Dreamcast Collection -- RANT TIME

So, with the announcement of the "Dreamcast Collection", I am going to rant.

The main problem is, the choice of the 4 fucking games in the thing.  Here's the breakdown:

1.  Sonic Adventure --  SA blows.  Plain and simple.  We were all suckered (me included) on 9/9/99 when it came out, with the first two levels.  After that the game fails miserably.  Horrible camera, combat, characters (my god, the characters!), awful levels, huge patches of the game where you just wander around hoping to trip into a cinematic to tell you what to do, it's endless.  If that game came out today, it would be laughed at.  Actually, it already was.  Big the Cat is also one of the worst characters of all time.  Ever.

2.  Space Channel 5: Part 2 -- Well, there's two problems.  1.  Space Michael is probably going to be cut out, which is a bummer,  since he's one of the few good things.  And 2.  Part 2 is kind of a shitty game.   It never came out to American Dreamcast's, only the PS2.  Space Channel is by no mean a perfect game, but hell Part 1 is leaps and bounds better than Part 2.  What the hell?

3.  CrAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAzy Taxi -- No Offspring, or Bad Religion = FAILURE

4.  Sega Bass Fishing -- Seriously?  SERIOUSLY?!  It's a FUCKING FISHING GAME!  That sucked back then.  It was only made tolerable due to that goofy-ass fishing controller.  Now, unless they're making a converter for that thing to work for the 360 (which I doubt), this game serves no purpose.

Also 2 of these games (SA1 and Crazy Taxi) are both on the Xbox 360, and PC anyway.  So fuck you, Sega.

Here's a small list of games, that'd be great:

1.  Power Stone 1, or 2.  Never played 2, but 1 is quite great.  Especially the guy who turns into a Super Saiyan and does the yellow spirit bomb thing.
2.  Marvel vs. Capcom 1.  Why not?  It'd be a nice throw-back.
3.  Armada -- If they patched in Live co-op, it'd be amazing.  Even without, the game is still great.
4.  Jet Grind Radio -- Fix the analog stick imprecision, and it'd be golden.
5.  Shenmue (kind of) -- nerds like Shenmue, but the game is trash.  Still an interesting historical curiosity, but nothing else.
6.  Maken X -- super weird, and kind of obscure FPS game, where you brain-jack people, and fight.
7.  Cannon Spike -- Any game named after Cammy's special attacks are "OK" in my book.  Kind of a weird game, but fun.
8.  Chu-Chu Rocket -- Obviously.
9.  Daytona USA 2001:  My friend Frank Provo (former GS dude) is semi-obsessed with it.  There was supposed to be some HD remake on the 360, but it apparently stalled (pardon the pun)
10.  Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver  -- The DC version is the best.
11.  Project Justice --  Rival Schools gets no love, but I really enjoyed this game, except for that fruity swimmer guy.  I really like the idea of high-school kids beating the shit out of each other with Hadoukens, and huge baseball bats.
12.  MDK2 -- a sequel to MDK 1, but this time made by Bioware.  Max and Kurt are great to play, but the Doctor sucks.
13.  Phantasy Star Online -- It'd be a really weird throw-back game, but it would be interesting.
14.  Starlancer (kind of)  -- I loved Starlancer, but the game's controls are virtually insane.  I think I'm one of 3 people ever to figure the game out on the original DC.
15.   Sword of the Berzerk -- A really fun 3rd person action game.  No chance though.
16.   Trickstyle/Re-Volt -- Both are great, but I loved Trickstyle more, because it looked fantastic.  Plus it had hoverboards.  No chance for either due to the Acclaim bankruptcy.
17.  San Fransisco Rush 2049 --  Very unlikely.  But come on, cars with wings.  What more do you want?

That's about it.  I would've thrown up Skies of Arcadia, but I never played it (and I doubt I ever will).

Also, Sega, if you make another collection, and put Sonic Adventure 2 on it, we're done. That game is like a vomit-covered abortion.  STOP IT!

PSP Ordered

So, I have a birthday coming up, the 24th of Jan.  With this in mind, a friend of mine said "What do you want?" And I responded "PSP!"  So she gave me the money for it.  I ordered a PSP Slim 2000 model, Silver color.  It only comes with the system, battery, and AC adapter.  No USB cord, or games, or anything.

