The only reason I think that it still has mass market appeal is because of how easy it is to button mash your way to victory, so it really caters to the casual fighting game fans who just want to feel like they are actually stringing intelligent combos together.

I had a similar reaction when I was discussing comedies and had to explain to two people who Monty Python was.

I don't know why people expect the existing fighting game franchises to be the ones that innovate the genre. It would have to be a new IP for that.
