Top 10 Games of 2016

It's probably about time I did one of these, while I didn't quite get as much gaming time in this year as I'd like there's still a few select choices I'd like to give some recognition.

Games I wish I'd played more of:

DOOM

I'm nearly two hours in and this has been an absolute joy to play. It feels and sounds brutal and fantastic and I can't wait to see what else it has to offer.

Hitman

I'd fallen out of love with Hitman for a long time and picked this up having seen the GB crew having a ball with it. I've only purchased the first map but found myself experimenting with everything it has to offer already. Again, can't wait to see what else is in store!

Some games I'll hopefully get to in 2017:

List items

  • Time Commanders aired on BBC in 2003, and since then I've wanted a marrying of Games Workshop and Total War. To my delight, 2016 finally delivered and more importantly it disappointed me in the slightest.

There's plenty of (slightly pricey) DLC still yet to churn through, but I'm 120 hours in and still wanting more.

  • One of the most tight and fun multiplayer shooters I've had the pleasure of playing since the original Modern Warfare. The regular addition of new heroes and maps will keep me coming back for a long time to come.

  • Having loved XCOM 1 I always knew I was going to have a good time with this, but I was taken aback by how much better it was. Lots of added variety, interesting missions and choices to make - there was clear inspiration in here from the board game.

  • The cute characters and simple looking mechanics really fooled me into thinking this game would be a laid back and calm ride. Each level is its own little puzzle that you have to figure out as a team and execute to perfection.

The best couch coop game I've played in a long time, possibly ever!

  • I'm aware this wasn't out in 2016, but it's one I've returned to time and time again to check in on the frequent updates and to scratch my rat slaying itch.

  • I really didn't think I'd be coming back after last time, but it happened again. Blizzard simply had too much on offer here to ignore and I'm really glad I didn't.

  • This game is an experience, just being in a field watching and listening to everything going on around you is cinematic and intense. Nobody does large scale war and squadding up with friends better than Battlefield.

  • Make no mistake, this game is brutal. Codemasters have gone further down the simulation path and it makes for a nail biting, edge of your seat experience.

  • A bullet hell rogue-like? On paper this generally wouldn't be my kind of game, but I found myself and my other half coming back to it over and over to try and delve slightly further into the Gungeon together.

  • A game I'll return to in bursts, time and time again. Heading to Cologne to watch this played live, in an arena, drinking beer and cheering a bunch of Ukrainian e-sport pros on is an experience I won't soon forget.
