You can't go into RPGs without some patience. Unlike most other genres, RPGs require a significant time investment before you experience the full extent of the payoff. It's not about them being an acquired taste, you just have to go into the game with the expectation that it needs time to really get going.
I've played tons of RPGs, so when I find the first 30 minutes of an RPG unexciting it really doesn't bother me at all and I really don't think any less of the game. That's just the nature of the genre. I'm more than willing to tolerate that initial hump because, at least for the better entries in the genre, the rest of the game is engaging.
I think part of your experience may be due to the expectations that you had. It isn't really your fault if you're relatively inexperienced with the genre, but from now on keep that in mind.
