I Want to Get the Ape Out 0

Incredible style that captures your attention instantly. The sound design is awesome, with drum-heavy jazz compositions that reflect the happenings on screen and draw you in further. The visual style too is unique and beautiful. This is truly a labor of love.A very intense experience that will have you on the edge of your seat as you work your way thru the levels. The duration of the game depends largely on your skill level as you will have to clear some challenging scenarios. I wish there were ...

Sha-DOH of the Tomb Raider 0

Finally wrapping this series up. This game feels like a step backwards, with too much focus on big glamourous stuff and new systems and not enough on simply structuring the gameplay experience to be fun and interesting. Take note that this is one of the most expensive games ever made, costing $100M to produce.Systems are added to the Rise formula that don't enhance the game meaningfully. That's fine, games always do that. The bigger issue is the pacing. The game is just not storyboarded correctl...

Goofball City 0

What a funny little game. I love it. This is in many ways the polar opposite to Gorogoa, which is very stern and serious and lacks characters altogether while still establishing character thru setting. That said, the games both build worlds that feel "lived in" and contribute deeply to your enjoyment of the fiction. The handful of puzzles here are very simple but fun to complete. You play as a hole that needs to consume everything on the map. You get bigger as you consume, so you have to get the ...

NOT starring Goro 0

Gorogoa is an interesting and artful game that presents the user with no spoken story or characters, but still enraptures you in its fiction. I found myself reminiscing about children's search puzzle books The Eleventh Hour, somehow matured and combined with Rube Goldberg-esque machinery contained in a space-bending Birdman one-shot. The ways that they have you playing with perspective both physical and temporal are wonderful. The game is brief but delivers largely successfully on its reflectio...

The Government! 0

Jazzpunk is a bit of a timecapsule. The "random for the sake of random" vibe of the early 201X's is on display in this game, but I think that sells this one short. This is what you might get if Leslie Nielson were born in 1980 and grew up playing Monkey Island and making YTMNDs. Short, silly gags abound, with little purpose or thematic connection. Just tons of quick dumb laughs. The game just keeps moving. It is appropriately short, any longer and it would overstay it's welcome.Comedy in games i...

Call of Duty 16: Modern Warfare 4: The First Modern Warfare Game 0

What a blast! The first great CoD campaign in years. I only play the campaigns these days, never have time for new multiplayer games. Plus why would I want to play anything other than Wolfenstein Enemy Territory? That said, I'm sure the multiplayer is a lot of fun, aside from the fanbase...Installation is very stupid. I could not find the game on Battle.net after I bought it. Turns out you need to install Call of Duty: Warzone, then launch that and navigate to the Modern Warfare tab and install...

It's What's Inside that Counts! 0

I had my eyes on this one for a long time, having enjoyed Limbo way back in the day. Simply never found the time for it but boy am I glad it went on sale on Switch a couple months back and I finally found the time to play through it. I ended up completing the game in two sessions over two nights, both times in handheld mode. This game captures your attention immediately with its stark but beautiful graphics and lack of establishing narrative. The game sets the stage thru the visuals and how you ...

Outsider? I hardly know 'er 0

I was pretty disinterested in the story throughout this short 7 hour playthru. I have never been very captivated by the Outsider or any of the lore related to him. I always thought the basic setting and world building of the Karnaca society to be the highlight of Dishonored. This game didn't change that. This time thru I finally played a lethal path. It changes the game completely, and honestly I think it's for the worse, despite my previous complaints. I beat Dishonored 2 without killing anyone...

I was really looking forward to this one and I was not disappointed. The game was made by a very small team and it shows – this is no technical wonder and has a healthy amount of jank to it. Fortunately, that jank doesn’t detract in any meaningful way from the experience. My score doesn’t detract any points for the jank. This game is about the story and how you go about unravelling the mystery. It’s not a Pulitzer winner but the story gives you enough to keep you intereste...

Dishonored 2 Review 0

Right off the bat this is one of the worst performing games I've played recently. It's super variable, too, so I spent the first 2 levels effing around with visual settings trying to get it right. Very frustrating. It's a shame that Arkane is using the Void Engine again for Deathloop (rumor? confirmed? Not sure but I think so...) instead of CryEngine. Prey ran like a dream and looked amazing. Game play and level design are great, but generally less memorable than the first game. I love the 2nd t...

Dishonored Review 0

I tried starting this game a few times over the years but it finally clicked in 2021. It's complete package -- fun, great to look at, incredibly creative, unique -- but there's some thematic dissonance and a story that doesn't pay off. This is like a lite version of the Deus Ex/BioShock genre of "Immersive Sim" with some pretty cool traversal and combat and fantastic level design. There are a multitude of paths and player choice is the center of the game at all times. The "lite" commment comes ...

Crawl of Duty: Always Waiting 1

I would like to play the game, not watch it. I used to play CoD campaigns in a single sitting every year, up through Ghosts. That one put an end to my interest in that particular tradition.Advanced Warfare is fine, but it really highlights the lack of player control and interactivity that is so important in games that have come out since. The shooting feels good but also very pointless. Were these games always such a shooting gallery? The levels are awful. There's little challenge unless you play...

Rise of the Tomb Raider 0

This game is one of the most improved sequels I can remember playing in recent memory. The first game was fine, an enjoyable action game and perfectly fine way to spend some time. This game is something I will recommend strongly to friends who enjoy the genre, and something that offers such fun and dynamic gameplay that I want to talk about the game and hear about others' experiences. I'll remember this one!The story is a huge huge huge improvement over the first game, with collectibles unveili...

Tomb Raider 0

Decided to finally tackle this franchise after my recent Uncharted series replay. Tomb Raider doesn't match the polish of those games, or even approach it, but the game is fun in its own right.Traversal is fine, though not nearly as smooth as more modern games or as the UC series. Gunplay is fine, getting better later in the game. I enjoy using the signature bow.The environments are great and the setting is enjoyable. The plot outline and the island concept are fun, but the story loses me in so...

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End 0

Takes the Uncharted concept to a whole new level and tells a thrilling and touching tale.Verticality and in-and-out-of-stealth functions refresh the combat and make it the best yet.The Madagascar chase scene is one of the highpoints of the franchise. I also love the clocktower. The seeking AI is garbage and easy to exploit. Pop up and be seen, then just pop back down and it's like you were never there. Makes stealth gameplay very cartoonish. The final boss fight vs Rafe is awful. It has nothing to...

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Nathan Drake Collection 0

Played this for the first time since the original PS3 version at launch. It doesn't quite hold up as the "must-play" it was at the time, but is still a fun title in one of my favorite franchises. The first half is supremely boring, but once you get to the ship wrecking site the game really takes off and is a blast through to the end. Needed to leave some content on the editing room floor so to speak. Overall it falls well behind 2, LL and 4, but still amounts to a solid Uncharted which all fans...

The Last of Us Part II 0

Really a special experience and the result of an incredible vision and attention to detail. The standard to which this game is being held by some gamers is ludicrous. Incredibly dark and difficult to stomach but if you can enjoy that type of story you're in for something special. There has never been a game like this and a universe this well developed.Played unspoiled at launch...

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy 0

Lots of fun and very beautiful. Doesn't add much new but executes exceptionally well. The open world area and several of the vistas are very memorable. Was expecting closer to an expansion pack but it's a fully fleshed out game and well worth playing for fans of the series. Maybe only 2 and 4 are better.Played in Summer 2020 ...