BUT, it's a Silver PSP, with old-ish (6.10) firmware.  Teehee.

Plans for the device:

1.  Get device, make sure it works.
2.  Buy USB cord, and 32gb memory stick.
3.  Buy Crisis Core, and Kenka Bancho, also possibly Z.H.P.
4.  Pay some shady dude to come over and mod my PSP with the latest custom firmware.
5.  Party down!

Yes, CFW is a "must" for PSP owners.  While I won't be doing any illicit crap, there are a few things I love about it, like the in-built cheat plug-in, and the ability to play PSP games on my computer screen.  I can't wait till I get it, and fix it all up.

Also, I really dislike the black PSP, hence why I ordered the silver one.  I had a black one before, and it was a huge finger-print magnet, which wasn't that cool.  Hopefully the silver one will be better.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Roster thoughts

As with some people, I've been following MvsC3's roster updates, videos, etc.  I have some thoughts on it, who they should add/delete, etc.

Marvel Side:
1.  Captain America -- Should be fine, he was fine in the previous games.  Hope they can give him a better chance if he looses his shield though.
2.  Deadpool -- might be ok.  The "him beating people with a life-bar" thing is cute.  Hope he breaks the 4th  wall a lot.
3.  Doctor Doom -- looks exactly like previous versions.  "Eh" comes to mind.
4.  Dormammu --"Uh, ok".  His fire-rain thing looks cheap.  Also, he basically is like Mephisto from MvsC2.
5.  Hulk -- Never really liked him, but he looks exactly the same.  I hope his 360 grapple thing has less priority this time around.
6.  Iron Man -- Same, NEXT!
7.  Magneto -- Looks the same.  Although I hope his force-field thing is useful this time around.
8.  MODOK -- Dude, it's MODOK.  If you can have 3 of the same characters on your team, I know who Ryan Davis is choosing.
9.  Phoenix --  Her homing bird attack might be ok.  Zero other thoughts.
10.  She-Hulk -- I like that she's more of an acrobatic grappler, and not just straight power-house.
11.  Spider-Man -- I hope his super web-throw combo works a little better.
12.  Storm --  Should be fine, if she has better supers.
13.  Super Skrull -- Good compromise to the Fantastic 4 issue.  Might be cheap, but who knows?
14.  Thor -- looked a BIT cheap, but should be interesting.
15.  X-23 -- who cares?  They already have Wolverine.
16.  Wolverine -- You only need one.  Not 3 of them.  Least it's not "Bone-claw" Wolverine.

Characters they need:
 1.  Cyclops  -- Always used him in the prior ones.  He's basically the Ryu of the game.
2.  Ice-Man -- Needs more supers, but his freeze-ray, insta-freeze throw were fun.
3.  Gambit  -- Again, needs more supers, but I LOVED how he played, and routinely beat the shit out of people with him.
4.  Venom (or Anti-Venom as he's now known) -- Would be a good counter to Spider-Man
5.  Shatterstar  -- Would be a TON of fun, and a good analog of Deadpool.

Characters they don't need:
1.  Cable --  everyone knows why
2.  Sentinel -- again, everyone knows  why
3.  Rogue -- she was cool in X-Men vs. Street Fighter when she actually copied powers.  In MvsC2 they nerfed her, only letting her get boosts from people.  LAME!  If they brought her back, they'd probably just do the same thing.
4.  X-23  --  Having two Wolverine is dumb.
5.  Not entirely sold on Phoenix, but we'll wait and see.

