In an L.A. Noire video showing what Phelps can do as side quests. This includes collecting collectibles, collecting exclusive cars and performing unassigned cases.

In the video it announced that L.A. Noire will have 40 unassigned cases spanned across Los Angeles. Most of the unassigned cases will have some action involved (A plus for action seeking players). Unassigned cases are like GTA: IV's random characters and Red Dead Redemption's strangers/random occurrences.
The video also has some extra game footage. You can also see some of the driving in the game. Seems a little like GTA: IV.

The game will have cases that are similar to the Black Dahlia murders. This has been mention by numerous previewers. Eventually it'll be part of the story in a way. One case "The Red Lipstick Murder" was a case influenced in the murder of Jeanne French, which was a part of the Black Dahlia murders.

Article Here

IGN recently just released an article that gives a little more information on Phelps background.
Well, we've already seen a few trailers where Phelps looks... disturbed.
From Gameplay Orientation:
"looking to right the wrongs committed in his time in the war"
"You look spooked Phelps"  "It never gets any easier Bekowsky."

So what happened to Phelps during the war (possible flashback/cutscene of Phelps in the war to-be-seen in the game). There was info that Phelps has/had a wife. Maybe he killed his wife on purpose or on accident... or maybe something different.

Phelps' time in the war is the backdrop and main motivator for him to want to do the right thing within the LAPD. He enrolled as an officer believing that right would always be on his side and that he had what it takes to lead men.

Maybe he led his battalion/squadron to their death? He likely did something wrong in the war and he wants to fix that by being a good cop.

At first, Phelps seems a little too clean-cut to really dig deep as a detective, but Phelps quickly proves he's prepared to make difficult decisions.

Making difficult decisions...

Cole gets along with some partners better than others, and players can learn a lot about each partner while driving with them to locations during cases.

If you're a person who likes a good story, then I suggest you don't skip the car rides.

IGN: After a few hours with L.A. Noire, I'd say most players will see Phelps as an altruistic, noble, heroic do-gooder. How much will that perception change by the end of L.A. Noire?

Jeronimo Barrera:
Like many great noir characters, Phelps is more complicated than he first appears. That journey is at the core of the experience of playing the game: in a town like Los Angeles, everybody has something to hide.

I see a great story in this game already!

This article answers the questions of Phelps background such as "Why did Phelps become a cop", "How does the war influence him", and much more.

Well as long as I get to play the game without any tech error (because of the discs) then I'm good. Swapping discs won't be too bad either. I also sort of hope that Rockstar does a pretty small exclusive for Xbox owners too.

It is said that Cole Phelps has a wife (possibly married right before he shipped out to war). Phelps does have a love interest for Elsa Lichtmann (as seen in a couple of trailers), meaning that he is 'cheating' on his wife, his wife is deceased, or they have had a divorce.  In images of Phelps, he is seen wearing a ring on his left hand, ring finger.

Phelps having a wife has been neither confirmed nor denied from Rockstar.

It is also unknown if his wife will show up in the final game.

@Ahmad_Metallic: You should be thanking Rockstar for the information given here. I just post them to Giant Bomb. =)

Well both commentaries were great, so doing L.A. Noire should be good too. Although L.A. Noire is a serious game you might want to add 'spice' to your commentary when you play the game.

There is a fast travel system when you are off to a crime scene. Which is basically where you have your partner drive. I don't know if there is a fast travel for every occasion though.

Today Rockstar posted up what Rockstar Social Club members can access and get.

  • Social Club members will get a new suit which increases accuracy for both shotguns and machine guns.
  • They'll also have the opportunity to use the 'ask the community' feature, which is basically where the answers (Truth, Doubt, Lie) have percentage signs representing the most correct. They all come from what the Social Club community has posted as correct. For example, if 'Truth' has 58%, Doubt has 35%, Lie has 5%, then it's most likely this person is telling the truth, but remember this is from the community so answers may not be 100% correct.
  • Social Club members will also get a 100% checklist for the game. 100% is based on film reels collected, how many cases closed, street crimes completed, landmarks discovered, and much more!
  • There'll be a case tracker to see if you have all the clues to a case. It's also like your own notebook on-the-go, as it shows what you have in your notebook in-game and what evidence you have gathered on mostly anything that gives internet access.
  • There'll be advanced game stats which'll show how you did with your detective abilities and to compare against your friends.
  • For achievements there'll be a few tips for the hard ones. It'll also show how many achievements you and your friends have completed.

So if you don't have a Rockstar Social Club account, you should create one to get these special benefits. Remember it's free!

L.A. Noire's Map:

Wonder what happens if you go outside the game's boundary.
This map shows what you and your friend have found in the game.
Also seems like Newspapers will be collectibles. Maybe they'll include newspaper posts from crimes, such as the Black Dahlia.

@bioblood22: Well having not a lot of people on the streets is quite a good thing in this game because remember, you get penalized for illegal actions (running over pedestrians, commandeering too many cars, etc.). If you cause too much havoc, you'll have to restart from the last save.
