I'm a senior in college majoring in Philosophy and English, looking to go to grad school in the former, get a PhD, and become a professor. I've worked some as a TA for gifted children.
Well, if by "real" we mean actual, existing naturally without human construction, then there is no real America. America is socially constructed. It exists only because a great population of human kind believes it to. If we all lost faith in the name, or we stopped using it as a pseudonym for the oh so wordy United States of America, then it would disappear or take on a different meaning just like "witch" has in our lexicon.
More important: Nice use of peccadilloes there, Ryan. I'm supposed to be studying for the GRE and I never thought Giant Bomb would remind me of it. Huzzah, good sir. Perhaps this victory of verbosity will make up for your losing wager.
This was a valuable discussion to have. Dude doesn't like Half-Life 2; other people explain what they like about it. Boom. Discussion. Learning about other opinions. That's why boards exist.
But, now that we've established the perspectival divide, perhaps it would be best if we move on. I realize posting that a thread should end is hypocritical and contradictory, but I think this thread is a good example of a trend, and I wanted to expostulate.
Looks pretty, but tells us next to nothing. Hopefully this game is more character driven and open. The Resistance games are fun, but they've always felt like Insomniac is just trying to find their way through a genre rather than something truly unique. I loved the alien-pod infested 50's suburbia in the last game, so more of that sort of atmospherics would be lovely.
Hi all, I've been lurking on the site since the beginning (basically followed the former GS crew over), but I only got a membership when I knew I wanted to pay the boys back for all the entertainment and insight over the years. So, I'm here, which is a great idea for my senior year of college. I'm a English and Philosophy double major, and I plan to go to grad school and eventually become a professor of Philosophy--Hence the Socrates icon and Kierkegaard name. I've been playing games since I was about 5, starting with PC games and moving to console with the PS2. Now I have a PS3 and a mac with steam and battlenet. So, that's me.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof," says The Constitution. This isn't an issue of tradition or values, but one of legality.
Legally, as interpreted by the Supreme Court, the above clauses make it illegal to either promote or degrade one particular religion over another in the US. "One nation under God" in the Pledge or "In God we trust" are phrases without any secular purpose that promote one type of religious belief (monotheism, specifically of the Islam, Christian, Jewish variety) over others. That's illegal and should be changed.