---------------------

Capccom side:
1.  Amaterasu -- the height thing might be an issue, but they'll work around it.  Looks ok.
2.  Arthur -- Digging far back in the well.  I like the exploding armor thing fine.
3.  Chris  --  Everyone loves a Resident Evil character....that's why this game has 3.
4.  Chun-Li -- Same as before
5.  C. Viper -- Hopefully she'll have a projectile in the game, or else she's gonna be boned.  Needs another super.
6.  Dante --  Looks VERY cheap.  Also, it'd be funny if they re-style him as the new Dante, to piss all the fanboys off.
7.  Felicia --  Hopefully they fix some of her weakness's (such as being a shite character)
8.  Mike Haggar --  I know who Jeff is gonna play as.  As long as he's not a "360-rotate the control stick" grappler like Zangief, he should be fine.
9.  Morrigan -- Looks the same as before
10.  Ryu -- It's Ryu.  Come on, how much could they change about him?
11.  Spencer -- Needs to say "COME OVER HERE" when he uses his arm.  About it.
12.  Trish -- I had no idea who this was before I looked her up.  Not a great sign.
13.  Tronne -- Yeah, it's Tronne.  Hope she has a better attack than her one in MvsC2.   (The dash-drill thing)
14.  Viewtiful Joe -- Looks kind of broken, and I'm not sure why.  Just doesn't look fun.
15.  Wesker -- Might be interesting, but also a bit cheap like Dante.
16.  Zero -- His double-Super might be fun.  Not much else to say.

Characters they need:
 1.  Captain Commando -- His goddamn name says it all.  Plus his anti-air special was great to annoy people with.
2.  Strider -- He's been in all of them before.  His attacks kind of suck, but he's fun to watch.
3.  Mega Man -- If you have Zero, why no Mega?
4.  Servbot -- just because it'd be funny

Characters they don't need:
1.  Trish -- Looks very cheap, and very ancillary to the games she's in
2.   Chris or Wesker.  You already have Jill (DLC and Special Edition unlock)  Do you need 3 RE characters?
3.  C. Viper -- There's a few people in Street Fighter's roster that are a bit more fun (Ken, Gouken, Cammy)
4.  Viewtiful Joe -- Dunno why, but he looks boring.  Maybe it's the bombs?
5.  Felicia (maybe) -- Felicia depends on whether or not they can fix her.  If they can, cool.  If not, dump her.

 ----------------------

I also know a few characters are rumored/DLC.  Chief among them, Shuma-Gorath, Jill Valentine, Akuma, and a few more.  Jill and Akuma were fine, but Shuma sucked balls, a needs better attacks to do anything useful.  I'll update this when more people are announced, or things change.

Stardock -- Yay or Nay?

Well, I've been considering whether or not Stardock is a good developer/publisher lately. This comes on the heels of a recent interview with Stardock's CEO/President, Brad Wardell.

You can read the article here if you want.

I'm not so sure he knows what he's talking about anymore.  Why would you really flush more money on Elemental, down the toilet?  Doesn't that seem a bit counter-intuitive?  Why not just come out and say "Ok, this game is shitty.  You can't win them all, but we'll take what we learned about it, reverse it, and our next game  will be great"/  Would that be such a bad thing?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge fan of Stardock's previous games.  I have Galactic Civ 2, and Sins of a Solar Empire, but both are incomprehensible to me.  I bought Gal Civ 2 because it wasn't using DRM, and I wanted to support (with money) that decision.  And I think I bought SOASE because it was 6$ for a weekend sale thing.  But, as a whole, the "4X" game genre is bewildering to me.  But both games are fairly decent in what they do, and have their fans.  Just because I can barely make it past the tutorial stages doesn't make them bad, just not my taste.

Elemental is a wash.  Just drop it and move on.

Also, I like Impulse (their own digital distribution service), and it's a decent alternative to Steam.  However it has a few problems:

1.  Their prices are usually more than Steam's (not always, but usually)
2.  Their sales are not great
3.  The website is cluttered, and should be streamlined a bit.
4.  It has a LOT of weird crap on it.  Both good and bad really.  Good in that you MIGHT find a jewel hidden amongst the rough.  Bad in that, for ever 100 Eastern Bloc, or Russian games, 99 of them will suck.

The actual program is fine though, so that's ok.

I just wonder if Stardock really has a clue anymore, especially about their games.  Anyone else have any thoughts on Stardock?

Trivia Bug?

So, I was happily answering Trivia questions, and answered some, and then got booted to the Trivia Leaderboard, with this URL:

 http://www.giantbomb.com/trivia/leaderboard/?no_more_questions=true

I can't get back to the quiz, and when I press the "take the quiz" links, nothing happens.

So.....just wondering if I answered all the Trivia questions?  Or is this some bug?  The Trivia feature is one of my favorites (and a complete time-sink), so it'd be a shame if I "beat it" by going through all the questions.

