A bottle of wine, Oblivion and Tiger Woods

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: PC

Playing Oblivion again. It seems harder than I remember. A bottle of wine works fine with Oblivion and a few mods. I like the vanilla leveling system of Oblivion, so no mod there. I'm always looking for stuff to sell, and I like them gold coins, so bandits with high-end gear sounds good to me. My modding of Oblivion consists of the more cosmetic kind; textures, UI and some optimization.

When I met this dude in Cheydinhal, I knew I was home. I didn't remember him from my first play through roughly 5 years ago. Awesome.

      Oh yeah baby, I'm flyyin'.
 Oh yeah baby, I'm flyyin'. "Screenshot from my game."

I found a video, so I guess I missed this one. New to me in an old game. Loved it.

  Of course, I didn't punch the guy. I just enjoyed his music. Who knows, maybe we'll drink together one day.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters: Wii

It plays better than last year's version. I'm sore from moving muscles I haven't used in a while. I want to play more of my low-rez, very little texture, no grass golf game. I love my Wii again...for now.

Fore!...Thanks for reading. And wine goes great with both games. Wine on.

That video's not me. I found that. That's in-game.

As for TW on PS3 or Xbox 360, here it goes. Xbox 360 is with dual analog only. PS3 has Move support, but I don't have a PS3. From what I've read, the Move version has some work to do, especially with chipping. So the best motion version is still the Wii. And it is rock solid in that department.

@Claude: I love too see people still going back to play Oblivion. It's by far the game I've put the most hours into. Trust me, you don't want to know what that adds up to. I could have solved world hunger by now.

According to what mods you have running and the machine you run them on, Oblivion can look great. My machine ain't that great, but it serves me well.  This would be pretty high end. Edit, I like this one better.

Nice, I'll have to try Tiger on the Wii. And man, every time I see Oblivion, I wish that I never sold it to Gamestop for some quick cash. I was young and stupid back then.

The only people playing true vanilla Oblivion are console veterans. People playing it on the PC have internet access, usually, and access to mods. If not...they're mad.

I tried to get into Oblivion...i tried when it first came out during the Boer War and again last year on my ps3. Unfortunately the FPS dropped to something like 2fps on my ps3 where you meet Martin in the church. I'm sure i'll try again at some point with my new laptop, but Divinity 2 lets you turn into a dragon.

Mods or not, underneath it is still a 5 year old game running on an ancient Engine, and it can still look much better than a hell of a lot of modern games.

Great to hear it's better, continual improvements year upon year is what we want. What's new on the Wii version, does anything stand out as being particularly refreshing?

I'll look forward to your review, if you do one.

Oblivion is one of the games that I refuse to trade in because I know that every so often I'll go back and play it for a while.

My husband keeps telling me I should try to start liking wine.  It's what professionals drink.  Apparently I need to appreciate (or at least like) wine if I want to fit in with my coworkers.  I say eff that.

@melcene:

I'm usually a beer drinker, but for whatever reason when I play Oblivion, I get in the mood for wine. I think it's the setting and all the bottles of wine laying around.

@Contro:

Having the Masters helps a ton. But I must say the graphics, especially for Augusta, are rather lacking on the Wii. Augusta looks kind of bland, hardly any textures to speak of whatsoever. The azaleas look pretty and the lighting is pretty good. The first person view or "True View" has been tweaked for the Motion Plus. That's the part of love. The gameplay holds up very well and is slightly better than last year. People on the EA Forums are crying foul though. They took away some online features and people are pissed. I don't care about online that much, so it doesn't effect me. The game still has some bugs, but what are you gonna do.

If I had a PS3, I wouldn't mind giving the Move a go. Plus, it looks so much better on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Maybe next year.

Same old story as far as the textures, I remember bitching back in '07 about them... I really thought they would be up to scratch by now, if they aren't like you say on a big course like Augusta, thsn it can only be down to how much they can push on the system.

I'm tempted by them too, more so by the PS3 version though.

Whenever I install Oblivion, I usually just go crazy, install as many mods as possible, make it look super pretty and then play like 5 hours (after spending 6 searching around for mods) and call it good.

I try to go back and revisit this amazing game, but my 250+ hours of it previously has left me slightly burned out, but just reading what people are saying about the game makes me want to jump in again.

Skyrim is going to destroy my life though that's for sure.

