Sticking with the Wii U this year.

I have cancelled my PlayStation 4 pre-order and decided to stick with the Wii U (and Vita) this year. Every game I want to play this fall is coming out on Wii U (and Vita). I am probably one of the few people on this site that still enjoys playing local muliplayer/ coop and at the moment Nintendo are some of the few still releasing these kinds of games. Of the games releasing this year nothing on Xbox One looked appealing and the only thing on PS4 that really had my attention is Knack but that game looks like it is going to drop like a rock in price by early next year at the latest. I'll still get a PS4 sometime next year because I love inFamous and I am also arguably the biggest PlayStation fan on the site, I just won't be getting one at launch.

So is anyone else skipping out on the PS4 and Xbox One this year because of the weak software? Is anyone else on this site really enjoying the Wii U? Anyone? Bueller?

Edit: This IGN article actually sums up my feelings better then I could articulate.

The line-up of 3rd party multiplatform games alone is already stronger on the new gen systems than on Wii U. It will most likely be the strongest launch line-up in history, on both PS4 and Xbox One - even disregarding the exclusives like Forza and Killzone.

Of course there's only so much time in the day, and if you'd rather spend yours on Wii U games, go ahead. I for one can't wait to ditch yesterday's tech for something better. Put an end to crummy downscaled software.

The sentiment that the launch line-up will be weak eludes me. Care to elaborate?

If you really believe that either system has a weak release line up then it would seem to me the smarter play would have been to wait on all platforms including WiiU.

Sticking with WiiU/3DS/PC this year. There is just nothing I want right way for Xbone/PS4. When I know the Kingdom Hearts 3, then I will make my decision.

The exclusive stuff, as I mentioned, seems meh and on the third party side all I really see are Watch Dogs, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, and Fifa. None of that has seems too interesting to me personally. Did I miss anything?

I already have a Wii U, and the stuff coming for it seem pretty great.

Launch games are notoriously lackluster but the PS4 lineup seems promising enough. You probably wont be missing out on much (except for the general excitement of picking up a new console).

Unfortunately I am not enjoying my WiiU that much, I had a lot of fun with Monster Hunter but other than that I haven't purchased a game for it since launch (which included Nintendo Land, ZombieU, NSMBU, and Scribblenauts). What are you playing and enjoying on the WiiU right now DarthOrange?

Sorry I just can't get over how you think that your the biggest Sony fan on Giant bomb. I mean isn't the fact you aren't getting a PS4 at launch, even though you could get one directly contradict that?

I know that isn't the point of this blog, but for some reason I just can't seem to get over it.

@citizencoffeecake:

NSMBU. Playing it with the Pro controller now that support was patched in and it is pretty great. I never finished it when I got it at launch and I want to do so before picking up the Luigi DLC. Also I've been working through a huge backlog of Wii games I never got the chance to play. I am like three worlds into Kirby's Epic Yarn.

I'll probably end up canceling my Xbox pre order if i don't see a must have. I mean Dead Rising 3 seems alright right? Battlefield 4? Killer Instinct?

Fuck it, you've opened my eyes. I will probably cancel it in the next few months. shit.

I guess Nintendo marketing money is going somewhere.

@darthorange: Okay, if we include Wii games I picked up Epic Yarn, Other M, Muramasa, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 (and some others). There are a nice collection of Wii games I missed out on.

Still keeping my PS4 preorder though.

You name another user on this site who has written as passionate PlayStation related blogsasme and also tried to convince the community that the PSP Go was great.

Hate to say it @darthorange, but I think this dude definitely has you beat in terms of Playstation fandom

http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/hebrewhammer/blog/from-polygon-ban-to-giant-bomb-fan/101319/#comments-block

I mean crap, the guy was a contestant on the Tester and he got banned from Polygon for being so zealously pro-playstation. That's pretty hardcore. Unlike you (to your credit and to his discredit) he is so far down the Sony fanboy rabbit hole that he sounds like a cultist.

as for new consoles I'm holding off due to financial reasons. I could, but I don't think that's in my best interests to buy one given my immediate financial obligations.

But really launch lineups are usually kinda weak by their very nature. I've bought several consoles Day 1 in the past and it always seems like 1-2 months I've burned through the launch titles I acquire and am bored for several months. There's only so much Wii Sports, Excite Truck and Dynasty Warriors 2 etc. a guy can play.

So I've loaded up on Steam/GOG sales and some PS3 titles in my semi-annual splurge and that should last me probably until winter or perhaps even longer. My backlog is crazy huge again.

re: WiiU- I want to like it but I find the controller annoyingly large the little I've used. it Maybe I'll give it another chance after I burn through my enormous new stack of games.

