Nothing irritates me more than female gamers who go out of their way to declare that they are indeed REAL GIRLS who play VIDEO GAMES, and then take embarrassingly sensuous pictures with say, a PSP. "Oh hi I'm a Gamer Girl. I hope this gets your attention but don't hit me, tee hee!" . Gamer Girl is quite possibly the saddest fucking thing you could call yourself.
 
Same goes for the males that get shocked out their skulls over the thought that a girl might enjoy electronic gamery. Get a goddamned GRIP.

I think the problem is your use of the term girl. I prefer dudette! I can't see how "girls" could relate to any of this, dudettes however would! A video game woman is a man's woman, like Elaine Benes. No I'm not a dudette, just a dude.

It seems like the ones who make it their mission to play up the "girl" aspect don't actually play or know a whole heck of a lot about games. It's just a niche that they've figured out is relatively untapped and therefore easier to get attention in. In a weird way it's almost like....who are they trying to convince?

Exactly.  This Giant Bomb blog post about Youtube user UltraNeko is basically about that: a girl who didn't really like video games, but managed to build a big fanbase and climb her way up the fame ladder.  I mean, she got to attend E3 and rounded up Metal Gear voice actors, and she just started as a Youtube user.  A guy wouldn't have been able to get as popular as quickly. "

I've seen a couple... one in a thread that derailed when the girl told a creep that his PM was inappropriate. Was funny to see the guy squirm :P 
But yeah, hopefully you'll not be bombarded by PMs...  

edit: just wanted to add something else. Although girl gamers should be accepted as norm just like guys, it's a sad fact that a higher percentage of guys enjoy games than girls. Out of all the girls i know, maybe 1/10th were interested in games and pretty much all of those girls played very "casual" games like wii sports. I have yet to find a single girl in real life who could share my interest in games, or most peoples here for that matter. I have yet to find a single girl who would give me a run for my money in an online FPS and that's probably why most guys shit themselves at the knowledge of a girl on a videogame website. You wouldn't be signed up here if you weren't one of us ;)

all I know is, the cool ones are out there.
and this thread has taught me that I'm apparently oblivious to female gamers on the internet.
