Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine is certainly an MMO - Free to Play

Oh god, you guys. It was requested, so we did it. Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine. PerryVandell and I both went in for this one, as I brought in my bronze-age laptop in order for him to join me in the sordid universe of future-Japan.

So, how would you dudes envision an ideal SMT-styled MMO? I didn't think this was so hot, but I'm also not as familiar with the SMT universe as some of you guys probably are.

Standing and auto-attacking is not what you do in SMT:I. If you get hit, you're doing it wrong.

The game isn't quite good enough to bother with getting better at it though.

Someone has probably suggested this but you guys should try Lord of the Rings Online. I played it a long ass time ago but what I remember it was actually pretty fun, besides the fact that it's a complete WoW clone.

Well at least SMT: Imagine seems slightly better that Crimecraft but i don't think that's saying much. Also you guys should totally play Trickster Online for the funny potential, man i can't believe i actually played that once :/

@DanielComfort: I've heard the Marvel Super Hero squad is a pretty good F2P. Maybe check that out if you guys haven't crossed that off of your list yet?

@DanielComfort: If you're interested in doing non MMO free-to play games, I want to recommend you play WarRock. It's a Battlefield rip off, basically. I played a shit ton of it when it was in beta and I was a dumb kid who didn't know any better. I'm pretty sure it's terrible. I remember one of the biggest problems it had is that whenever two people would shoot at each other at roughly the same time, they would both die. You'd shoot each other to death at the same time. It would happen all the time. It was crazy janky like that. You should play it.

@RockmanBionics: Cait Sith has been the canonical spelling in the main SMT games and spinoffs for a while now. Not sure why that is; could have something to do with how the name is originally rendered in Japanese, but Atlus is usually good about getting the proper English name for demons and other various entities that have one. (Although it should be mentioned that Imagine was certainly not an Atlus USA localization for once, which might be for the best.)

@mutha3: I believe it's Cave who made the game, no? Guess they got bored porting their DoDonPachi games for the umpteenth time or something before they went back and made Death Smiles because why not?

......Huh. You're right. I always thought it was ariagames or something, but wikipedia agrees with you!

And seeing how SMT:Imagine turned out, we should be thankfull Cave's usually output is "shumps" rather than "Shin Megami Tensei".

@FluxWaveZ: Shiet. Yeah, we'll do Maple Story. Maybe for next week, actually. I don't think I could bring myself to do Runescape or Adventure Quest quite yet, however.

And, yeah, from the outside looking in, the combat in Imagine is actually pretty good for an MMO. In practice, it wasn't terrible, but everything else was so drab and boring that I couldn't stay interested.

@DanielComfort: Did you guys play Maple Story yet? If not, I'd enjoy seeing a video of that. Seeing one of Adventure Quest could also be fun.

I found Imagine to be interesting, but I got bored of it relatively quickly. I didn't find much to do and it was kind of slow paced. I enjoyed the combat, though.

@vexing: Yeah, as do I. Suggestions for more F2P stuff is always good, if you folks out there got any. Not that there will ever be an end to F2P stuff, but I'm always looking to throw shit on that list. Doesn't have to be an MMO necessarily, either.

Just free.

@Hector: If you're into playing PC games on a Mac, I strongly recommend Crossover Games. It makes games like SMT Imagine incredibly easy to install and play.

Cat Sith or Cat Sidhe is an actual mythological creature from celtic mythology that resembles a cat, that's how they got away with it.

Hm wait, they actually spell it Cait Sith? Then that's a little weirder I guess.

Good idea, bad execution.  Tried back when it was newer.  I think I got to like level 9 and just called it quits.

Someday, when this feature is all over, I'm going to go back and rewatch the lot of them, just to count how many times Perry's name is said. It makes me smile every single time. Hope you guys enjoy your next game far more than this one!

I have a lot of love for "Megaten" as its called but not because its good but because it was the first MMO I properly played and the first I played with a group of friends. I cant reccomend anyone play it but I want to go back to it at some point with those friends since we failed the skill system twice.

Its worth mentioning that Atlus isn't involved with making this thing at all! And though this MMO isn't very good, a lot of its elements(negotiation, weakness, demons etc,) are pulled straight from SMT.

@DanielComfort: I'm a huge SMT fan and I think this game really isn't very good at all. Its only saving grace is its music. Sort of.

I tried to get in this a while back but the game feels soo slugish. I might give it another try though it's a hassle getting it to run on a Mac.

The game disappointed me overall, but it's still cool to see that this actually exist. Seeing all the persona/demons from the SMT universe made it worth playing.
