Sending in my XBOX to Microsoft for repairs gone horribly wrong

So, fuck. The eject button on my 360 is broken, so I had to send it in for repairs. I had called up customer support last night, and was helped by a friendly Dutch employee. Things were going more smoothly than I had expected them to; customer support was more of a pain to navigate back when my Box red-lighted on me.

But today, I get home from school, and I hear that a UPS dude has already come by to pick the damn thing up. It's nice that they're moving so fast now, but my dad... forgot to take off the harddrive and to take out the game inside, FIFA 10.

It sucks. I don't blame my old man, of course; he knows next to nothing about consoles or electronics in general, and the HDD is integrated into the XBOX's design in such a way that it's hard to think off it as something that can be taken off if you don't know what it is. The eject button is also broken, so he couldn't have easily checked whether or not the drive still had something inside. It's not his fault at all. And yet, I still feel frustrated. Given the precedent set by UPS (it took like a week last time for a dude to come and pick it up) there was no reason to expect this to happen.

So what will come of this? Well, I'll definitely lose my FIFA disc. Assuming it doesn't break outright during transport (and it probably will), I expect the engineers will simply toss it once they open up the drive and find a disc in there. The harddrive could potentially get back here, but I expect it to be wiped in such a case. And god, if my Box shows up here without a fucking harddrive on it, I will call up Microsoft and yell at them until they give me a new 60GB harddrive.

Agh! Fate hates me, it seems. No one is to blame in this. Not Microsoft, because they repeatedly tell you to take off the harddrive. Not my father, because there was no know he could have known. And not me, because I couldn't have known either. But fuck, it happened.

Eh, guess I'll have to shell out for a new disc. And transfer all my licenses and crap to a new or wiped harddrive.

*Is annoyed.*

Life's a bitch sometimes, you just got to suck it up and die a little inside everytime you do.

Dude, that sucks.
Hope everything works out for ya.

I wouldn't be surprised if both things were returned to you relatively unharmed. Just don't tie yourself into knots over it.

If your dad doesnt know anything about electronics, why would you even have him be the one to pack up the 360 for pick up?  Why didn't you take off the HDD?  Or the disc and just leave the boxed up 360 ready for him to just give to the sexy UPS man?
Hope your HDD is never returned and you get Barbie's Horse Adventures in return just to teach you a lesson.

How was I supposed to know that the UPS dude was going to come by at the time?! I had not made any appointment, and the guy on the phone had made no mention of it either. He told me that he was going to send in a label, and that I would then be able to call up UPS and arrange a time of pick-up. But all of a sudden, the courier stops at our door while I'm out and my dad, being the only one who was at home at the time, unplugged the 360 and handed it over.

@Video_Game_King:
It's not UPS' fault. They sent a courier at the wrong time, and my dad unknowingly made a mistake. It's just frustrating that it went down this way.

I forgot to take out my skate copy, did not get it back :/

@dudacles: lol, guess I hit a nerve son.  Question is why would you still have a busted 360 plugged in and not have had it in the box?  How did the UPS guy just grab it and not take it in a box first?  Seems suspicious.  Think your dad just sold it for coke or the UPS just ripped off your dad thinking this guy doesn't know shit.

@Video_Game_King: Yeah, looks like the OP made a few mistakes in this case.

@dudacles:   Man, that sucks.  Hopefully it'll work-out for the best and you get your game back and all your data.

I guess all I can say is that hopefully with the next generaitons of consoles, we'll have cloud storage for all of our saved games.  That's what I'm really hoping for... every single thing you do gets saved on Microsoft's Servers, instead of our local hard drive.

Well, that's a bummer. I would call/e-mail MS to see if they can do anything about it. It is worth a shot.

Sent a laptop in for repair one time and left a disc in.  they sent it back with the laptop, that was HP.

Dude, what are you even saying?

I still had my 360 plugged in because it still works; the eject button is simply busted. I can even still open the drive if I boot up the dashboard and use the X button, but it's still within warranty, and I prefer having a 360 that fully works. I had played a game of FIFA 10 last night, thinking that I would simply be able to make an appointment with UPS when I had acquired a label. This was a mistake, perhaps, but it's a human error that's easy to make.

I got my Gears back even though it was inside the console when i send it to repair. But i think i got it back because i informed them that it's there.

Man that sucks. I would totally be frustrated on my end if that happened.

And how did you go about doing so? If making sure that my stuff will be returned boils down to calling them and informing them then I'll do that, of course.

