@charlie_victor_bravo: Children of Men is widely considered sci-fi, I've seen it on countless "best sci-fi" lists. There are different types of sci-fi including dystopian sci-fi, so something like Children of Men, V for Vendetta, or Snowpiercer. The Twilight Zone often explored situations like that. Laser swords or cyborgs aren't necessarily needed to be sci-fi. Children of Men is a what if situation set in the future where their problem is science based (biology) there is also some advanced tech, it's just subtle.

@humanity: How is Inception not sci-fi? Its science and technology allows them to go into people's dreams, which is what the film is about. I don't see how The Fountain is sci-fi. The storyline with him in a bubble is just a metaphor.

I'd go Gattaca like some have mentioned here, but that is a 90s movie, so I went Children of Men. The new Blade Runner was pretentious and boring to me.

What game badly does them this year? Battlefront 2 was never going to be a great game with its floaty controls made for casuals. Halo 5 does it worse than Battlefront 2 from what I remember. I'll have to see how Mordor handles it. I get how they can be annoying but did they have some huge expansion this year?

@whitestripes09: I don't agree that critics or consumers complaining about the runtime means we have ADD or just want action. Certain scenes like K walking into the hotel/casino, the hologram sex scene, Deckard punching K in the face, etc dragged on for too long. That mixed with the overlydone lighting felt self-indguent at sometimes.

Yea its gonna be pretty divisive, its a very-stylish and talk-heavy movie and the way people talk about the original Blade Runner pretty much over-inflated expectations. and just like the original Blade Runner, the deeper themes isnt outwardly apparent,

and if you played stuff like Nier Automata or even the movies you mentioned, then you have an idea of the style of beats in the movie already.

That being said, i loved it to pieces, my favorite movie this year, and probably the only movie this year where ive had the theater crowd clap afterwards when it was over.

I wouldn't call it talk-heavy, I actually wished they talked more. I don't think K says a full sentence after he finds out he's not half human. Deckard could've talked a little more too. Certain scenes dragged and there was also no talking going on in them: Deckard punching K in the face over and over seemed like a flat/bad joke, the sex scene with the hologram and prostitute was also way too long IMO. A few scenes dragging and overdone lighting had it on the border of being pretentious to me. I wish I could say I loved it, but I think it's overrated and doesn't belong in the same league as top sci-fi like a Children of Men. I can't say it was awful, it could definitely use some more editing, but I really don't see what's so great either.

@pyrodactyl: I wasn't expecting an action movie - I've seen the first one. I'm not saying you're doing it, but I'd definitely like the thread to stay away from "if you didn't like it then you didn't get it" or "go watch a Michael Bay movie".

I know there's another Blade Runner thread, but that's about if you're going to see it or not. I'd like to talk full spoilers with other people who've seen it already. I wanted to like it since I enjoy the actors, director, etc but I didn't like the movie at all. The director's other movies that I've seen (Sicario and Arrival) are way better. I actually struggle to think what was good about it.

  • Story: Pretty basic, not a bad detective story
  • Visuals: Some scenes looked good, but others look WAY too orchestrated... almost like a music video, especially the scenes with the villain (Leto).
  • Sound: This is my theater's fault, but it was way too loud. The music is hardly music, it's more like vibration/thunder... Inception's trailer music times 12.
  • Theme: I think Battlestar Galactica, Gattaca, and others handled the grand theme far better.

I wanted to buy into the hype but I really don't see what the big deal is. It's way too long and the storyline with the hologram was interesting, but felt inserted and unneeded. Them trying to do the movie "Her" with a hologram in a Blade Runner sequel didn't feel organic to me. The twist of him not being Deckkard's son was interesting, but the effect was underwhelming and so was the climax in the car filling up with water. I know it's subjective, but anyone else feel like this the emperor's new clothes? For the record, I am okay with long and slower movies... No Country for Old Men and Assassination of Jesse James are two of my favorites ever.

Can this movie overcome Jared Leto?

I can see why people would find him annoying, but he is a good actor. If Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club, and Dallas Buyers Club can be great with him, I don't see why this couldn't be. I'm sure a lot of rich/famous people are pretentious and annoying. I've heard worse things about other actors, like Bruce Willis, and that was coming from people who've worked with him like Kevin Smith and Stallone.

I'll probably see this in the theater. I usually go the week after stuff opens, not the first weekend, since it'll be less people so less likely to be annoyed. I like the director (even though I think he gets a little overrated) and the short films have been good. Hopefully the trailer didn't foreshadow or reveal too much, since that made it look like a lot of people are replicants and most humans are really underground with Morgan from The Walking Dead (a twist similar to Oblivion).

I wanted to like it, but don't. I like the concept, never played PUBG, but the gunplay and level design aren't good enough. The gunplay feels like we're shooting paintballs at each other since it lacks that visceral feel and it feels like bullets move too slow. It felt like I was playing Sunset Overdrive without the fun movement system and cool weapons. The level design has too many open fields.

The issue to me is that the psychology aspect of the show never really goes anywhere and that the creators are fine with that. They focus so much on trying to be different, that characterization is pretty much non existence with every character aside from Morty. The problem with this is that when they try to branch out and do these characterization episodes with other characters is that it's so in your face and yet everybody just remains the same afterwards. I guess that's supposed to be the point that the creators are trying to make here, but how often are we going to see this before it just becomes a generic running gag of the show?

May get fried for this, but some of the fanbase for this show need to reevaluate themselves and the show. My first thoughts now on seeing someone with a Rick and Morty shirt is to avoid them like the plague because they're going to hold me down and shove down my throat why Rick is the best character to be written in the last century and why he should be the supreme ruler of the universe because his intellect and logic is flawless.

Watching this season of Rick and Morty just makes me sad that Venture Bros. isn't as popular.

When it comes to fanbases getting big and annoying I think of TDK's quote of "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain", which kinda sums up something like Family Guy. If Family Guy didn't get renewed and stayed cancelled it would be believed like Firefly and other cancelled shows. Now it's kinda looked at as this big annoying thing that annoying people like (like Call of Duty). I think Rick & Morty fans, the louder ones more pretentious ones, could down a similar path.

I like Venture Bros more, but the creators make it hard to follow and keep track of the show. It started 14 years ago and they've only done 6 seasons, so they've limited their own success IMO. People nowadays expect consistency and predictably, so you can't disappear for 1 to 3 years at a time and expect for people to waiting hat in hand.
