Greatest Nintendo Games

Couple of notable omissions: Donkey Kong Country, any Mario Kart, the original Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy and all Zelda games not on the list. I love these games, but wanted to keep the list to 10.

List items

  • Hands down the greatest Nintendo game of all-time. The story is fantastic, the combat system was smooth and easy. The characters are deep and fascinating. It's still beautiful to look at. Moving through time wasn't a gimmick, it was practical. Link's first 3D adventure remains his best.

  • Addictive gameplay. Great story, excellent atmosphere, beautful music. This game had everything. This game is the pinnacle of 2D gaming.

  • Melee took the first game's great concept and made it ten times better. The maps paid homage to Nintendo's history. The music is beautiful. But the real star of the game remains the combat system. Simple, yet deep and addictive. With a large cast of characters and the new single player mode, one could never spend enough time with this game.

  • No Mario until number 4? This is not a reflection on Mario. This game looks beautiful and plays beautiful. It was challenging and it was fun. And who could forget Racoon Mario?

  • Mario's first 3D adventure still stands tall. Gorgeous and deep, 64 posed a challenge to everyone. It wasn't enough to beat the game, I had a mad compulsion to collect every star. The challenges were unique and provided enough variety to practice religiously without getting stale. Super Mario 64 still schools platformers.

  • Plays like Ocarina of Time but with a wolf. Visually stunning and beautifully scored, Twilight Princess gave the Wii the kick it needed. The final boss fight remains one of the greatest in Nintendo history.

  • People were terrified when Nintendo handed off the reigns of the series to the Austin based Retro Studios. People were terrified when the next Metroid was announced to be making the transiton to 3D. All unjustified. The gameplay was flawless. The visuals are brilliant. The story felt like Metroid should.

  • Developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. One of the greatest First Person Shooters of all-time had to make the list.

  • Maybe the surprise of the list. Simple, yet deep and infintely difficult, Advance Wars remains one of the best turn based strategy games in history. It didn't even skimp on the story or the characters, both which were funny and engaging.

  • Despite borrowing a page from Advance Wars, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn didn't get the attention it deserved. With a huge cast of characters, it would've been easy to get lost. Yet each person had a unique personality. Not as difficult and with a few more rough edges than Advance Wars, it made up with for those shortcomings with a better story.
