Best of 2015 that didn't come out in 2015

I didn't play a ton of old games for the first time this year, so this list is going to be a top 5.

List items

  • Giant Bomb's obsession with this game might've only lasted for a week or so, but my obsession with this game lasted a decent amount longer. It's two great tastes that taste great together and also Anime as all hell.

  • I was all but ready to write God of War off as outdated, juvenile and simplistic. While there are no doubts about it being juvenile, it's also a deftly made action-adventure game that still holds up, surprisingly.

  • I can't in good conscience say that The Evil Within is a great game. It's far too inconsistent and frustrating to be in the same league as Resident Evil 4, its spiritual predecessor. But when it works, it works very well.

  • Shoot me. I liked Final Fantasy XIII-2. It's pretty good.

  • King's Bounty Dark Side is more King's Bounty. It gets a place on this list by default as the series to fill the gaping hole left by Ubisoft's treatment of the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise.

I do like this strange symbiosis you've established between you and Bound By Flame. It's a game you obviously dislike yet can't find it in you to detach it wholly from your person. Oh, how I know such feelings all too well...

Also, is that a sexy vampire Snow White I see?

I'm amazed. I thought you didn't actually like Xiii-2 very much.

@yummylee: That's... not a bad way of explaining it. Bound By Flame is a garbage video game that sometimes dips into the realm of being unintentionally funny. I could make a case for playing RE6 as an example of everything wrong with modern video games and Resident Evil (that I still can't entirely dislike) but no sane person should play BBF.

King's Bounty: Dark Side is somehow even more freewheeling with its goofy, referential NPCs and quests than previous games in the series, which were already pretty lighthearted and silly. In the case of Sexy Vampire Snow White, she asks you to murder the seven dwarves who kidnapped her when she was young.

@loamlife: I played a decent amount of old games this year, but a lot of it was replaying stuff instead of playing older games for the first time.

@slag:I liked XIII-2 just fine! It's not amazing, but it's a better game than XIII was and I was a big fan of some of the goofy time-travel stuff it did, especially with alternate endings.

Great list! I haven't bought and play any new games in 2015. Have to recheck. This list reminds me of how I play a lot of old games past their launch dates and replay them to beat it completely. I found Persona Q pretty fun. Been playing that along with Persona 3. I fail to do a 100% social links in Persona 3 on my 2nd play through. For some odd reason, I invested more time in Xiii-2 than the original Lightning game. The ending broke my heart once I found out there was no way to get a happy ending after completing all side quests.

@takashichea: I did replay a decent amount of junk this year, but this list is reserved for stuff I played the first time through (which is why it's as sparse as it is). Perhaps most worth mentioning are the 4 Fire Emblem games I had another spin with (Sacred Stones through Shadow Dragon) where I basically had the same opinions that I did the last time I replayed them. If you want to talk that up, I'd be more than happy to.

I have mixed feelings about Persona Q, in that I don't think it's as good as the Etrian Odyssey series is but I think it's pretty great Persona fanservice. Even if it doesn't make the final list, I'll likely have something to say about it in the inevitable companion blog. XIII-2 has a pretty great "Naw, you screwed up you dummies" ending, though it's the alternate endings like the one with Snow on his time-traveling motorcycle that I really appreciated.
