Story

Starbound begins with the player crash landing on an alien planet. Starbound is said to have a "Sandbox Story", which means story missions and quests are treated as their own form of loot to be found by the player.

Gameplay

Starbound is very similar to Terraria gameplay wise, but unlike Terraria the player will be able to travel to other planets with their own unique gravity, monsters, terrain, weather, etc.

Exploration

Planets in Starbound are procedurally generated to be unique from other planets. To travel to other planets players will use a beaten up Space Station, which through playing the game can be restored to its former glory by acquiring a crew, conducting research and unlocking its facilities. Planets have biomes, for example a planet can be a frozen arctic biome or a heavily wooded forest biome. A given biome will vary in how it can look. For example a forest biome can just be a run-of-the-mill forest or it could be a forest where the trees are made of metal. Within the overarching biomes can exist "mini biomes" such as meadows, lakes, etc.

Starbound has a scanning feature that allows the player to scan anything in a world for a description of that object.

Players can claim a planet as their homeworld, which allows the player to customize every aspect of that planet. The player can then populate their homeworld with NPCs they meet on their travels.
