Best of 2012

2012 was a mixed bag of goodies. There were some highs, but I felt there were even more lows than previous years. End of a console life-cycle? More busy than usual with school and real life? Who knows. I bought an extremely fancy PC in November, and I've hardly touched my Xbox 360 since then. Next year will no doubt be very interesting with some big titles being released very soon, but especially if Microsoft and Sony will reveal their next consoles.

As usual I haven't been able to play every big title released this year. Sleeping Dogs, for example, is high on my what-to-play-next-list, but figured I wouldn't be able to play it before making this list. So here we go, my personal top 10 of 2012!

List items

  • Alright, so the first weeks near release wasn't very impressive, but this is without a doubt the game I've enjoyed the most this year. Hundreds of hours, and still playing on a weekly basis several months after release. And with every patch Blizzard improves stuff, in my opinion.

This game definitely split the gaming community in half. Half is in my corner, still playing several hours every week. The other half was hellbent on hating the game, and often you question if they even reached Inferno. Nonetheless, an awesome game if you're in to that kind of stuff!

  • This one honestly came as bit of a surprise to me. And I'm quite sure it wouldn't make it this high up on my list if it wasn't for my fancy new PC allowing me to play in amazing settings. The game itself is extremely satisfying as well, even if the main story and sidequests somewhat disappointed in the end. Everything was a bit too repetitive, which is not what you want in an open world game. Still, amazing FPS with amazing graphics and gameplay all around.

  • Another open world game that was a bit too repetitive for its own good, but in the end I spent more than 100 hours doing everything I could find. The combat was very satisfying, and even if the story and sidequests wasn't too impressive I still had a great time. Too bad we'll most likely never see a sequel.

  • I truly wish this game could have lived up to my hype, but sadly it fell flat on several points. Me and my friends played (and still play) the original, so seeing the game a bit too much streamlined was a shame to see. Still, it's the best strategy game I've ever played on a console, and I really hope the team will continue in this fashion and hopefully improve stuff for a sequel.

  • Without a doubt the best downloadable title this year. A million times better than Shank, and I really hope Klei will do similar titles. Can't recommend this game enough, make sure you get it if you can.

  • Probably my biggest disappointment of the year, even if it makes it to the sixth place on my top 10. First third of the game was extremely good, but then things just went downhill. It felt like the team ran out of development time, and the Earth level is a prime example of bad game design. If the entire game was like the first parts of the game it definitely would end up higher on the list.

  • After spending close to 150 hours on the first game I was extremely excited to play the sequel. Then the sequel arrived, and I was bored of it almost before I made it halfway through the story. I even bought the season pass, and have barely touched any of the DLC. I think Gearbox just didn't want to take any risks with the sequel, but sadly everything just felt too familiar. Hopefully they learned their lessons for the inevitable third game.

  • Another downloadable gem, even if it's not exactly my type of game. Had fun unlocking everything, but really can't see myself trying to beat the very difficult stages. Still, had plenty of fun with this game, and will probably jump back in during a dry season.

  • Sadly I can't help judging this game next to Diablo III, and next to that Torchlight II pales in comparison. It's a good game, but in the end I rather spend my time in Diablo when playing a game like this. Maybe one day I'll spend more time on this one when my enjoyment of Diablo wears thin.

  • The week following the release of Fez was very fun and interesting, and it felt like Internet tried to solve the game as a working community. Was very satisfying, but once you beat the game and its puzzles it was over. Not to mention that I had a ton of bugs when playing. Still, I highly recommend the game if you haven't played it yet.
