There really should be more games like this.

Morrigan in an RPG.  One of life's little bonuses.
Morrigan in an RPG.  One of life's little bonuses.
So as I noted in my blog post from yesterday, I recently restarted Cross Edge with the intent to dig deeper into it.  Disappointment with the way that some of the trophies are handled aside, it's actually a fun game.  The combat system and the system of scanning the world map are a little obtuse, but it's nothing that I haven't been able to grip so far.  However, the game is more enjoyable for me at least due to it being a crossover of a number of games and series that I'm familiar with, from the popular Darkstalkers, to the niche Disgaea, to the more niche Ar tonelico and Mana Khemia, to the even more niche Absolute Blazing Infinity.  There's just something appealing about a game that allows Morrigan to fight alongside a Prinny.

That being said, it's a bit disappointing that there aren't more crossover games of this type, and that more of them that do exist don't make their way over here.  Namco x Capcom is a treasure trove of a strategy RPG with Namco and Capcom characters galore, but it sadly never made its way west.  Sure, we've gotten Capcom fighters that pitted their characters against non-gaming properties like Marvel and Tatsunoko, and there are the upcoming Street Fighter/ Tekken mash-ups, but that's not really quite the same.  Crossover fighting games are a dime a dozen these days.  Even Mortal Kombat got into the act.  And as for Smash Bros., those games were 100% Nintendo until Brawl included all of two third-party guests.

We're finally getting the Sega Neptune...after a fashion.
We're finally getting the Sega Neptune...after a fashion.
What I really want to see is some of the major companies do what companies like Nippon Ichi, Idea Factory and Compile Heart have done several times now with titles like Cross Edge, Trinity Universe and Hyperdimension Neptunia, and go balls-out crazy with an RPG or strategy RPG that includes as many franchises from as many companies and for as wide a release as possible.  An unrealistic fanboy dream, true, but also one filled with potential.  And well, if smaller developers are able to not only make it happen, but also see it get an international release, there's really no reason why larger studios couldn't do the same while also having the resources to make something more technically proficient.

Video games have been around for decades, and in that time, a lot of historic games and nice franchises have come and gone.  Occasionally, a bigger company will step up to the plate to do something ludicrous to celebrate that history, like Segagaga, a game that celebrates Sega's history with a once-in-a-lifetime level of self-depreciation, and one of the most glorious final boss battles ever:

(Would you believe that the majority of this game is actually a form of business simulation?)  Segagaga arguably out-nerds the entirety of the Smash Bros. franchise.  And sadly, it was never released in the U.S.  And, like Cross Edge and Trinity Universe, it didn't exactly break the comparative bank to produce.  The potential of companies like Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, Square Enix and Konami getting together to produce a cross-over game at the magnitude of a full-blown RPG is comparatively immense.  Heck, even invite some of the smaller companies along for the ride, because Prinnies and Personae succeed in making everything better.  Though it may not ever be a realistic possibility, and thus will forever be the subject of vivid imaginations and poorly written fanfiction, I can't help but wonder how cool it would be if something like this were to actually happen.

Unless I've been criminally misinformed as to the basic plot behind SRW D, then it revolves around your crew trying to get the villainous factions to unite, or at least stop wiping each other out, long enough to save the earth, seeing as they're the only ones who have the sheer numbers required to hold off the coming threat.  Roger Smith joins your team to help with smoothing over the terms of the temporary ceasefire between the... volatile personalities that make up said villainous factions, like OZ and Neo-Zeon. D huh? Thats one of the GBA ones. Hmm.
I'm playing L and Z at the moment. Must remember to order Z2 when it gets released....

This is more a personal preference than anything, but I really can't play games that don't have a serious core to them. You can layer some humor on top of that (I think Bioware in particular appeals to my sense of humor), but I have a very narrow tolerance for silliness in games, or any medium, really.

I guess I'm just a serious guy. I freely admit, though, that this leads to me passing on games that look very fun, like last year's Bayonetta. Or all Platinum games, for that matter.

@Aetheldod:   Just because something is meant to be dark or serious doesn't mean it can't have its lighter elements.  I don't mind games that are humorless, but comic levity does a lot to help get through a game that's twenty hours long (if not more) that piles on layer after layer of melodrama.  (Why hello there, Heavy Rain.)