Thanks

DTL-H1101

So I got my new console,  like a month ago.  But I was in the hospital, and only recently got out.  So, I took some pictures of it.  It's a Sony Playstation 1 Debugging Station, DTL-H1101.  Basically, it's a debugging console, can play normal PS1 games, PAL/Japanese games, and CDR (burned) games.  Quite a nice find, for 75$.  Here are the pictures I took:

I just blacked out the shipping label.

Semi-New PC

Ordered a "new" (refurb, or used) pc on a website today.  It's a Dell Optiplex GX260.  Sppecs are as follows:

3.0ghz dual core cpu

80gb hard drive

1gb of ram

Intel GMA video card

Win XP, with recovery cd.

So...yeah, I know it's not great, by any means.  But it was only 185$ (total), so that's fine.  I need a replacement while my current gaming laptop goes to Best Buy for repairs (needs a new screen).  I'll probably upgrade the video card (any recommendations?) and ram, and use it.

Also, I'll post a longer update about what's going on, in a little while.

So...G4, eh?

So, saw a funny tweet by Victor Lucas (Electronic Playground dude), in which he wants to save G4 on American broadcast companies.  Apparently, DirecTV wants to drop G4 on Nov. 1st.  His quote is, " Need more geek TV in US not less!"

...yeah...

Ok, first thing, I actually like Victor Lucas.  I never watched Electronic Playground regularly, because I honestly don't think it's ever been really shown much, in America.  However, I did used to watch/enjoy "Judgment Day" which was on G4.  Judgment Day was a two person review show with Lucas, and Tommy Tallarico, that aired up until 2006.  I should note, Judgment Day was the American name for the show.  Lucas is MAD Canadian, and the show's Canadian name was "Reviews on the Run" (which still exists somewhere up there, and...yeah)

Ok, here's the problem with Lucas's statement:  G4 is probably the FURTHEST thing away from actual geek tv (that is trying to capture the market)  To my knowledge there's two other networks trying to appeal to "geeks" (or gamers, or take your pick) ,  Syfy, and Spike TV.  Syfy has this embarrassing WCG Ultimate Gamer show on, which is a reality show to try and find the "ultimate gamer", apparently.  Spike TV has a show called "GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley".  It's a little geared towards fluff, but Keighley is perfectly fine.

With this in mind, and with G4 trying to get the "nerd" "geek" "gamer" or whatever phrase they want to use, viewing audience, let's take a looko at 10/29/2010's ENTIRE schedule, from top to bottom.

