"In gaming, we are all trained from birth to root for the underdog ... We root for him because the odds are so incredibly against him ... We root for him because he is insignificant, because there is no way he will succeed unless we believe he will succeed. He's the underdog. Activision is a multi-billion dollar corporation with a string of hit franchises, global success, and market leadership. That does not sound anything like an underdog to me." So says Activision's Dan Amrich, in an interview with Games Radar. I want to draw your attention to the brazen gloating at the end of this quote. It's not their fault that everyone hates them; it's just that they're so large and everyone hates large companies. He's got a point here: I know lot's of people who despise Valve because of their huge market share on the PC downloadable front. Oh wait, no I don't...
It can't be the corporate culture that tries to milk it's customers for every penny they can in the name of profits either. After all, people are buying your stuff in the millions so they must be happy right?
How about the emphasis on shipping franchises over respecting development teams? Laying off hundreds of workers because you couldn't manage your properties well can't be the reason.
Bobby Kotick's ugly mug smiling at us while telling us that he'd charge us more money for games if he could can't be the reason.
Blizzard's radical change in corporate philosophy after the Activision/Blizzard merger can't be the reason.
$15 map-pack price gouging can't be the reason.
It's certainly not the fact that you're constantly reminding us that we're "wrong" and that you're actually a bunch of really nice guys if we just think about it hard enough.
Yep, it's definitely the gamers who are to blame for automatically hating large companies. Well played.
