Oh, also: we now have a theme song courtesy of user Tebbit. It IN NO WAY resembles the George Michael classic "Careless Whisper," so take your cynical accusations elsewhere, jerk!

Well this was an interesting podcast.

Especially enjoyed the topic of hardcore rap as you called it. I am in agreement with Sara on that topic. I think more so then it not being real, one thing I like about the better hip hop artists (beyond their telling the story which was always great) is they tend to be more about sharing their reality.

When I was growing up I lived in east LA. A lot of gang members and other bad things. I could relate a lot to the feeling of being trapped and unable to understand a life without violence or friends dieing- or parents that weren't the greatest. It was always nice and hopeful to hear they made it- maybe I can some day. The good ones weren't so much about sharing how great they are, and all the women they got so much as how they perceive life which was much like the life I knew at the time. The moral of brotherhood and honor was kind of prevalent in many of them as well. I don't know, mainly the relatability (i don't think that's a word but bare with me =P ) was something that connected with me.

There isn't a lot of relatability for me anymore in a lot of forms of music these days. They tend to talk about things that don't matter in a lot of the popular stuff and probably because I'm getting old I don't really know anything newer that's any good but I generally have not heard any new stuff I like.

So I guess it's majority the relatable nature of older hip hop that I like. At least for me. That tends to be how I feel about most music except maybe Techno which I just like in a similar reason to why I like classical.

Anywhos... i wrote a lot so I'll shut up now =P

Dude: that's nuts. My experience with all 'hardcore rap' is through the lens of a dude who grew up relatively privileged, and it's therefore never been relatable to me. Seeing your perspective on it was fascinating, though. Thanks for your comment, and thanks for listening!

Well, old Jay-Z. One listen through The Blueprint III and he's going hard for pop-rap in comparison to most of his stuff. It's not as bad as, say, Eminem on Recovery, but it's pretty heavily pop-fare. That's not just counting the singles, either. I respect hardcore, but I'm personally just not knowledgable enough about it to make a real judgment on the stuff.

I'm surprised to hear that Snoop Dogg is considered hardcore, though. Maybe my perspective is skewed from being born in the 90's, but (sparing the occasional gun reference) songs like "Nothin But A G Thang" and "Gin and Juice" feel like proto-mainstream party hip-hop to me.

This was part of a "noir" photo session with my friend who happens to be a photographer -- did this to help him build his portfolio. Also, I'm not smoking in this photo and I do not smoke. Have you seen my pearly whites?

@the_OFFICIAL_jAPanese_teaBAG: I dunno man. Snoop was almost convicted of murder and Dr Dre rapped some serious stuff about the police and Easy E...seemed pretty hardcore to me.

Sara is like half of everyone I know that think that it's cool to only listen to Ghostface caliber rappers.  
 
She's wrong. Totally enjoy the show, though. There's a churrascaria near me. Despite it being in a mall, it's one of the best places I've ever eaten at. Also craaaazy expensive.

That was a great show. I really enjoyed it.

I bet Sara would love The Girl with the Dragon tattoo. Too bad sex in movies/tv puts off her so much because Game of Thrones is a damn fine TV series. Wow she doesn't like music festivals either, I went to the music Festival Oxegen in Ireland and the atmosphere was unreal everybody was unbelievably friendly; best four days ever. The Foo Fighters played pretty much all their songs late into the night. For the toilet situations you could pay at Oxygen to use the "Fancy Crapper" or shell out extra money to be in the expensive area where they pretty much had houses.

Snoop got his start rapping with Dre on The Chronic, which is most definitely a hardcore rap album. The first single Snoop was on was Deep Cover (as mentioned), which was about killing cops. A murder or attempted murder charge in the early 90s is actually part of what helped make him famous (he was found innocent).

Snoop evolved with the times to stay relevant once OG 90s hardcore rap started falling out of popularity, but he still did a few songs sprinkled here and there.
