End Boss Month #9: No More Heroes

Henry. Alias: Sir Henry Motherfucker. Less a villain and more just an Irish-accented jerk and rival to No More Heroes protagonist Travis Touchdown, Henry actually doesn’t appear that often in the game. But when he does appear, he knows how to really make an entrance.

Henry’s first appearance comes roughly mid-way through the game as Travis is hunting down Letz Shake, a mysterious assassin that lures Travis out onto a highway in the desert countryside in order to do battle. Valiantly (or not), Travis charges forth, beam katana in hand, ready to cut Letz Shake and his giant brain-in-a-jar down to size.

And then Henry leaps in from out of nowhere and kills Letz Shake in one slice of his own beam sword.

In other words, he's a kill-stealing douchebag.
In other words, he's a kill-stealing douchebag.

Henry leaves just as quickly as he arrived, and he isn’t seen again unless the player manages to access the game’s true ending by acquiring all of the beam katana models in the game. Now that Travis has defeated his own half-sister and acquired the title of top-ranked assassin, he returns home to take a peaceful dump.

And then holy shit, Garcian Smith some dude that mysteriously looks and sounds like that one dude from Killer7 smashes through Travis’s bathroom door. Defenseless on the crapper, Travis is about to meet a humiliating end when he’s suddenly rescued by that mysterious Irish, kill-stealing jerk-off.

And then, after Henry insults Travis for letting his guard down while on the toilet, Travis pursues him outside, where they fight, man to man, laser sword to laser sword. Acrobatic, agile, and with blazing speed, Henry is seemingly an even match for our hero. And like some of the other bosses in the game, Henry is able to strike Travis down with an instant kill if he’s not careful.

That’s right. An instant kill. As in, no matter how much health you have left, you get hit by it, you die.

So protip. Don’t get hit by it.

But the crazier stuff doesn’t come until after Henry is bested in battle as he drops several ludicrous bombshells. First, he’s Travis’s twin brother (despite apparently being Irish). He’s also the husband of Sylvia, the woman that seduced Travis into this mess in the first place. Apparently, they’ve been married since college. Who knew? Also, who the hell reveals this kind of information when the game is just about to end? (The answer is Henry, of course.)

In short, Henry leaves a bag of loose ends for Travis to sort out, refusing to do any of the work himself because, in his own words, he’s not the protagonist. He’s just the cool, handsome foil who happens to be Travis’s twin brother. Unwilling to sort all of this insanity out, Travis continues his duel with Henry into a freeze-frame. The end.

Wait, what? What the hell is…oh forget it. There’s no way that I could possibly end this post in a way that could do the nature of Henry’s exit justice. So, toodles! So you tomorrow.

Where are your manners?, calling this gent a Jerk! , Henry is awesome I'm still hoping for a port of NMH2 to the PS3 to see what's up with mister sir Henry Motherfudger in that game.

It's a trolling, made even clearer by how Sylvia says there's not gonna be a sequel. Of course, that makes the sequel the trolliest troll ever to troll gamers.

Hate to break it to you but Henry is not in that game. Also it's not very good.

What are you talking about? he's totally there as a playable character and from what I've heard the game is pretty good, solves the problems of the first (minigames and open world stuff) and expands the combat system.

Yo, fuck this guy. I bailed on this game just shy of the end because this fight was so long and tedious.

I love No More Heroes so damn much. This boss battle was a fantastic end to it all.

I hated No More Heroes 2. Well, hate is strong, it didn't come close to the first one as far as...well anything.

Oh yeah, I think you play as him once. Gosh, my memory is bad right now. I still don't think the game is as good as the original.

I wish I could compare, but NMH2 left me so indifferent after a while that I just couldn't finish it. The game just couldn't grab me in the same way that the first one could.

I really didn't enjoy No More Heroes to much, I like the art style. But it gets mad hard and very repetitive later on.

I really liked No More Heroes. It was hard at first, but after figuring out Henry's attack patterns I finally beat him. Was a fun fight overall.

I haven't played NMH2, though I don't even think I'll play that game. Nothing about it grabbed my attention from watching the trailers.

In this thread, Pepsiman learns that there are other people out there who really liked No More Heroes but were otherwise indifferent to 2 after having the impression that this was a near-inaudible minority. Pepsiman is pleased, having finally found people to call its own.

It's a good game. The robot boss battle was fun, and it solved some of the problems of the first, BUT, i think one No More Heroes game is enough for a lifetime.

Anyone do this boss fight on hard (what is it called... "spicy" or something?)

It took me something like 45 minutes to beat him. What a trial. Also, you get no reward for finishing the game on hard, don't do it!

Indifferent? NMH2 was downright disappointing in a lot of ways. If it weren't for the mini-games being (mostly) better, I'd almost be inclined to say NMH2 is bad (and for the record, NMH 1 is one of my ten favorite games of all time).

Regardless, I would still buy and play a No More Heroes 3 in a heartbeat.

Edit: @Roomrunner: Yeah, I beat it on Bitter (I think that was what hard was called). And yeah, a single fight takes 45-50 minutes. Even worse when you end up dying half an hour into it.

I'm not sure I really need a NMH3, to be honest. I sort of feel that even NMH2 was unnecessary. In my mind, the original game really stands on its own, even with its insane cliffhanger ending (or really, maybe because of it). I just don't think any sequel could really live up to the sublime feel of the first.

But Lollipop Chainsaw looks a lot like No More Heroes in spirit, and I will play the hell out of that.

Why is Pepsiman referring to itself in the third person? And much to its dismay, No More Heroes 2 was just as awesome as the first game...probably because it was pretty much the first game all over again.

@Hailinel: I agree that it'd be completely unnecessary, but I'd play it anyway.

And apparently Lollipop Chainsaw has television ads, which blew my mind that a game that weird and (I thought) obscure would get TV ads.

It's being published by Warner Bros. and had production assistance from a Hollywood writer/director that worked on the English-language script and story. I can see why it would get better advertising than the average Suda 51 game.

And my opinion lies somewhere in the middle. No More Heroes 2 was a good game, but the first game was just vastly superior in terms of crazy. Especially when you compare the last hour of each game where the first game went into batshit insane territory and the second game seemed so fucking tame.

Also, fuck the Shinobu platforming.

ahh so that's why there were two ending options. oh, hey, i also just finished this game like 15 minutes ago.

the end to no more heroes is pretty great. the complete absurdity of the information and the way it's all conveyed sure was something fun to watch. the last bosses were pretty underwhelming though. as someone who had a plethora of trouble (for breakfast) with Bad Girl and Shinobu, i was disappointed that i beat Jeane and Henry on my first try. whatever, though. it made seeing the ending much more of a breeze.

..i still feel like i don't understand this game.

After I beat Henry and watched that ending, all I could do was applaud. Really, it was the only immediate response that I could muster.
