Okami - First Playthrough

Ok, so I recently got Okami (PS2 version) through a trade so that I can finally cross it off of my gaming bucket list.

My first impressions were amazing. For one, the graphics and gameplay hold up really well, but what really surprised me was how much of a Zelda game it is. When I started out you could not tear me away from the screen. I think I blew through the first 14 hours of the game over a weekend.

I love the simplicity of the Celestial Brush. Instead of having to collect a bunch of items and constantly switch between them throughout the course of the game, they roll all your abilities onto this one button and twirl of the analog stick. I'm also digging the Capcom in-jokes (how is there not a Raging Demon page on the site??).

Unfortunately though, my gushing love for this game has subsided, but only a bit. The thing that deflated me was the fake climax. When the game starts, you're told about this hundred year old legend of the defeat of a monster. The game constantly references this and felt like it was leading up to you fulfilling / recreating this task. Once the game made it obvious that this was about to happen, I was a bit surprised as I had not unlocked the majority of the brush techniques and there was a bunch of stuff missing in the various log books, but the story made it feel like it was time to do this. So I went through the "final" dungeon(s), felled the beast of legend, and the game kept going.

I would assume the feeling is akin to what SotN players felt when they discovered there was a whole 'nother castle to explore to truly beat the game.

I'm still making my way through the game, but now it feels more like a grind. I'm sure this is mostly my fault and perhaps a sign of the times. I was expecting a 20 hour game, which was about the mark I hit when I reached the first climax, and was a bit intimidated when I realized that I had barely scratched the surface.

Thinking about it now I'm in awe at how much they've been able to cram into this game.

Apologies for my disjointed thoughts, but I'm really just curious if anyone feels the same.

Also, I'm still making my way through the game so NO SPOILERS please.

I feel exactly the same. If Okami lasted 20 hours, It probably would've been one of favourite games of all time. Everything was in place; the visuals, the music, the story, the gameplay. Perhaps it was because I had other games I wanted to start, but by the end it did become a chore.

However, I liked the busty babes jokes.

Man, I thought I had reached the end at like three or four points in the game, only to be greeted by yet another story arc.

Okami isn't a game. It's an entire fucking series.

@odintal: Yeah, that was the main reason I went with the PS2 version. Did not want to deal with that Wiimote BS

I bought the game for the Wii, but could never get into it. The controls worked fine, but I found myself bored while running around trying to figure things out and just gave up. When I have to go to gamefaqs every other minute, that means the game is too much for me. Same for Braid on my Xbox 360. Such praise, but not the game for me.

I gave up on the wii version when it refused to acknowledge me drawing a circle, a straight line, or just moving the wiimote in general.

I should pick up the PS2 version used sometime.

@WickedFather: The "busty babe" and "stacked" comments actually started to grate on me. I guess for me the Japanese misogyny is getting old, and they took it a bit further than I was used to. Other than that, yeah, Issun is awesome comic relief.

@ChristianCastillo: Did you do a lot of the side stuff on your playthrough? I'm more on the "completionist" side of the scale and wanted to gauge about how far I have to go.

I'm definitely determined to finish the game but wow, that was one helluva buzzkill

I had the same feelings running up to the percieved ending, but was pretty excited as it continued on. It definately picks back up the pace especially at the end.

The only negative thing I can say about this game is that at some point its reached a logical conclusion yet kept going and going. But everything that came afterward was still really good so not problemo.

Well, I recently finished the WII version (ended up playing 51 hours) and I have to say it gets better around the end of the game.  You might already know how easy the bosses are at the beginning of the game but around the end there are some tough ones which actually provide some action. There was alot to do in the game, alot of things to collect and alot of celestial techninques to get which you can actually go through the game without ever getting.  There are some really cool weapons which you can pair up to create a something awesome.  I think the story gets way better by the middle to end of the game, around the 30th hour.  You still have ways to go!
