Very much so. Official console mags with demo disks I can do without in retrospect, but I miss certainly some of the more personality-driven mags, particularly when that was where you got the best information. These days, even with some of the higher profile stuff like Edge and GamesTM, I find myself just generally skimming it rather than really absorbing the content.

@syed117: Yes, but my point was people like Steam because the pricing is flexible, the servers are fast, the catalogue is easily searchable and it doesn't show adverts despite a premium subscription. Xbox Live isn't that right now.

Microsoft is definitely to blame but so are gamers and the games "press"

The reactions people were having were ridiculous. The few people who argued for a digital system were drowned out by all the people screaming their heads off.

Everyone is quick to reference steam now, but where were those people a few months ago when all this was happening?

People tend to be hypocrites and sony absolutely capitalized on Microsoft stumbling to find the right message. It's doesnt actually surprise me considering what both Microsoft and Sony have done as far as platforms. Sony platforms have always had great games, but they've never done anything to push the way we play. The PS4 is no different. Frankly they don't have the resources to take chances after the whole cell processor fiasco. Microsoft tried to use brute force and they failed.

I hope Microsoft figures out a way to bring some of that functionality back. I don't want to spend anther generation doing what we did during the last one. Hopefully some of this cloud stuff they are pushing will pay off in a big way. They have to be the ones to do it. Sony can't.

No, that actually happened. I saw many a Google+ comment with some guy going "I don't see how this is any different from Steam" to which point I wanted to hang myself rather than type out another lengthy comparison.

Admittedly, I think a lot of the vitriol directed at Microsoft's original plan was by cynical people who had trouble with the idea that distribution through Xbox Live would be any better than it is now (myself included). Maybe it would have been awesome. I guess we'll not know for another five years.

By "games", I assume you mean sex simulators, in which case I'd want better graphics. Anything with vaguely realistic AI wouldn't go to bed with me.

Honorable Mention

My Favorite Best Dressed Video Game Character

I really like the way Alan Wake looks, NO ELSE in video games can pull of a zip up black hoodie WITH a Tweed Blazer WITH FUCKING Elbow PATCHES

Alan Wake from Alan Wake
Alan Wake from Alan Wake

But J Allard could probably pull that off in real life, which is arguably more important.

Well the Sinclair Spectrum got me my first job in the industry, but I think the C64 was where everything just clicked for me.

ZX Spectrum, which my parents bought second-hand from one of my neighbours. I had a Videopac (Magnavox Odyssey) before that, but it was the Spectrum that really got me into it for whatever reason.

I assume you guys are from the UK? :)

I was first introduced to gaming via this beauty:

An Amstrad CPC 464, Green Screen. Whilst the Speccy and C64 war was raging in the UK, ther were some of us who made do with this thing. Despite it's limitations, (it had less software that Speccy, and less power than C64 - though this a very reductive argument), it opened up a new world for me I never new existed, and videogames have been a importnat part of my life ever since.

It's why I still, to this day, cannot completely and unreservedly hate this man:

I vaguely remember that! One of my friends in school had one (in colour), which remains ingrained in my memory because I remember the weird way the arrow keys were laid out.

Sugar should probably go down in history for that "pregnant calculator" quote alone.

ARMAGEDDON IS NIGH.

Okay, so we're just having a thunderstorm. But it's the first time in days I've been able to shut the windows. It's wonderful.