It's not wrong to say that a certain level of camp is almost inevitable in a crossover, but to say that they lack serious imagination and lead to stagnation is short-sighted and ignorant.

Perhaps I spoke wrongly , maybe Im being indeed short sighted but the last time I was faced with campyness was in No More Heroes , and it made me angry that in way of forcing campy stuff the fight against the second to last boss a lot of exposition was cut or rather "fast forwarded " , I know it was supposed to be funny , but I got mad and angry and I was looking seriously to the story  ... sigh its my fault really :( maybe Im just too much of a grinch "
You took No More Heroes seriously??  You have to be jokeing, no one has a stick that far up their ass.

Are you one of those people that watches "Dude, wheres my car" and then complain that it was dumb. No More Heroes is almost the lease serious game EVER, in fact the game it's self laughs at the concept seriousness. "
Well I take must stuff seriously , that just how I am .... >:3

@Hailinel Just saw the video you mentioned ,  its kinda of what I imagined tho ...  now my soul can rest :)  but really I hardly like comedic stuff that much especially when it involves good looking women ....  also other times when I dont like campy stuff is like in Shin Megami Nocturne , such a cool serious game and we get stupid Jackfrost in there ..... or the homosexual manikim , is a caricature that shouldn't be there or when in Final Fantasy games you see the ridiculous cactuar or the tornberry or the stupid sillines of the classic JRPG little kid steals wallet and makes fun of your characters , list goes on ....

@PixelPrinny:  The free DLC packs have definitely made the early game an easier affair.  Early generic enemies don't do any damage to me at all while I'm cleaning everyone's clock with a few strikes.  I'll need time to see how the rest of the game holds up and balances out once the effectiveness of the DLC gear wears off, but so far, I've found it worth putting up with the game's quirks.  I'll let you know if an how things change.

I remember that Mario Party-style game you're talking about, too.  I don't really know anything about it, though.

Well, that was the joke.  However, if you go onto Youtube, there are actually videos of that part of the game slowed down to the point where the dialogue is understandable, and well, let's just say that the look on Travis's face is not undeserved.  But really, No More Heroes was never meant to be taken seriously.  The game prides itself on being utterly insane from start to finish, the sequel even more so.  No harm done, though.  Don't feel too bad.  Maybe you just ought to look at games like that with a different attitude and you'll be able to enjoy them.

Oh get out of here with your seriousness. Games are waaaay to serious as they are now. "
Quoted for truth.

While there's nothing wrong with games pushing for more compelling narratives and trying to prove they can go toe-to-toe with movies or literature, there's equally nothing wrong with other games just wanting to have some silly fun. It's not like only X number of games can be made and it's not like you have to play such games if you don't want to. A developer making a cross-over of a few franchises doesn't lead to other developers (or even said developer) suddenly running out of ideas.  Anyhow, yeah it'd be neat to see some more cross overs. To be honest, outside of fighters, the only one I've really enjoyed is Trinity Universe. I found Namco x Capcom's combat was.... messy... so messy. And Cross Edge felt overall clunky, but since hearing you mention it again, I really am considering giving it another chance. Maybe those free DL packs you mentioned will make it more palatable  There was that Square x Enix Mario Party clone game that never came out over here... I wonder how that was.  "

Sadly, I'm not a fan of Bioware's work.  Dragon Age was fun; it played like Final Fantasy XII.  But their style of character development and general narrative structures just isn't to my liking.  I'd say Atlus has been far more inventive with their stories than Bioware on their own and that neither Atlus nor NIS really need to team up with BIoware to produce an RPG.  (And especially not after that one tool at Bioware proclaimed the JRPG genre as dead.) It's like I said, there's a lot of untapped potential that might just never be used as long as developers don't work together on such projects.

Everyone takes their universes and characters too seriously to try anything fun. Because video games are not about fun; they are about serious business.

Yeah, I don't know how I'll feel about Cross Edge in the long haul, but for it to mix the games it does together is something novel. "
I've played every single niche RPG for the ps2 there is Artonelico to Eternal Poison to Maki Kingdom, and they were great.  Almost all niche for the PS3 are depressingly terrible. Only two that are exempt are Demon's souls and Valkyrieia Chronicles.

Isn't it?  It's also pretty damn effective for being the first attack she actually has in the game.

Tell me about it.  It's nice that we get at least some games in the series, but a complete shame that they're not the ones that Super Robot Taisen is actually known for.
