hype train on this one and was crushed underneath it.

  • I remembered absolutely nothing from the original game. But still, I played this and genuinely enjoyed it. But, much like the original, I remember jack all after the fact.

  • SUPER. HOT. You get the gist. Great little experience. Most innovative shooter I've player in years, etc, etc.

  • I put about 30 hours into this. This is 30 hours more than I would've expected from a freaking trucking simulator. What's even funnier? My wife WATCHED me play 30 hours of this. I don't know who's crazier.

  • I started this game but never really finished it. I always meant to go back but at this point it's too late. I feel like it really could've ended up higher. Might've even bumped Fire Emblem off the top 10. But for now, it remains here.
