Things I learned over the weekend - Monday, 4 October 2010

Another weekend, another update to my brain's vast catalogue of probably-not-going-to-save-my-life knowledge!

Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard has some genuinely funny moments in it.

I bought Eat Lead on the cheap last Friday, for two reasons. Firstly, after finishing Halo: Reach a couple of times, I just wanted some inexpensive shootery action before diving back into Oblivion. Secondly, my boss is away in America for 8 weeks and I really want to go some way to bridging the gap between our GamerScores (he's about 22,000 ahead of me). While most of the attempts at humour are pretty weak – Will Arnett's doing the best with what he's got – there have been a few spots where it dragged the chuckles out of me.

As for the action, I'm actually enjoying it despite myself. I know it's a pretty clunky game overall but there are some cover mechanics I think are pretty nifty improvements in the stop 'n' pop sub-genre. I'm certainly not in love with the game but for what I wanted going in and the price I grabbed it for, it has been the perfect thing to switch my brain off with.

There's a difference between Kaffir limes and Tahitian limes

Aussie summer + alcohol + lime = YO
Aussie summer + alcohol + lime = YO
(Yes, Sweep, more gardening!) I guess this one's obvious, since they have different names. I guess what I really learned is what makes the two stand apart from each other. Kaffir limes don't grow any reasonably useful fruit - as the dude at the nursery said, they look like "little withered brains." The Kaffir lime is only really used for its zest and its leaves when you need them for cooking.

If you want to grow lime fruit that's edible – y'know, like the one you'd fish out of your vodka, lemon, lime and bitters – you need to go with the Tahitian lime. And this is exactly what my lass and I have done, with a darling little dwarf Tahitian lime tree sitting in a large pot just outside our back door. This has been more my girlfriend's initiative, and I asked why she wanted one so. She replied that it'll be perfect for making our own mojitos at home. Always thinking, she is. What a gal.

Also for unknown reasons I found it incredibly easy when it came to growing kumquats. I accidentally threw away an old one and then a plant was there in its place a couple months latter.

@ZombiePie: Yeah, I was considering pumpkins at some stage; we've got a back corner of our block that might be right for it. The other thing my lass wants to grow in that space, though, is passion fruit. She's full of strange and wonderful ideas, that girl. As for kumquats, are they ever really edible? Every time I've tried one, they're always bitter little buggers.

@buzz_clik:  Kumquats make a wonderful preserve. Other than that you have to boil/candy them in order to make them edible.

I used to have a delicious blood orange tree in the back, but when I moved had to leave it behind.  I would highly recommend those if you've got the right area to cultivate one, puts regular oranges to shame.

Blood oranges are boss for mixing drinks as well. You get great flavor, and a cooler color than regular OJ. Great for sangria too.

@buzz_clik:  Ever buy any "as seen on TV" gardening gimmicks?  My mom actually got those ridiculous upsidedown tomato grower things.  I say ridiculous, but it actually works pretty damn well.

@Marino: Nah, never. After doing multiple arduous garden-related chores as a kid for my dad, I'd not really seen growing things as a relaxing or interesting way to pass the time. It's only now that I've got my own house that came with its own fruit trees that I feel the need/want to engage in the whole gardening thing.

Good god, more interest about limes on GB than I would have thought. This has evolved into a serious discussion of gardening.

No, you are buzz_clik, creator of awesome arty things for awesome sites about video games, who apparently also gardens limes on the side.

I'm somewhat disappointed to discover that Australian limes are not giant and deadly compared to the ones we have in America. Way to break the mold.

Mr Nitro pb's Dark Mojitos
1 1/2 oz (44ml) good, high proof dark rum, like Black Seal, or Sailor Jerry, or Appleton
teaspoon agave nectar, or less to taste
4-5 good mint leaves
3 lime wedges
ginger ale
ice
In a shaker, add ice, agave, rum, mint- ripped in half, and squeeze 2 of the wedges and add the rinds. Shake the shit out of it until the nectar is properly mixed in, then pour to glass, add fresh ice if needed, and a splash of ginger ale, garnish with 3rd lime, and maybe a sprig of mint.

@Mrnitropb: The ginger ale is a nice touch. My personal favorite drink also involves that delicious substance, but it has nothing to do with mojitos.

Also, I definitely wish citrus trees would grow here in the mountains. It's pretty much crab apples or nothing as far as fruit goes. My mom did have some success with her garden due to us actually getting a monsoon season this year, including some ridiculously large zucchini.

Maybe, maybe not. It's certainly not my default drink, but on the right hot Aussie summer day (coming soon!) there's not a lot that tops it.

@Mrnitropb: Badass, cheers for that. I shall recreate this at the first available opportunity!

@yoshimitz707: I've no idea, because our little tree is still growing and hasn't produced any useable fruit yet. I really want it to get its snack on at some stage, because I'd love to post a picture of its branches being filled with delicious green orbs. As it stands, I'll just have to make do with the fact that our fig tree is making a shitload of figs at the moment.

Now off you trot, and enjoy your freshly squeezed Quest juice.

Assuming you finished Eat Lead, would you recommend the game to people now that it's probably ridiculously cheap?

I beat Eat Lead sometime last year. It had its moments, but there were some incredibly frustrating parts that made me want to break my controller (especially the last fight). I did enjoy all the achievements at the very end, though.

@Wrighteous86: I guess so, yeah. I have oddly fond memories of sitting there and drinking a beer on a sunny afternoon and S-Ranking it. It's certainly not a game that set the world on fire, but it's a passable way to while away some spare time, especially at the price it must be going for these days.

@Vito_Raliffe: The last fight was only frustrating for me because there's a cheevo tied to doing something in it; trying to complete the task while not dying was a right bitch.

@Vito_Raliffe: It was the Observe the Grenade, where you had to kill three testers at once with one shot from a grenade launcher (more of a pain in the arse than it sounds). Even worse was the fact that it didn't specify they had to be in the last level with the boss - for ages I was killing three or more of them in the level before and not getting the achievement. Grrr.

Nope, I don't have that one! I must have just sucked or something. All I can remember is running from cover to cover and getting killed very quickly.

@buzz_clik Have you ever tried a limequat? I just discovered them after looking up your Tahitian lime and now I'm fascinated by it. I don't think it would survive here in Canada though.

BTW did you do the chat dragon?

@jonnybob: Nope, never had a limequat, although I can guess what goes into making one. Would it have the bitterness of a cumquat? Hell, now you've sent me on a Google Quest.

And nope, I didn't make the chat dragon. I think that might have been a Dave Snider joint. Someone in the Make Things Look Pretty department of Whiskey, anyway.

@rawrsair: I don't think it's bad, but it can't hurt to try new things to see if you like them. Of course, I don't go around eating them like they're oranges - they're usually something to add while cooking or making delicious boozy beverages.

But yeah, you should totally have a lime one at some point. How about right now?

I think it's fine if that's what you're into - it's just not my thing. Also, should someone's first experience with a lime or a lemon be to eat one in such a way? (You'll probably say yes, right?)

@Legend: Actually, not really. That was just a big, weird coincidence!
