Why do people complain about shotguns in Gears? I never understood why. Though the multiplayer never really appealed to me in the first place, isn't the shotty just a close range kill? Ineffective at all but just outside of melee range? People seem like big babies about a tool they should be using themselves.

I'm not sure if this is what Jeff was talking about, but the community for the game definitely took the shotgun stuff too far. Like "Get nasty messages in your inbox telling you to kill yourself if you used any of the other guns" too far.

As someone who played far, far too much Gears of War 2 multiplayer, I can confirm that being able to active reload whenever and it being on a cooldown is INSANE, and also will have a significant impact on how people who take the game seriously play.

You know what guys, it's okay for Jeff or whoever else on here to dislike the game and for others to greatly enjoy it. It's subjective and some people dislike things that others love and vice versa! Get over it! Jeff's word isn't gospel and neither is yours!

Seriously reading the back and forth on here is cause enough to give up on the notion that the Giant Bomb community is one of the more balanced ones on the internet!

Oh no, I'm not saying Jeff's opinion is more correct than anyone else's, I just feel like yelling at him for playing the game wrong is pretty unfair because it didn't really seem like he was doing anything wrong.

@liquidprince: I'm not saying there needs to be overt messaging telling you how to play, I'm saying that blaming Jeff for playing the game wrong isn't really fair if the game didn't make it clearly apparent that he was playing incorrectly through combat encounters. Jeff made it through the whole game playing it that way and, from both the review and the quick look, it didn't sound like it had any adverse effect on the way the game played aside from it being boring to him. If he really were breaking design intentions so hard, you'd think the game would have made it so difficult to play that way that eventually you'd cause players leaning on that playstyle think "I must be doing something wrong."

Enemies flank you in shooters all the time. Hell, looking at the Division, which is a cover shooter ass cover shooter, that's a mechanic that's leaned on heavily and aggressively in the current end game content.

Isn't Jeff "playing the game wrong" more of an indication of poor communication from the game itself more than anything?

I mean, I know sometimes the guys miss fairly obvious stuff, but from watching this, plus the early look from Drew, there doesn't seem to be anything in here that clearly communicates "Hey this isn't a cover shooter don't play it like one". If anything, a lot of the early powers seem to facilitate either popping out from cover and unloading on a guy or navigating from cover to cover quickly.

I love this stupid game. The best thing to do is find a good clan to play games with (and to give you cards), and to just accept right off the bat that you're not going to get a ton of new cards every day. Don't give in and buy gems, just accept the timers and play games just for fun if you have to.

Not that there isn't gross stuff in here, but I wonder when we've all become obsessed with constant progression and not just playing for fun

That's unfair, progression IS fun, and a lack of progression can really suck the fun out of a game. Especially when your ability to play and stand a fair chance against other players is gated by that progression.

Watching this video, I can definitely see some some aspects of that with Brad saying "Man if I just had this one card I could counter what my opponent is doing."

Mothereffer. So instead of "Spectating", this game says you're "fapping"? Pass. Passing on this game so much.

I'm pretty sure that was just the username of the person he was spectating.

I understand not wanting to use controllers for early VR games, because you want to sell people on the magic, but man that control scheme sounds really awkward and bad. I think that magic is going to quickly give way to frustration when you throw motion control gimmicks that have already came and gone in terms of popularity into the mix.

It wouldn't surprise me if devs quickly realized that traditional controllers generally still make for the best feeling experience. Honestly, if they can mimic the Wii U gamepad in terms of marrying traditional control methods with crazy motion controls, that would be cool. Like Dan commented in the Twilight Princess Wii U quick look, the motion controls in conjunction with traditional controls just feel right for things those sorts of things, and I think you could easily translate that type of experience into the VR headset.

Something about the art style and animation from this developer really doesn't do it for me. It's not as present here compared to their previous games but you can still tell from it's odd, lanky character design and thick lines. Something about their games reminds me of what edgy teens that shopped at Hot Topic in the early 2000's would make. Beyond that though it appears mechanically fine in its gameplay.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of that either. It worked in Charlie Murder but it looks really, really odd in this game. That combined with the fact that this game is so, so blatantly Dark Souls kind of makes me feel like this is a low effort indie ripoff. Even if that's not really the case, and it likely isn't, it still really puts me off.

Probably doesn't help that I burned out on Charlie Murder super hard.