@darthorange:

Personally - Battlefield 4 is all the launch day games I need. It'll run better than on my PC, and it won't be a grungy downscaled version like for current gen systems. Especially looking forward to playing it in a closed online evironment - I'll love the absence of cheaters and the level playingfield - it'll be pure bliss. Just like Need for Speed Rivals, which will be pure arcade racing joy and come out within weeks of launch.

That aside, there's also a bunch of free 2 play games to consider, most of which are launch day titles. Warframe, DC Universe Online, Planetside 2, Blacklight Retribution - I'm sure there's even more. Lots of stuff to try out. Planetside 2 especially might be amazing on consoles.

Of course there's no accounting for taste. I for one find that Battlefield 4 & Watch_Dogs & Black Flag & the other multiplatform launch titles make for a crazy good line-up of games. Some exclusives, like Killzone Shadowfall look great too. So that's where I'm coming from.

I guess if these games don't speak to your tastes, then by all means don't buy the console at launch - just don't say it's because of a weak line-up like that's a fact. It's a weak line-up according to you and your tastes. Outside of personal preferences not aligning with what's going to be on offer, it's definitely a very strong launch line-up.

Nintendo's WiiU lineup over the next 6 months is looking pretty strong, I think. I'm totally hyped for the Xbone and PS4 systems themselves, but I'll definitely be holding off (at least until InFamous Second Son launches), there's nothing at launch that I'm dying to play. I feel like I'll have plenty to play between the WiiU, 3DS/Vita and current gen consoles, even while avoiding the games that are cross-gen so I can pick up the superior versions at a later date.

inFamous really is the "I'll wait for Pikmin 3" of the PS4 it seems. Everything else can be played on existing systems or doesn't look that interesting to me.

I think we've all had our fun laughing at Wii U for the last 10 or so months but now it's time to acknowledge that there is awesome stuff on the horizon. Just because it's not 1:1 the same as with the other consoles doesn't make it any weaker, especially since the first party titles always make up for it.

So is anyone else skipping out on the PS4 and Xbox One this year because of the week software? Is anyone else on this site really enjoying the Wii U? Anyone? Bueller?

If you think that lineup is weak why did you even buy a Wii U already? Sorry it is your opinion but it doesn't make any sense.

Because he feels the Nintendo line-up was much better than the others?

Seems fair to me, and I can't blame him. Game I got most hyped up over was Super Smash Bros and Bayonetta 2. XBone had interesting picks, but too bad I refuse to pick up GreedBoxOne.

I'm not particularly interested in anything that comes out around launch either so I'll probably wait as well. Only WiiU game I'm interested in that comes out this year is 3D World, but that's alright, I've got plenty of other stuff to play.

Nope. I'm going to finally get a launch console on day one, for once. ( I was a few months late on PS3 grrr) I won't be able to act like it doesn't bother me that I don't have a shiny new device hooked up and ripping through at least 1 new title at launch. Unless Sony reports of their pre launch units catching fire during production, I'll be getting a PS4.

He said he'd be sticking with it instead of getting the new next gens.

In the PS4, One, and Wii U battle, TC will be sticking with Wii U because he was not impressed by the others, meaning he prefers and will stay with Wii U.

Makes sense to me.

I get that. But what I do not get is why did he even bought a Wii U to begin with? Was he uninformed? Did he get one for free? Because the current Wii U lineup is weaker than the PS4/720 line up right now.

I feel you. I'm still getting one at launch but if nothing interests you then I would cancel my pre-order to. Thing is there will be a bunch of indie games that have not been announced also launching with the system. Those will tide me over until the second launch starts.

@darthorange: I actually like my WiiU and wish there were more content on it other than buying Virtual Arcade games... again. Pre-ordered the PS4 and getting that.

I'm holding off on the XboxOne, not because of the, ya know... stuff. Just because I can't afford to get both the PS4 and XboxOne this year, and I happen to care more about Sony's exclusives.

@darji: "B class Mario game." And that's where I'm done discussing things with you.

Honestly, some people love Nintendo for that. For the useage of old characters. I thought Zombi U, Super Mario Land, Nintendoland, Monster Hunter especially, and Scribblenauts were all great games, and it seems the line up will only get better.

If you don't like those games, whatever. That's fine. You can at least respect it though.

I am sorry but what else should I call it that? It was a very easy cash in nothing else. Galaxy at least was a true A Game Mario game because they tried something new and interesting Mario Brothers Wii U felt like they had nothing else for Launch so they were just shitting out another Mario game.

Same with Mario 3d World. It looks like it was made for the 3DS before but then Nintendo thought. Oh shit we do not have a Mario game for the Wii U this year as well so lets switch the platforms and give him a cat Suit.

At least Activision tries to make a different COD every year while Nintendo does not even can do that anymore.

