I feel like one of the most common phrases I hear from developers when they're promoting a sequel or a new game is...
"This is the biggest map we've ever built"
A recent example of this was the demo for the new Tomb Raider, where the developer on stage claimed that the map is "3 times larger" than the previous tomb raider.
Now, I'm all for more content, I love feeling like I'm going to get my money's worth, but does bigger necessarily mean better? does bigger mean that you've added more collectibles? Does bigger mean the story will take place over in more varied and interesting locations?
I understand that developers are proud of their work and the worlds they builed an want to make it feel like a real place an not a series of corridors. But I also feel at times that they're are making it bigger just because they can.
My question to you is, does this mean anything to you? When they say "it's x times bigger" or "it takes hours to walk from one end of the map to the other", does that make you more interested? Does it have any affect on you at all?
