There are quite a few. The first time one of The Many sneaks up behind you in System Shock Two and shouts "Look out!" or "Kill me!" is pretty bad. That game probably qualifies for creepiest, scariest and most disturbing thing in a game multiple times, a true horror classic.

Setting a zombie on fire in Half Life 2 is quite disturbing because its pretty obvious the person who has been infected is still alive enough to feel pain.

The Oceanside Hotel in Bloodlines is pretty scary as is Shalebridge Cradle in Thief 3.

Charles Barkley: Shut up and Jam Gaiden is all you need in this context. A free comedy RPG with a genuinely decent battle system. Its hilarious, fun and free so I wholeheartedly recommend this game.

Until its on GOG (which I hope it does soon) System Shock 2 is abandonware and is thus free. Also its fucking amazing.

NeoGaf  is terrible, they are full of some of the worst elitist gamers on the internet, which is really saying something. Their registration system is completely indicative of this. You are better off not being registered for that cess pool unless its to do some trolling or to see how fucking terrible a community it is.

@Southgrove:  You said you played Baldurs Gate but did you play the sequel its and its expansion (quasi sequel really) they are probably the best gaming I've ever had. Freespace 2 is amazing and availiable on GOG it also has a huge group of people working on its source code too improve the graphics and such. Also how am I the first to Deus Ex, am I that old...

All in all the PC probably has the best selection of games out of any platform and unless you have Vista everything should be reasonably easy to get working especially with something like DOS box. I could honest reccomend games all night for the PC.

Reading is always really helpful but even better again is listening to audio books as I always find sitting up and reading can keep me from getting tired. Most audiobooks are read by someone with a deep voice at a fairly leisurely pace. Other than that I like listening to a late night talk radio and music show here that seems specifically tailored to make you sleep. However assuming you're in America the time difference probably means its on at a time not conducive to sleeping!

http://actionbutton.net/ is the worst video game review site on the internet bar none. They give retarded scores that have a schizophrenic reasoning behind them, also that site was founded by Tim Rogers. A pseudo-intellectual, Japanophile twat who is one of the guiding lights in "new games journalism". There is nothing on the internet worse than these reviews, the 4,000 word GTA IV review is particularly indicative of the kind of wank these people are putting out.

The scandalous shenanigans that went down at Gamespot are one thing but at least they are able to write a review that doesn't read like a precocious middle schooler  trying to be edgy. Scores are a bad idea though, you should read the review to get a feel for the game just as long as its not some gargantuan essay about the artistic status of the game or other pointless snobbery.

Planescape has a great story and writing but its combat is absolutely horrible and the exact opposite of what the OP said he likes. I'd second the Fallouts, The Witcher and the Elder Scrolls games. As someone said any Diablo-a-likes would just be a dissapointment since none of them are as good as Diablo at all.
