You mean best combat in the series right? Because it's excellent. Also comparing real time action to ATB is sort of a weird comparison to make.

@xanadu: Saw some quotes floating around. The game engine of FF15 is super old and custom built for consoles. Adapting it for PC would require a LOT of work and I really don't think it would be profitable in the end. Especially if, as I fear, the game doesn't do super great on PS4 and Xbone.

It's Luminous Engine and it will be coming to PC. We've seen the game running on PC builds already. They said they want to do it right though and take advantage of the PC power and capabilities. This game already looks gorgeous, but a 4K/60FPS version? Sign me up.

Chapter 9. Also you can always go back pretty much whenever so don't worry about feeling locked into the linear portion. There are certain segments where you can't, but those aren't very often.

Haven't gotten that far yet but I read that you can just continue playing after you complete the story. Can someone else confirm?

Yup. You save your complete file and just go right back in. This when the post game stuff/quests unlock as well so it behooves you to beat it and then load that completed save.

I enjoy what Digital Foundry does, but most of the issues they talk about in any game the common person won't even notice.

I've been playing on HQ mode on the Pro and have not been bothered one tiny bit by "frame pacing".

Also Dark Souls III will not make the list. I said the same thing about Bloodborne last year and was right about that, even though people thought I was nuts for thinking that.

You guys are making it hard to wait for the completely unannounced PC version...

Damn, was just loading up Steam for it :( I did just get a new 4k/HDR TV...Playstation Pro worth it? Hmmm...

It looks amazing like that. I have the same setup and it's a very nice hold over til the PC version comes out, especially with the further Pro patch next month.

I've already beaten the game and it's my GOTY as I've said elsewhere (hurray for getting it early).

I dunno, there's a lot I love about the game, but I feel as if I don't have a firm grasp on the combat so it results in me winning and not sure what I did or dying and not sure how I died so fast. I feel like I have to unlearn a lot of things from other action games. In something like Bayonetta, the enemies have really obvious tells and it gives you eons to dodge. The tells in XV seem a lot more subtle and there's a lot going on so a lot of the time I'm taking damage I never saw coming or couldn't properly avoid.

Also, I just feel weak. Both in terms of the damage I do and receive.

Hey, like listen, I'll be the first to say I'm probably missing something. I'm gonna stick with it because like I said, there' s a lot I'm really loving (world, graphics, music, characters, etc etc) but there are parts that haven't clicked with me yet and I'm still at the point where I'm willing to accept it's my fault.

You do more damage from behind (Blindside Attacks), which also trigger Link Attacks. Warp strikes do more damage the further and/or higher you are from your target. Even though it's a fast paced system it's best to really try to take your time and don't just jump into the fray. Try out wait mode as well. There really is no downside to it. It just activates automatically when you stay still for a few moments so you can survey the battlefield better.

Thanks for providing some early feedback! I have been on the fence for this game, and even after these early impressions and reading the reviews out there, I still have some big unanswered question marks (which at this point may mean I won't know unless I play it for myself). But maybe someone who's played a good amount can give some more insight on my primary concerns.

I haven't gotten a good sense yet how repetitive the combat and quest design are. A lot of people seem to like the combat in general, but I haven't gotten a great sense as to why. From videos it looks like either a mess or kind of shallow (or both), but how does it hold up when actually playing it? Does it become kind of "same-y" or "mashy" after a bit? Does it evolve much during the game? Is there much skill involved? And how challenging is the game as a whole?

Going along with that, how is the quest structure? I get the sense that many of the side quests are generic filler, but that some better ones are hidden in there. Are they meaningful to do before beating the game? (I've read that better side content opens up afterwards?) If you don't do any side stuff could that make the critical path harder? Is the side stuff kind of the bulk and/or the "point" of this game? (As it sometimes can be for open world stuff.)

Ultimately, I've been turned of by other big "open world" RPGs like Xenoblade and Dragon Age Inquisition which had too many repetitive quests, and combat that was bland and uninteresting (to me at least). I'm trying to figure out if FFXV may have similar pitfalls for me ;)

Obviously my personal opinion here. In regards to quests you definitely have the typical fetch quest type stuff. Go kill these things, go get this thing for me, etc. Some are more in depth then others and can lead to cool stuff. Hunts are basically go kill these tougher monsters and increase your Hunter rank and get money (a great way to do so), and rewards. Hunts are fun and challenging. The combat just feels good. I know that's a bit vague, but hitting stuff feels satisfying, you have Link Strikes (which are team up attacks that happen automatically in certain conditions), Link Skills which are attacks your teammates can do when you order them to, magic, Summons (whenever they decide they feel like helping), Blindside attacks which is extra damage from the rear and also lead to Link Strikes, and of course the Warp Strike which is super rad. There is a LOT to combat and this is pretty much in its base form. You can upgrade it further in the numerous skill trees. For example I finally got an ability that I saved for called Air Dance that lets me infinitely dodge while doing mid air combos. So basically I'm striking in the air, zipping out, and then zipping in to strike again only to zip out again to avoid attacks.

It's easy to get overleveled for the main story (I was usually like 8-10 levels above the main story quest recommendation). That being said it didn't affect my enjoyment and some enemies/dungeons were still a challenge (this is normal difficulty. the other is easy). There is a TON of post game stuff to do and the dungeons in this game, in general, are fantastic, which was a huge surprise for me. The game gets linear at a certain point, but you generally always have a way to return so you aren't locked in or anything. The game is good about telling you "hey if you go do this thing, you might not come back for a while".

If those games didn't do it for you I'm not sure if XV can persuade you. I like the combat here more then those games (and I really like all those games), the game is gorgeous (I love the modern aesthetic) and the OST is incredible. Exploring still feels fun to me, even in the post game.

I know a lot of people are saying Hitman now, but don't forget they REALLY love Doom. I'm super excited for this years awards. I do think top three are almost definitely Doom, Hitman, and Titanfall 2.

I never post on the GB forums, preferring to lurk and read but I just had to say to everyone who got the game early:

Thanks for not spoiling.

Thanks for posting thought out and useful stuff.

Just be weary of Youtube recommended videos, and other forums. Spoilers have been out there, for like a week and a half. Only gonna get worse once the game actually releases.

@gaff: I just got a patch update which is the 1.02 which I believe is the crown update with longer kingsglave cut scenes, bug fixes and improved gameplay, like the warp drop kick.

I did as well. The Kingsglaive stuff was already in though, from the prior patch. This one has warping outside of battle, some camera improvements/options, being able to wait til night on Hunts that require it (thank god), and more, etc.
