My Virtual Console Games

Games I've downloaded from the Wii's Virtual Console service.

List items

  • Hands down the greatest platformer of all time. Everything you'd expect in a platformer is there and the memories I have playing this game as a kid and loving every minute of it is what makes this game one of the best of all times. And I even owned the domino game!

NES: 1991/08/29 | Virtual Console: 2007/11/09 | My score: 5/5.

  • Holy crap this is one hardcore game. Nice early generation NES graphics and catchy tunes and once you get past the first world, this game actually ain't that hard. Comparatively.

NES: 1987 | Virtual Console: 2007/02/23 | My score: 4/5.

  • The second game I've ever played and again, one of the best ever. The different abilities, well-balanced difficulty, the colorful soundtrack and worlds really came alive in the dying days of the NES. Hands down the best Kirby game.

NES: 1993/12/09 | Virtual Console: 2007/02/16 | My score: 5/5.

  • Decent platformer but completing it feels like a chore and collecting enough fruit to end a level is just kind of pointless.

Nintendo 64: 1998/04/09 | Virtual Console: 2007/10/26 | My score: 2/5.

  • I've watched a friend of mine complete this game in less than 6 hours. I was impressed by the speed he had done it in, but I don't know, the game just felt flat to me and really lacks atmosphere.

Super NES: 1992/09/24 | Virtual Console: 2007/03/23 | My score: 3/5.

  • Another Nintendo franchise I never played before I got the Wii. Great game, nice puzzles and setting and challenging boss fights. However, I have yet to finish it.

Super NES: 1994/07/28 | Virtual Console: 2007/10/12 | My score: -

  • A great platformer, but for me, it's just lacking. The music is not that spectacular and gameplaywise it's not that much of an improvement over Super Mario Bros. 3. Good overall, but not the best platformer ever.

Super NES: 1992/06/04 | Virtual Console: 2007/02/09 | My score: 4/5.

  • I just view this as an expansion pack for the original SMB, and first played it when it was included with Super Mario Bros. DX for the Game Boy Color. Nice game, but not the leap you'd expect a sequel to take from the original.

FDS: 1986/06/03 (J) | Virtual Console: 2007/09/14 | My score: 3/5.

  • Amazing story and gameplay, great characters and an unforgettable story make this the greatest 3D Zelda game ever made.

Nintendo 64: 1998/12/11 | Virtual Console: 2007/02/23 | My score: 5/5.

  • Not great like the first SMB for the NES, and a bit too hard to beat nowadays. Luckily I was able to lay my hands on the GBA remake which was pretty charming in it's own way and kinda sold me on the game.

NES: 1989/04/28 | Virtual Console: 2007/05/25 | My score: 4/5.

  • The original Mario game which I first played on the Game Boy Color. Even though it has just basic visuals, the gameplay which we all know is what makes this a great game that was defining for the platform genre.

NES: 1987/05/15 | Virtual Console: 2007/01/05 | My score: 4/5.

  • I'd never played a Castlevania game before this one so I decided to download it just for the heck of it. Didn't touch it 'til after I played DS's Dawn of Sorrow and when compared to that game this just seems so archaic. Great game, but falling short of the modern day entries in the series.

Super NES: 1992/11/23 | Virtual Console: 2006/12/29 | My score: 2/5.

  • This is an amazing fighting game, also the first one of it's kind I ever played so I really can't compare it with anything. Still, the difference between characters and combo's that are nearly impossible to remember make this a great game which I have yet to master.

Super NES: 1993 | Virtual Console: 2007/07/20 | My score: 4/5.

  • This is one of the Nintendo franchises I never played before I got a Wii. When I did though, it was an amazing experience. Great voice acting, nice gameplay and pretty challenging boss fights make this yet another game that I haven't finished yet.

Nintendo 64: 1997/07/01 | Virtual Console: 2007/04/20 | My score: 4/5.

  • The greatest of the classic Sonic games, when combined with Sonic & Knuckles. Hands down my favorite entry in the series. Good story, great gameplay, classic sound effects and music. The day Sonic 3 & Knuckles hits the VC I will be there.

SEGA Mega Drive: 1994/02/24 | Virtual Console: 2007/09/07 | My score: 5/5.

  • I remember seeing an ad for Sonic 2 in a magazine as a kid. It was just a single image of Sonic on a moon base but it just wowed me. Then I looked at the price of the Mega Drive and I realised my parents would never buy me this.

SEGA Mega Drive: 1992/11/24 | Virtual Console: 2007/07/06 | My score: 4/5.

  • I loved Super Paper Mario so I just bought the original for future play.

