This article made me say "YES"

 http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/6432-Extra-Punctuation-Splosion-Man

here's an excerpt from the article if your unfamiliar with "Yahtzee":

"

There's something unpleasantly cynical about 'Splosion Man's presentation. It's 'wacky' in a very hollow, calculated fashion. The references to internet and pop culture memes extend beyond the cake and Portal business - I'm fairly certain the main character occasionally yells 'GET TO DA CHOPPA,' and one of the later bosses parrots the phrase 'FOR SCIENCE,' which are both the kinds of nerd-culture catch-phrases that become annoying within days and wincingly painful the moment you hear them outside of being superimposed onto a picture of a startled cat. And then people who never mentally grew past the age of 15 say things like "THIS IS THE AWESOMEST THING EVER. IT'S SOOO RANDOM."

Yes, random is funny, isn't it? Sometimes I set up a random number generator when I need a good laugh. Get this: First there was a three, and now there's a nine. I'm like, whoa! That's not the number that comes after three! My thighs are now thoroughly tenderized from all the slapping.
"

P.S. Also if you don't already, check out his Zero Punctuation videos and the weekly Escapist magazine at the escapist.com

He is SOOOOOOOO played out and lame now. I became tired of him after about, ten or so episodes. No one likes a super-cynic.

I guess it's more humorous when he is saying it really fast..maybe?

I've never really seen him review a game he actually likes, and even when he has reviews up they're always a good few weeks or a month after they've hit shelves, a point at which I've either bought the game or have stopped caring about its quality. I think it's funny when he shits all over some games, but when it's every single game he reviews it just begs the question: "Why even bother?". He's like this guy, but for video games:

@TheMustacheHero: No, i didn't post it because I thought it was funny. I posted it cause I agree with it. I enjoy the escapist magazine and zero punctuation because it's opinionated and takes a clear stance on the topics/games it decides to write/make a video about.

No, there are games he's admitted to liking. Unfortunately, they all seem to be involved with Valve at some point, in some way.

I laughed. And yes theres been plenty of gmaes he's mentioned liking, Portal, Silent Hill, No More Heroes, and Prince of Persia to name a few. I like that he approches games negatively because thats pretty much how I work, games are crap until they prove their not.

I guess I hadn't watched enough of his reviews, or maybe I just have different tastes.

He is correct though. There's nothing worse than 'random' humour.

Depends on the random. New Cartoon Network? Crap. Old Cartoon Network/ cartoons in general? Great. "
Neither of those are 'random'.

I agree with him.  Between what he described and how Splosion Man is basically a prettier scaled down N+, I wasn't interested in the game.

It's funny you brought up Cartoon Network, because that's exactly what came to mind when playing the Splosion Man demo.  Crappy cartoons.  Like the really bad ones they never even showed on Saturday mornings.

I found Billy and Mandy to be random, at times. What's not random about a rubber duck transforming into a demonic fowl, and then climaxing with a simple "boo?" "
Humour is based on absurdity so you can ask what's not random about a massive Marshmallow sailor storming through New York City but at no point would anyone accuse Ghostbusters of being random.

Good point, but that one's a bit less random, since Stay Puff looks somewhat like a ghost crossed with a sailor. And what's your definition of random? Some of the things in the show I've mentioned definitely qualify as such. I'd show them to you, but I can't find the clips on YouTube.

I think what Yahtzee was trying to get across was that when you start referencing memes, quotes, saying the same thing over and over again to incite a laugh, it begins to lose it's humor and initial "randomness". Therefore it's no longer absurd or random or funny. Like the boy who cried wolf, the hundredth time someone screams "GET IN DA CHOPPA", I can't help but roll my eyes and resist the temptation to cover my face and pretend I don't know what the person is talking about.

What if it's used in proper context, like there actually may be a chopper they must reach, or they discover a cult that believes a cake is their god?

The random I mean and (I hope) Yahtzee means (otherwise i've been talking shit all the way through this thread) is when the humour is based entirely on non-sequitors and references to other things that were funny instead of actually being well written. Just sticking 'Get to the chopper!' in 'Splosion Man as a catchphrase is lazy because that stuff has been used a million times elsewhere and it's only been chosen because it has nothing to do with the context of the game and that kind of intentional zanyness appeals to a depressingly large audience.

I still feel as though you can achieve random humor without resorting to referencing other things without any context. Family Guy doesn't come off as random, does it?

Family Guy is the empitome of lazy random humour considering the show is made up of endless pointless non-sequitor cutaways that usually rely on referencing better material. I think it was Jeff who said it perfectly on the Bombcast the other week when he said that the bulk of Family Guy's humour is 'Do you remember when this was funny somewhere else?'

I just find it condescending. It's like they're saying, "Here's why it's funny, dumbass." If you have to explain your joke, then it isn't funny.
