• This is actually the first game I ever played. And what a great way to start, too. My uncle had a NES back in the day which I played religiously every time I came around on birthdays and whatnot. Eventually they let me borrow it and I remember keeping the console powered on overnight, fearing I might loose progress. I actually got to the final world but I don't know if I ever beat Bowser because of the insane difficulty of World 8. Regardless, I have really fond memories of this game, the bosses, the music and overall atmosphere this game has. I even hyped myself up to get this game once I had bought a Wii. Go figure.

NES | Release: 1991/08/29

 • The first installment in the franchise and as far as I'm concerned, the best. I played the PC version a hell of a lot of times back in the '90s as a kid, although most of the time I had no idea what I was doing. There's a certain system to this game, for instance, people like to live in an area near the water and not next to industrial areas. Once you realize these things you're able to expand your city across the entire map. What to do when you've accomplished that? Well, make a mess of it and destroy the whole damn town of course! Monsters, earthquakes and planecrashes is what's the cruel fate of your thriving city and destroying it all is probably the most fun of all.

• I loved this game from the first time I saw footage of it late last year, when I was considering buying a Wii and checking out some of the library. I love 2D platformers and this hybrid between RPG and 2D platformer with some nice 3D elements thrown in made what would later become the first game I bought for the Wii, before I even got the little white system itself. Gorgeous worlds, a cute soundtrack and a great, mysterious story with some NPCs that do tend to ramble on a lot at times. Looking at the game at a whole, it was just what I was expecting and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

• My most anticipated Wii game hands down. Been looking forward to it for months, watched every trailer and gameplay video at least five times and looked at the Wii Wheel, wondering if it would control the way I had hoped. It did. The game matched all my expectations and surpassed it in many ways. I've had tons of fun getting star ranks on the single player Grand Prix, competing in ghost races, getting the fastest time on the time trials, the biweekly challenges and astonishing local and online multiplayer. And the first time I sat there with the Wii Wheel in my hands I couldn't help but just smile. And even after playing Mario Kart Wii to death on a daily basis for weeks, I still keep coming back to it.

• This game reminds me of the classic Disney movies. They were great to watch and as a little kid, they're suspenseful and had a certain kind of magic. Super Mario Galaxy tries to do the same and succeeds, from the tremendous opening scene at the Star Festival to the incredibly fun levels, varied worlds, and impressive boss fights and interesting story, it all just feels like one big adventure. One of the finest games on the Wii in the art and sound department featuring the most impressive soundtrack I've ever heard, which just adds to the already great atmosphere. Everything combined just makes a package that reaches gaming perfection.

• Impressive in every aspect. Perfect IR controls, amazing art, great music and cute sound effects and at times very challenging gameplay. There's also a hint of mystery added with the sometimes helpful signs from the Signpainter. And what exactly is the World of Goo corporation? All right, so it's not that interesting, but a nice touch nonetheless. Different species of goo make for some very varied and addictive gameplay. You're always curious to see the next level and the challenge that comes with it, something not every game is able to do. A real breath of fresh air that puts most retail Wii games to shame.

• Of the few JRPGs I've played on the DS, this is the best one. The amazing 3D visuals and sprites, catchy soundtrack, classic gameplay and great story make this one of the best games the DS has seen this year. The bit I liked the most was the fact the game was split into different chapters that were all neatly woven together in the end. It doesn't take itself to seriously and the different accents in all parts of the world are a nice touch. Another one of Square-Enix' masterpieces.

• I bought this game knowing that working out with Wii Fit won't assure your gold medal at the Olympics, but I'm positive that if you'd combine working out 30 minutes a day with Wii Fit with a healthy diet, it really is possible to lose weight. Even if you just use it a few times a week you'll feel better about yourself and at the very least, you'll stay fit. Putting that aside though the stats and graphs this game provides are something I always used to do so it's actually pretty cool it saves all these things automatically. The minigames, and especially the ski and puzzle ones are a great addition and also a nice demo for possible upcoming games in those genres. And in the minigames lies one of the true powers of Wii Fit: making exercise easy and fun.

• "It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum... and I'm all out of gum!" is just one example of the many things you can hear Duke say throughout the game. Even though this game was made back in '96 and looks like crap visually, a few fans of the game made the High Res pack to keep this game playable for us to enjoy on current PCs. The first FPS I've ever played and it still gets dusted off every once in a while because of it. There's just something unique about being mankind's last hope against an alien invasion. Played it to death back when it came out, and about three years ago with some friends when I discovered the High Res pack. Amazing at the time and still a blast to play now.

