@gtxforza:

It's really hard to like the MK series if you don't have people you know to play it with. It's gotten better over time since the modern games have enough singleplayer stuff to be worth playing. Though if your problem is more fundamental with the fighting system or content, then that's a different matter.

@manburger:

I said it was a trick question. Also no.

JagDoom is the DoomPort of record in the 90s for a reason.

@rebel_scum: That would be the funniest outcome imaginable.

My concern is that Hamilton is falling for the same trap that Vettel and Alonso fell for of thinking, "but what if I won in a Ferrari?" and that it would go about as well. I doubt Mick is ever getting back into an F1 car, but I can see there being a straight swap of Hamilton for Sainz. Carlos is the most reliable journeyman in the sport, and he had his Best Of The Rest year with a Mercedes powertrain. Merc has a year of leeway to figure it out, so maybe they'll find a way to poach Lando.

I usually like Steamworld games, so I thought this would be a good time, and it mostly was. It has the basic town management loop going on, and the mine stuff could have been a good addition. It's just in practice where juggling the town and the mine doesn't really work past the first three or so hours. I didn't finish the game, I got to the part where you need to fuel up the rocket while the monster spawners are constantly popping off and before I quit out of disgruntled apathy.

The production pipelines it wants you to use don't hold together well and the map isn't good for town layout, especially as you need to expand in the late game. I'm not an expert at this genre, but it felt off. Probably a 7/10 kind of game if I'm being generous.

Hell yeah, TRAG.

You should play more Skyward Sword so that I can taunt you for using waggle.

@judaspete: @manburger:

Hopefully the brain fog stays away this time. I'm as shocked as anyone that the Jaguar had entirely ok games on it.

Oh, and I couldn't find anywhere to put this in the blog, but it needs to be seen.

Finally, some else brave enough to admit that Sludge Life 2 is good. You should get around to Bombrush Cyberfunk.

You're not a re4l gam3r unless you've downloaded multiple redumps that you swear you'll poke around with one day.

@atheistpreacher: I'm glad you're enjoying these! There's a lot to say, so I'll follow your bulleted format.

  • This is more of a walkthrough than last time because the important point for this thing is the structure. It would take a book sized write-up to go into all of the weird individual design choices, and after 8000 words I was tired of thinking about this game.
  • You can consider my completion times to be a minimum for casual playthroughs since I unabashedly used outside resources the whole time. Maybe tack on another 5 to 10 hours for a blind playthrough of all these games.
  • Between the different translations and From's own tinkering, the world building is so inconsistent across all these games. Seath is portrayed in the KF1 and 2 as unambiguously good, but that would have been easily retconned in 3. It's all mysterious and fragmentary in-game, but like with the Souls series, when you step back and lay it all out it's just C-tier fantasy writing.
  • Yeah, our boi Giant Kraken was placed to be a n00b killer for no good reason.
  • Those loading corridors were so impractical for the hardware that they wouldn't come into fashion until like ten years later.
  • I did get the ruinous boots using that same method, I just forgot about it.
  • I made a snide remark about the minecart in the post, but it didn't leave that big an impression because I was never sniped out of it. I guess I'm just built different.
  • I had no desire to fool around with random item drops, and thankfully it isn't necessary.
  • It probably is called the Dark Slayer. I never got that weapon so I'm just going off the linked guide.
  • If it hadn't been for the first game's bullshit, I would have never even known there was sword magic in this one.
  • I tried that helmet on and immediately took it off the first time it damaged me. What a dumb item.
  • Do you know why you can get the Tron maze on the first try? All you have to do is take the left-most teleporter and you get to Guyra in like four hops. The devs might have just been tired when it came time to implementing that maze.
  • I did know about that Moonlight Sword exploit, but it isn't necessary so I didn't do it. There was probably an earlier build of the game where you get it as part of the progression, but they changed their minds at some point and didn't take out the usability.
  • Oh, I'll talk about KF3's map, don't you worry.

Probably the funniest thing about this is that the first King's Field is still somehow my favorite one in the series. There are so many small details and anecdotes that I had leave out of the post, such as the skeletons popping out of chests, From's sick original logo, or everything going on here.

I played the DS remake of Final Fantasy III when I was in college and it ruined my life. This will always be the worst mainline FF for me, even if every other version is less incompetent.

The Dragon Quest games were unambiguously better than the FF games in the 8-bit era and at least on par in the 16-bit era, but the west saw almost none of that rivalry play out and Enix gave up in the mid-90's.

@bigsocrates: If you want to play a bad Flashback game with a whole third dimension, I would recommend Fade to Black. It's atrocious.
