Why so Serious ?

The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight
So last night me and a bunch of my friends went into Glasgow to see the new Batman movie The Dark Knight staring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger.

We nearly never got to see the movie as because its not long released on the big screen here in the UK every showing of it was fully booked and we had to book tickets online.  My mate Shaun's girlfriend, Debbie, booked the tickets and then lost her bank card which you need to get the tickets once you get to the cinema, so we had to stand for about 30 minutes waiting on them trying to get into the computer to refund those tickets and then sell us the 5 tickets that we had previously bought so we could just pay for them then and there.  It was a nightmare but we got to the 8pm showing of it and managed to see it.

Now I've never really been into comic books and stuff like that and I've never actually seen any of the other Batman movies to my knowledge, the only Batman I've seen before was the animated cartoon series that used to be shown on TV years ago.  So I went into see it on like a completely blank slate, all I knew was that Batman was in it and the Joker was in it.

The movie was really good.  As you watch the movie the whole struggle of good vs. evil plays out between Batman, the Joker, Harvey Dent and Lt. Gordon.  The story is really believable, like I said I've never seen any of the previous Batman movies, just the cartoon so I thought it'd be like watching a comic book but its really believable and realistic.  Really, really dark too.  I was really surprised that here in the UK that movie was a 12A because I think if I was 12 the Joker would scare the ever loving shit out of me.

The acting was really good, specially from Heath Ledger.  My friends were all in agreement that even though they had previously thought Jack Nicholson was the best Joker, Ledgers portrayal of him was spot on and it really stole the show.  I can see why the Academy Awards are preparing to gift him with a posthumous award for it.  It was really believable and by far the best character in the movie.  The scene right at the beginning when he's talking to all the mob guys and he did the disappearing pencil trick, I almost burst a side laughing it was so funny the way he did it.

The casting overall was spot on I thought.  Michael Caine as Alfred the butler was awesome as he suits that role down to the ground,  Morgan Freeman as the Batman equivalent of Q from the James Bond movies was also a great choice.  I liked the guy who played Lt. James Gordan, Gary Oldman, although I got him totally mixed up with the guy who played one of the Flight Instructors in Top Gun.  Aaron Eckhart does a great job as Harvey Dent as well, I swear he looks a bit like Sean Bean though.

The special effects were awesome, lots of things blowing up, a great car chase scene, as well as some really good CGI, well I assume its CGI, towards the end of the movie but I won't get into that too much as it'll give too much of the story away.  Its probably common knowledge to any Batman fan but if your like ignorant to a lot of the back story of these characters like me it came as a total surprise to me.

One thing I will point out though. I LOVE the Bat-bike.  American Chopper eat your heart out!  I so want one of those.

So yeah I HIGHLY recommend this movie.  If you haven't seen it go now.  Buyer beware though, the movie is 2 and a half hours long so go to the bathroom BEFORE it starts and don't do what I did, sit for the last hour dying for the bathroom as I'd drank about a gallon of Sprite, not wanting to move because your totally engrossed in the story.  You get fooled into thinking the movies about to end about half way though it as well and then its takes a U-turn and goes away into something else, or at least I got fooled by this, but yeah its still a really good movie and one you really have to see.