Nintendo 64: 2001/10/05 | Virtual Console: 2007/07/13 | My score: -

  • I heard so much about this game that I just had to try it for myself. A short experience, but full of classic arcade goodness.

Neo Geo: 1996/05/24 | Virtual Console: 2008/05/09 | My score: 4/5.

  • The sequel to the original Neo Geo game. It suffers from terrible, terrible slowdown which completely ruins the game.

Neo Geo: 1998/04/02 | Virtual Console: 2008/11/28 | My score: 1/5.

  • The classic that started it all, not as great as it's sequel, but the gameplay is all there.

NES: 1989/12/13 | Virtual Console: 2007/06/22 | My score: 3/5.

  • The benchmark for the series. It would never get better than this game, although it's impossible to finish on your own. Frustration is the most fun with two players.

NES: 1990/12/14 | Virtual Console: 2007/12/14 | My score: 4/5.

  • First Mario Kart game I ever played that really hooked me to the franchise. There's just something about this series that just really speaks to me, the atmosphere, difficulty and content. Everything combined makes an excellent game.

Nintendo 64: 1997/06/24 | Virtual Console: 2007/01/26 | My score: 5/5.

  • In anticipation of Super Star Ultra I just bought this Kirby game, knowing it was mediocre at best. Far too easy and lacking any kind of atmosphere present in older and newer Kirby games. Even the music is kind of bad.

Nintendo 64: 2001/06/22 | Virtual Console: 2008/03/07 | My score: 2/5.

  • The first rendition of the franchise, which I have yet to play.

Super NES: 1998/01/29 | Virtual Console: 2008/01/04 | My score: -

  • As with Comix Zone, I first played this one on the PC. It actually came free of charge with the new computer. Those were the days. For a ten year old this is actually a pretty hard game, but the beautiful environments totally make up for it.

SEGA Mega Drive: 1993/07/31 | Virtual Console: 2006/12/08 | My score: 4/5.

  • At the time a great looking platformer, that still impresses to this day.

Super NES: 1994/11/24 | Virtual Console: 2006/12/08 | My score: 4/5.

  • The sequel to one of the great SNES platformers. Haven't played it yet.

Super NES: 1995/12/14 | Virtual Console: 2007/05/18 | My score: -

  • Usually I just try to reach the end of the slope the fastest, because I really suck at performing tricks. Fine controls and holds up graphically.

Nintendo 64: 1998/11/30 | Virtual Console: 2008/01/18 | My score: 4/5.

  • I was just dying for some racing action when I bought this. I remember playing Cruis'n World in an arcade once and loving it, so I was hoping this would kinda be the same. It kinda is, but it's not that great and a bit repetitive.

Nintendo 64: 1996 | Virtual Console: 2008/03/28 | My score: 2/5.

  • Great beat-em-up which I first played in the late '90s, so I was thrilled to see it on the Virtual Console. Presented like you're really in a comic book, which works great, never seen anything like it since. Nowadays I still get stuck on the second page of the third chapter. Damn this game.

SEGA Mega Drive: 1995 | Virtual Console: 2007/02/02 | My score: 4/5

  • Just wanted a classic turn-based JRPG, so I went out and got myself this one, since it's supposedly one of the best on the Virtual Console. Now if I could just find myself with 30 hours of free time I'd be golden.

SEGA Mega Drive: 1995/12/08 | Virtual Console: 2008/11/14 | My score: -

  • Really enjoyed Mega Man 2 and 9, so why not try this one as well?

NES: 1992/02/20 | Virtual Console: 2008/11/14 | My score: -

  • Classic platformer on the Sega Master System, also tried Adventure Island on the NES but it has harder enemies and throws you back to level 1-1 each time you die and I just wanted to play a relaxing game. Hence this version, the music, the difficulty and the level designs are just awesome. A true classic.

SEGA Master System: 1987 | Virtual Console: 2008/04/11 | My score: 5/5.

  • Another classic which I haven't played yet.

Nintendo 64: 1999/09/14 | Virtual Console: 2009/01/23 | My score: -

  • Good platformer, but terrible music. The invincibility theme is pretty catchy though. Later levels can be a bit too tough at times.

TurboGrafx-16: 1990 | Virtual Console: 2006/12/08 | My score: 4/5.

  • Awesome, and looking great still to this day.

Super NES: 1995/01/26 | Virtual Console: 2009/03/20 | My score: 4/5.

  • I have never completed this game, only played the first hour or so, so no opinions on this one yet.

    Nintendo 64: 2000/11/17 | Virtual Console: 2009/04/03 | My score: -.