12:00 AM and 12:30 AM, "It's Effin' Science".  Uh, from the description, it sounds like a bad Mythbusters clone.  I literally have no other thoughts on this show.
1:00 AM to 2:00 AM  "Attack of the Show".  Presumably a rerun of the one from 6 hours ago.  I'll get into AOTS later.
2:00 AM to 2:30 AM  "X-Play"  Again, presumably the repeat of the new one that aired prior, and once again, I'll get into it later.
2:30 AM to 3:00 AM "Web Soup".  Ok, I like Chris Hardwick, and he actually has some knowledge.  However, this is a terrible show.  The premise is god-awful, because NO ONE CARES ABOUT INTERNET VIDEOS.  The reason the Soup is popular is because they take clips from tv.
3:00 AM to 4:00 AM  "Cheaters"  Yes, watching the dumbest, most white-trashiest (not that they're all white, but you get the stereotype) people and their 3 minutes of yelling at each other.  This certainly fulfills some aspect of being "geeky".  Plus, the show is fake, so there you go.  It caters more towards fat, 40 year old housewives than the 18-30 male demographic.
4:00 AM to 5:00 AM "Attack of the Show"  In case you missed it 2 hours ago, and hate yourself.
From 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM the network just runs paid programming.  Which is dumb, but at least the whores on those shows admit that they're whoring something....as opposed to some whores I'll expose later on.
9:00 AM to 10:00 AM  "Cheaters"  Great.
10:00 AM to 11:00 AM "Ninja Warrior"  I actually love Ninja Warrior.  It's a great show.  G4 kind of ran it into the ground a bit, but the core show is good, and fun to watch.  Also, "American Ninja Warrior" is fucking dumb.
11:00 AM to 11:30 AM "Unbeatable Banzuke"  A little less focused than Ninja Warrior, but still good.  Needs a better name.
11:30 AM to 12:00 PM  "Whacked Out Videos"  Web Soup, without Chris Hardwick?  Dumb.
12:00 PM to 1:00 PM "Attack of the Show"  Again, probably the repeat from yesterday.
1:00 PM to 1:30 PM  "X-Play"  Repeat from the day before.
1:30 PM to 2:00 PM "That's Tough".  A new?  show that counts down the "toughness" of various groups.  In this episode, it's Special Forces, Taxi Drivers, and Rites of Passage.  Sounds like it belongs on the Military Channel.
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM  "Campus PD"  Ostensiby, this is Cops on College.  Basically "Cops" who  can't even make an actual police force, patrol college's, and harass students.  More of it's "geek" centric programing, I suppose.
4:00 PM to 5:00 PM  "Cops"  YES, finally!  The most gamer-centric show of them all.  Full of inbreds, hicks, rednecks, and dumbasses.  As a general aside, most geeks/nerds/gamers somewhat respect the law, but really don't give a shit.  The "law" isn't so much as a device for protection, as it is a tool to keep people down.  Also, I know every Saturday night, from 8:00PM to 9:00 PM on Fox, ALL the gamers are watching Cops.  Yeah...
5:00 PM to 5:30 PM "Campus PD"  Great.
5:30 PM to 6:30 PM "Cops"  More greatness.
6:30 PM to 7:00 PM "X-Play" The new episode.  Morgan Webb is generally awful.  Adam Sessler is ok, when he's not spazzing out.  The show's bits/comedy don't work.  Yep...
7:00 PM to 8:00 PM "Attack of the Show"  Apparently, the cancerous Olivia Munn is off the show (to ruin the Daily Show), so that's a plus for this show, and a minus for The Daily Show.   Kevin Pereira is a bit spazzy also, but good.  Except for Alison Haislip, all the other women on the show (Kristin, Blair, Tiffany) are incredibly fake.  Haislip isn't much better, but she's decently crazy, so that's ok.  Olivia Munn is one of the worst people alive.   Also, she's the whore I mentioned above.  Only, she's the type of whore who doesn't put out.  Which, actually, makes her a bigger whore in the process.
8:00 PM to 10:00 PM "Cops"  Awesome, cause the past hour and a half just wasn't enough.
10:00 PM to 12:00 AM  "Heroes"  No one cares.  That's kind of why it was canceled.

Yes, most of these shows just SCREAM geek-cred.  I know I start fingering my inhaler with nervous anticipation, and start  the "haXoring" whenever I know Cops is going to be shown.  Oh, wait "haXoring" is illegal, guess I won't do that.

You have to wonder if anyone at G4 is fucking paying attention, or if they give a shit at all.  G4 is among the lowest rated Cable networks around.  It's so low-rated, that DirecTV doesn't give a shit, and wants to yank it.  When a network has 6 and a half hours devoted to Campus PD, and Cops, that says a lot.  It says they don't  care.  So, honestly, why  should we?

Recent Buyin' a-Happenin'

So, this weekend was kind of fun.  "Hooray!" for "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" at Gamestop.  I was able to get a whole bunch of PS2 crap:

1.  Persona 3: FES (30$)

2.  Peraona 4 (35$)

3.  Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (30$, but free)

4.  Kingdom Hearts 2 (20$)

5.  Shadow of the Colossus (20$)

6.  Disgaea 2 (20$, but free)

7.  MGS 3: Subsistance (15$)

8.  Okami (17$)

9.  Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (13$, but free)

This was all on Friday night.  I traded in like 52 PS2 games that were crap (I bought some PS2 "grab-bags" of random PS2 games, that sucked), as well as the games I got when I got the system.  I got 52$, and also a Edge Card membership thing.  Because of the deals, the entire package was 75$.  Well, 85$ plus the memory card I got.

---------------------

1.  Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 (30$)

2.  Shadow Hearts Covenant (20$)

3.  Final Fantasy 12 (12$, but free)

This was today.  Due to the discounts, it was 47$, total.

---------------------

1.  Odin Sphere (15$)

2.  Disgaea 1 (15$)

3.  Grim Grimoire (10$, but free)

Total was 35, due to it being on the website, not using my Edge Card, and shipping.

---------------------

So...yeah, overall, this weekend was alright.  :)