I've seriously been thinking of cancelling my preorder over the last week or so. There was nothing announced in the launch line up that's a system seller for me, and there's a handful of games coming out on current consoles next year that I want to play. $399 isn't going to mean the mortgage doesn't get paid or anything drastic, it just seems like it might be kind of a waste on something that won't get much use for a year or so.

I'm not going to cancel my PS4 pre-order (Had enough trouble pre-ordering one is it is), but yeah, I agree that in the upcoming year I'll probably have more fun with my WiiU than with the PS4 exclusive-wise.

Also, glad to see that you are acting the same no matter the site you are on, Darj.

I'm trying to stick with the Wii U simply because it's something More than myself uses on a semi-regular basis. I think I last booted up my Wii U to buy/play Super Metroid. But, I'm awaiting bayonetta 2 and Rayman Legends (WHICH I SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEATEN BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO).

The more I think about it, the more apt that is. He's like Jay, but more hardcore.

To stay on topic, I'm getting a PS4 at launch, though I'm not expecting much out of it in the first year. Like the Wii U, the best games people are going to really want won't be coming until well after the system is released. Good thing that there are plenty of Wii U games coming down the pipe in the meantime.

IT is not that I hate Nintendo but rather criticize them while other people are still blinded by nostalgia. People always talk about how COD or Assassins Creed is always the same game but if Nintendo does it they get mostly a pass from these people? Why? Because they are blinded by nostalgia.

And again I am sorry if I expect a bit more from Nintendo than the same game over and over again without even putting some effort into these games. Their new Mario game could have been something big like Galaxy was but no now we are getting a game named basically after a 3DS game. A smash brothers that also will work on a 3DS and a studio like Retro has been wasted by making another 2D Donkey Kong.

Sorry that I am not really excited about all this.

@darji: Sequel fatigue and lack of new ideas is a problem that the entire industry shares, but you only bring it up when it concerns Nintendo. A little consistency expressing your disappointment would go a long way.

My big question is when X, Fire Emblem X SMT, and Bayonetta 2 are released (which granted, could still be several years away) are you going to get on board the Wii U train?

Of course the whole industry share it but that does not mean Nintendo should get a pass because of that. As I said the yearly COD game has more changes than recent Mario games and that is really telling in my opinion.

AS for the rest: I was never a fan of Bayonetta so no and for the other game. I like fire emblem but I do not like SMT I am more a Persona guy in terms of mechanics and setting. Also again these are not games that will save the Wii U in any way. They are niche titles.

@darji: COD has more chances to what? And how is it worth comparing COD to Mario? At what point will your bile make sense?

Sorry I meant changes not chances. And I compared them because of milking franchises

@darji: Still not comparable. Which Mario games? NSMB? Galaxy? 3D Land/World? The Super Mario series has seen quite a bit of variety in the past decade.

I said the last Mario games Like Super Mario Brothers Wii and Wii U or the DS version. Or even compare 3D land with 3D world. you can clearly see the resemblance there. Galaxy was the last great project and Galaxy 2 looked like an addon for this game.

@darji: And in what ways has COD changed in comparison to the NSMB series? (This should be good.)

Settings, Black ops 2 changed quite some stuff. It is still a COD game but they put more effort in this than Nitnendo did with their Mario games. Also they are still very story driven so they have always a different story. Mario games are always the same.

@darji: Maybe you should just accept that some people have more fun playing a Mario game than a CoD game? I'll play another damn Mario game any day, but Calla Duty just kinda bores me. That's not a knock to anyone who enjoys them. They're just not for me.

I'm surprised his answer wasn't "Over time and as the game evolved, you shoot enemies with more feeling". :)

On a serious note, one thing I do see in common between Mario and CoD is their fans jumping through more and more intricate, ridiculous, and illogical hoops to basically say "I like it".

@darthorange: I sort of agree with you. I'm definitely picking up a Wii U when Pikmin comes out next month, and then Mario 3D World, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong, and Wind Waker should keep me going for the rest of the year. I'm not really sold on the PS4 or the Xbone as far as launch lineup goes though. Destiny looks cool I guess, but that's on current gen anyway.

General rule of thumb says you should never buy a console at launch. Wii U is also getting some games I'm pretty interested in this fall. Probably gonna be getting a Wii U soon.

It is more change than a Mario game did in the last years. Again these are different genre so change is different. I am not even a COD player so I can not say what mechanically all changed but just by the look of it I can see clearly a change from Black Ops to Black Ops 2 or Modern Warfare 2 to 3.

However I can not see any change from Mario Brothers Wii and Wii U or from 3D mario land to 3D Mario world except local (LOL) multiplayer. Or the changes from the last 2D Donkey to the next one. Hell I even can see a lot of changes from Rayman Origins to the new Rayman game.