That sucks man. I has MS refuse to repair my first box (even though I paid up front) because UPS dropped it and cracked the plastic. MS just shipped it back in the same box with a letter that didn't tell me why. I had to call them for them to tell me it was because it looked "tampered with". I ended up having to buy a new box because they're dickfuckwads for not sending me a padded "coffin" to ship my box in like they used to. Cocksuckers.

Dude you should have filed a claim with UPS. I had a similar issue and they were pretty good about it.

i think if you contact them before they receive the hardware or go online and leave some info on your service ticket letting them know that you want your hardrive back they will understand the mix up. aswell if you let them know that the cd is trapped in it because of the bad eject button they will return it to you cause you couldnt get it out before you shipped. my advice is to call microsoft and have them update your service ticket so the technicial will know of the issues and if they still dont help you after they put a note on your ticket its there fault for not paying attention to your request and you can contact them again.

really microsofts biggest problem is there service techs are retarded and dont look up the information for the hardware they get and just throw it onto a pile as soon as they open the box. thats why so many xboxes that are sent in for rrod and dont have it are still replaced because the techs are lazy and dont check the hardware before they just throw it away.

you should have probably taken the disc and HDD off yourself.

@MrKlorox:  sorry for double posting but you should have filed with UPS for that shit. they are responsible for the break and should replace it. next time immediately report it with UPS and they will replace it or give you the value of what was broken right away. they will do it quickly for smaller stuff because they want to look good on paper and have no outstanding issues with delivery fuck ups or broken shipments.

I sent mine through the post office and now I have no idea where it is....

Posted by PNut_Buttr_Panda

dont you still get a box from microsoft if you specifically ask for it.  last time i had to deal with them they wanted to email me a stupid printing label and i told them i didnt have a printer and needed them to mail me what i needed. so they sent me the label in a box.

Posted by agentboolen
@dudacles:  I would give them a call, they might keep a look out and send it back to you with your replacement system.  I know there is a chance that they wont be this helpful but shit a new 60gb drive is $100.  Hope it turns out good in the end.

Wow. Sounds like a lot of people lost discs during that kind of process. I mean if the eject button doesn't work then there's no way to get the disc out. Microsoft should at least be nice enough to ship what you bought back to you.

It was nearly a year ago and when I gave it to my friend to send for me, I said to be sure and insure it. That never happened and I was sure to curse that person for it. I didn't think I had any grounds to complain since it wasn't insured.

Posted by iam3green

call up microsoft give them ur repiar number thing and tell them that u couldn't get the fifa game out and hard drive. i'm sure they will take care of getting the hard drive and game. if not then u are out of luck. only thing i would say.

Posted by Fierrze
@dudacles: Yup, But i told them so before i sent it to repairs so that might be little diffrent. You should try calling them tho.

My friend left a copy of Gears 2 when he sent his off, he got it back in a plastic sleeve when he got his Xbox back. You could get lucky.

Posted by BenX02

When I had to send mine in, they kept emphasizing how important it was that I took out the hardrive and discs. I hope it works out for you, but I heard they'll just throw out harddrives that are still attached.

Hopefully I'm wrong, let us know how it goes.

I would've made my dad buy a new HDD if it didn't return.

Posted by Dudacles

Well, according to the tracking feature on xbox.com, my XBOX is on its way back already. I guess I'll have found out about the fate of my HDD by the end of the week.

I'm sorry

You dont need to transfer licenses for xbox marketplace stuff from hdd to hdd its a console thing and im pretty sure if they need to send you a new console they transfer the licenses for you.

Actually my friend had to send his Xbox in for repairs and he forgot to take off the hard drive and he had a disc inside as well. The strange thing was that his hard drive and disc were returned with a the Xbox. Don't give up hope just yet.

One other thing I was thinking: say if you didn't have the New Xbox Experience, how would you eject a disc with a broken eject button?

You'd have to take off the face-plate and put a bobby-pin or something of that nature into the tiny hole underneath the drive. It forces the drive to open mechanically, allowing you to take the disc out.
Posted by darksan00

you should've done that from the beginning. Right now you should contact them first.

My XBOX is back from Germany. The HDD is in there, with all the data intact, and the FIFA 10 disc was inside the box as well, neatly put into a paper wrap. I am very pleased. Guess I overreacted. :p

Glad to hear. I've heard too many stories of people losing games and HD data!

Unlucky dude, I hope you get that hard-drive back okay.