From what I've read, the PS3 Move version works really well. The only complaint I've heard was the chipping could use some tweaking. It's weird, some of the courses on the Wii look great, but Augusta just looks flat. I played the Xbox 360 demo and Augusta looks really good on it. But yeah, even though the Wii game plays better than last year's, if I had a PS3, I would probably have bought that version.

I have Tiger 12 coming in the mail for PS3, I played it before buying it though.. and it worked awesome. I dunno who's saying there's work that needs to be done with chipping/putting.. I made some nice shots that felt fair. It's got a learning curve though.

@iam3green:

It's amazing the small things I forgot in Oblivion. I started doing the Mages Guild quests first, because I wanted to be a Mage this time around and you can loot the hell out of the Mages Guild. I had forgotted half the quests. I decided to not touch the main story and just make some money and be a bad ass Mage. I am looking forward to revisiting some of my favorite missions. Like that dude in the painting, the Dark Brotherhood quests, the Thieves Guild and so much more.

@wolf_blitzer85:

I put in over 300 hours into Oblivion in 06 and 07. That's not counting modding. I wasn't sure if I could get back into it again. What I did mod this time around was mostly to make the game look pretty. I didn't want to go crazy again. I think I had up to 40 or 50 mods running at one time in 07 before I got bored and deleted it.

What kind of wine?  Don't keep me hanging here.  Red wine is the best.  White is sulphurous muck not fit for baby goat.

EDIT:  Oops, the background picture of my profile has white (ish) wine, but I'm mixing it with pop so that doesn't count.

I couldn't pick up Oblivion again for the Xbox (115 hours on one character - DONE) but if I had a decent PC and Skyrim wasn't coming out later this year I would totally play it again.  Such a great game to just be in and have a great time, y'know what I mean?

It was a nice cheap red wine. Very dry and goes well with a well done Oblivion.

Yeah, you could do a lot with Oblivion on a decent PC. You could make it a totally different game if you know that I know that you know what I mean.

Oblivion is quite possibly my favorite game of all time and saying I'm floored for Skyrim is an understatement. I still have a powerhouse rig in my eyes even though it will be two years old in exactly one month. I plan on dropping around $500 in upgrades on my PC right before Skyrim comes out.
I've played Oblivion solely on Xbox 360. Even though I have a very capable rig I haven't bothered to pick it up on Steam. Sinking over 300 hours into the console version and then switching over to Skyrim will feel like a massive change.

I tried to get into Oblivion several times but couldn't, which seems strange to me because I loved Fallout, and by all accounts they're basically the same thing. In my experience, the only side quests really worth doing were the guild ones...and I hated the leveling system (I played on a console, no mods for me)...tell me, how do you play this game? Is there some key feature I'm missing, or is this just not for me?

I ask a similar thing about Fallout. I'm currently going through New Vegas now and while I'm enjoying it more than Fallout 3, it's certainly no Elder Scrolls experience. Everything is so dull and drab with a mash of grays for a color pallet. It just doesn't do it for me. Sometimes I feel like I only keep playing since I have some sense of obligation.

By the end of my first playthrough on the PC with Oblivion, I tried different styles leveling using mods. Choice.

I played Fallout 3 and it's nothing like Oblivion. I saw similarities in design, but Fallout 3 was a different animal coated on the same game engine as Oblivion.

Oblivion might not be for you. It's floaty and can be tedious, closing those fucking gates over and over and over during the main story for example. But yeah, the side quests, guild quests, so on and so forth, and but of course...Shivering Isles was fucking awesome.

If you play Oblivion, decide what type of character you want to be. If you like to shoot people in the face, you might want to be a big ass sword welding motherfucker of pain. Just saying.

What drew me into Fallout was the sidequests, each felt like a small mini-story to explore and they all seemed unique and believable, and fit into the world well. The world is kind of ugly, yeah, but I felt more of a sense of an actual world because each setting felt unique, not just another cave with essentially nothing in it.

@Claude:  I also noticed that there were these magical refill ruins throughout Cyrodiil that would help in that strategy. I made an orc in Morrowind with that birthsign and made him deliberately not a great caster, using that spell absorption power defensively to reduce the chance I'd get whomped on by mages. But I found that getting tons of spell points for free sort of demanded I get a spell complement to go along with that :)

Since you mentioned New Vegas, is there anything in that general RPG formula of New Vegas, as differentiated from Fallout 3, that you think might find a good home in a similar fantasy-themed RPG?