• The first Castlevania game I played and it got me hooked. On the technical side, amazing sprite animation and some real nice tunes. On the gameplay side, there are some challenging boss fights, intriguing story with multiple endings and an amazing final level. As I said, before this I'd never played a Castlevania game so I was pleasantly surprised to see RPG elements thrown in with a platform game. Suffice it to say, it just feel like a natural combination and delivers a really satisfying, albeit short game.

• I've always been a sucker for platform games. So naturally, when I bought a Game Boy Color and was searching for some nice games fitting that genre, I came out with Wario Land 3. I didn't know anything about the game, the only thing I had seen were the boxart and the screenshots on the back of the box. I never would have imagined the kind of fun that game brought me, playing it for weeks on end, loving with the nice animations, variation in levels and puzzling gameplay. The greatest entry in the series and perhaps the best game on the Game Boy Color.

• It may sound strange, but the reason I bought this game was Ocarina of Time. I didn't have enough money at the time to afford a N64, but I did have a Game Boy Color so I decided to get this Zelda game. The amount of content and special effect that were put in this game is a real technical feat. Back then it literally took me days to complete some dungeons, I even called Nintendo's helpdesk once when I couldn't figure out I had to sprinkle some magic dust to light some unlit torches in order to advance to the next room. This happens to be the first game for which I used a walkthrough to find a way to get through a maze, and let's just say this wouldn't be the last Zelda game I ever needed help with. All in all a great an completely immersive experience which makes this the best of the 2D Zelda games.

• Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the first and greatest Sonic game I've ever played. The first time I did so I just had a demo disc for the PC containing the first level, which I've literally played to death as Sonic, Sonic and Tails, just Tails and of course Knuckles. When I finally was able to play the full game it totally blew me away, because it's insanely fun. Great visuals and classic gameplay make this one of the finest platformers off all time.

• I'm usually not one for puzzle solving. In fact, I'm really bad at it and so at first sight this would not be the game for me. However, once I got to play it, I was immediately hooked. Just the fact that it's such a polished and charming game with some amazing cutscenes and humorous dialogue will keep you entertained for days. The feeling you get when you've solved seemingly impossible puzzles is just so damn fun. For me, it really justified owning a DS, because there's no other system out there that can offer these kinds of puzzles and this kind of experience. Let's hope the sequel will be just as good.

Nintendo DS | Release: 2008/11/07

 • The first 3D Zelda that just delivers on all bases. I never owned a N64 so the first time I played this was on an emulator 5 years ago. What can I say, I knew the series and what it was about, but I never would have thought this game would be so great. Amazing graphics, gameplay and a legendary story full of twists and great cinematic scenes. Don't forget the finale which can still give me goosebumps and you instantly get why this is the top game of all time across all systems on GameRankings and Metacritic.

• As you can probably tell by looking at some of my other favorite games, I really love platformers. Especially when they have some original new features to bring to the genre, which this game most certainly does. The whole game just oozes charm and polish, from the incredible soundtrack to smooth animation, beautiful worlds and tricky boss fights. A bit of a pain to play on modern PCs, but seeing it all in motion and playing it again makes it all worthwhile.

• When I bought the original Game Boy, this was the first game my parents gave me. As with most games back then, I played this game to death. Literally, because the cartridge is dead now, so I have to rely on emulators to play this gem again. It's certainly one of the best looking Game Boy games, with one of the greatest soundtracks ever created. Also, together with the first Super Mario Land, one of the few Mario games Shigeru Miyamoto didn't have a big hand in. The original gameplay and interesting storyline and boss fights make this a portable Mario game you just can't miss.

• I've had lots of fun playing the PS2-era iterations of the GTA games, there was just a right balance between the wacky and the serious in the storyline and most of the missions were incredibly fun to play. It just felt really fresh, like something I've never played before. But when I played a bit of the much hyped GTA IV at my friends place, I just didn't feel it. It lacked all kinds of atmosphere and just seemed like more of the same, but this time in HD. Then came Bully: Scholarship Edition and I was just thrown back to some of that classic GTA III-like goodness. It all looked and played awfully familiar, but it was more than just a cheap GTA clone. Interesting characters and a nice little story make for some pretty fun missions and great Wii Remote controls. It's more than just a port in that respect and the thing that's the most fun is making out with girls and beating the crap out of fellow students afterwards, with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. If there's ever going to be a GTA on the Wii, please keep Bully in the back of your head.
